About Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year differs from the global New Year of 31st December, instead is held often called the Spring Festival and heralds the end of the coldest days and the coming of spring. In some countries such as South Korea and Vietnam it is called the lunar New Year. Unlike many occasions there is no set date and can fall between January 21st and February 20th.

The Chinese zodiac is a based on the lunar calendar and assigns an animal and its reputed attributes to each year in a repeating 12-year cycle. The animals of the Chinese zodiac are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

The Chinese New Year is traditionally a time of praying to gods and honouring ancestors, it is now a time for family and friends to get together to celebrate and dine together.

Food is a vital part of the Chinese New Year celebrations, and some foods have meaning such as dumplings and wealth, rice cakes and promotion. Many restaurants will provide seasonal menus, and if you are considering celebrating at home or at your workplace consider an external caterer who can deliver to your venue.

Many cities around the world have famous Chinatowns including San Francisco, New York, Melbourne, London, Bangkok, Manila, Singapore, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Paris. Many locations will be able to provide specific Chinatown tours, giving your group the opportunity to try some amazing cuisine, and potentially include the New Year Parade. Other activities may include creating decorations for Chinese New Year, especially lanterns which are a classic part of the traditional celebrations.

If you are planning an evening party, fireworks are an important part of Chinese New Year, but if you are considering hiring a professional fireworks display; book early as Chinese New Year is the biggest fireworks night in the world!
