Imperial Carriage Museum Vienna

The Imperial Carriage Museum Vienna near Schönbrunn Palace invites you to take a walk through the history of Austria. See the carriages of famous rulers such as Maria Theresia, Napoleon or Franz Joseph and accompany them through their eventful lives. The highlight is the baroque Imperial Coach, but there are also exquisite state carriages, comfortable travelling coaches and the charming children’s carriages of Habsburg princes and princesses. The Sisi Trail in the Carriage MuseumFollow the life of Empress Elisabeth from her marriage to her tragic death Since 2008 visitors can enjoy the Sisi Trail laid out in the main gallery of the Carriage Museum, and follow the life of Empress Elisabeth from her wedding to her tragic death illustrated by her carriages and unique original mementos. On show are, for example, the coach she rode in as an imperial bride, the charming carriages of her children, the golden Imperial Coach she used at her coronation as queen of Hungary, the carriage she alighted from just minutes before her assassination in Geneva, and the impressive black hearse that bore her to her final resting place. These carriages are displayed together with portraits, paintings and unique objects that once belonged to Sisi: the sumptuous black robe with endless train, designed for the empress by Fanny Scheiner c. 1885, has iconic status among Sisi-fans; it documents the slender figure of this famous beauty celebrated for her tiny waist. On show are also the only extant saddle used by the empress (regarded as the best horsewoman of her time) and her reconstructed “riding chapel” comprising portraits of her favorite horses.

A very pleasant small museum, which is what it says on the tin - perhaps fifty early horse drawn carriages plus related ephemera very well explained and presented - a credit to the palace and to the Habsburg Empire that it celebrates.

Not the huge crowd of the palace or garden, photos were allowed, and staff was great. It was worth the few extra steps from the palace to see the carriages and mystery dress.

Something to see. Does a very good job showing the history of carriage use and the extensive use of carriages in all seasons. Some very ornate. Spend at least an hour when you are visiting Schonbrunn Palace.

Visited Schonbrunn with my college aged son. We loved the Carriage museum!! So interesting to see the carriages for all different types of royalty and the improvements made over time. We also like the Struedel show and touring the palace and zoo.

We actually missed visiting the carriage museum the first day so returned the second and we were glad we did. Shuts at 4 during the winter months. The carriages are immaculate and from a variety of periods of the royal families lifetimes with a variety of uses from celebratory to funeral and processions. There are a couple of additional pieces including dressage attire and clothing of the actual family members too. Free with the Vienna pass

This museum is located on the grounds of Schönbrunn palace but requires an extra entrance fee. If you have a Vienna Pass the tour is included on the pass. This is a lovely exhibit of royal carriages and garments. Photos (without flash) are allowed.

The Imperial Carriages Museum was the biggest surprise of all the attractions I visited in Vienna. I was expecting some average, old dusty Habsburg carriages from the 19th century, and instead I discovered some of the most opulent carriages I have ever seen. It was especially impressive to me as I live in London and am familiar with the British monarchy's Gold State Coach and the Lord Mayor's Coach. The Imperial Coronation Carriage on display from the 1730s is both older and more delicately beautiful than anything seen in Britain, plus the mourning carriages--used during official funerals--are unique survivals from dark court rituals long gone. There was even a golden snow sleigh from the 1740s used by Empress Maria Theresa. In fact, from the early 18th century to the early 20th century the number and variety of coaches on display was incredible. The museum owns over 100 court vehicles, of which over 30 are on display. It is a paradise for royal history buffs. Of interest, like many Vienna attractions the museum also carries items belonging to Empress Sisi, including her wedding train and one black dress showing her impossibly thin waist. An interesting video presentation (with English subtitles) recounts her groundbreaking, yet tragic life, drawing comparisons with Princess Diana's troubles. The Museum is in the grounds of Schonbrunn just a few minutes' walk from the palace, but it has a separate entry ticket which is included in the Vienna Pass. The helpful audio guide is extra. I recommend leaving 1-2 hrs to see the museum after you have seen the palace, and to START THE VISIT FROM THE BACK OF THE HALL, where the most spectacular carriages are. Don't do like I did: I got so engrossed with the 'average' carriages in the front hall and the Sisi videos that I didn't realize the most spectacular coaches were in the back, and by the time I got there I only had 20 minutes before the place closed! The souvenir book is also one of the best I bought in Vienna.

I didn't expect to learn as much as I did about the Emperor and Empress (Franz Josef and Elizabeth (Sissi))! The carriages themselves are beautiful to look at, and very well displayed, but the video exhibit is incredible. We wandered in here on our last day in Vienna, thinking we'd spend maybe 30 minutes out of the drizzle, but we were inside for almost two hours, watching all the videos. I highly recommend this exhibit!

Really enjoyable museum, worth going to visit. You only need an hour to an hour and a half. You do have to pay extra to see it even if you have the Classic plus pass but i would still do this as it was really interesting and you learn alot about the royals here. Loved the carriages, so beautiful!!

Upon entering Schoenbrunn Palace gates we turned right and to see the carriages as last time I was there it was closed. With the Vienna Card access is really quick, otherwise its about E10 entry and there is a little shop there too. It is worth visiting - I loved it. You cannot miss it as it has a massive carriage display hanging infront. [see photo]. There are 3 rooms, 2 on the ground level and one up the stairs. 1. The first room has the older carriages to new developments - the history, even linked to F1 racing, plus videos in German [English subtitles] about Sisi, the Kaiser etc, really interesting. There are clothes Sisi etc wore and info why they were worn that way. You think these carriages are awesome, just wait until you enter the next room - the funeral carriage was so cool. 2. Upon entering the second room, I was blown away more so. These carriages were the top of the range, bells and whistles and glorious ones. They are preserved so beautifully. 3. Upstairs are paintings of their horses and other things. *If you get too close to the carriages alarms go off. *Staff are also knowledgeable. *It is a quiet area, soft voices *Placards are in English and German *Spend time looking at the carriages from all angles as the carvings etc are just exquisite *Photos are allowed without flash
