Your Itinerary

Old Bazaar, Skopje

Our day tour to Skopje will start with pick up from your hotel/accommodation in Sofia at 08:00 am. After approximately 3 and a half hours guided trip we will reach Skopje. During the long drive, you will learn the Bulgarian point of view regarding the history of the region. Then you will have two hours guided tour of the city made by a local Macedonian guide. You will have the chance to hear the stories about Yugoslavia and the modern way of life in the country from a native, which will make your experience much more fulfilled. In addition, you will compare the two historical interpretations and make your own conclusions. The highlights you will visit are the Old fortress, Sultan Murat Mosques and the Old Bazaar, where we will have the chance to see Caravanserais (inns) from the Ottoman period when Skopje was one of the main trade centers on the Balkans.

Skopje Fortress Kale

Historical fortress located at the highest point in Skopje from where you will have the chance to admire the stunning view of the city.

Sultan Murad Mosque

(Pass by)

A mosque from the Ottoman-era, built during the 15th century. It is a masterpiece of the architectural achievements of the early Ottoman empire.

The Stone Bridge

We will cross the Vardar River by the Stone bridge, the only preserved bridge from the Middle ages and start our exploration of the new part of the city.

Macedonia Square

We will visit the new neo-classical square Macedonia. There we will admire the biggest statue of Alexander the Great and his father Phillip II. You will stop and learn the history of the ancient Macedonians and the adventures of their rulers.

Memorial House of Mother Teresa

We will continue to Mother Teresa memorial house. She is the most famous person born in Skopje. Her work and contribution to the world deserve huge respect. In the house museum, you will learn about her story and will track her life by the big photography collection. The walking part of the tour will finish at the Gate Macedonia (newly built triumphal arch).

Matka Canyon

Unfortunately, the itinerary will not allow you to have free time for lunch in Skopje. It is good to take some fast food during the walking tour or bring some sandwiches with you. You can buy it from a petrol station before arriving in the city. After the walking tour, your local guide will drive you to Matka Canyon where you will have approximately an hour and a half to admire the beauty of nature. You will have a boat trip inside the canyon you will pass by probably the deepest underwater cave in the world. After that at 16:00, you will meet with the rest of the group and depart back to Sofia. During driving, you will be able to discuss your impressions and ask your questions.

I'm sure this is a great experience but unfortunately I didn't get to experience the trip at all and they moved me to do to a different experience due to numbers.

Actually I t was a private tour because only me went to Matka. I'm so happy I booked that one. Daniel a wonderful tour guide and driver. We spent the whole day together so We had very deep conversation about everything He is a so funny person as well. Mike from Skopje also is an amazing guy. He very knowledgeable. He was so kind with me:He bought a magnet for me because I don't use cash. I can't recommend enough this tour!

Our tour guide was a local, very knowledgeable about his country's history, we had a blast a the Matka Canyon it is such a beautiful place well worth the visit!

Aubrey_C

Best part of the trip we’re the guides! Lubo is a well educated, well read young man whose conversation kept me interested throughout the journey to and from Sofia. And Mike in Skopje who was very friendly and interesting during our walk through the city. One criticism: the tour is not as described. We had more free time than planned in Skopje. Not a problem but the visit to matka canyon did not happen. Please change the tour description!

This is an excellent itinerary. There are lot of things to see in Skopje. The boat trip towards the Matka Canyon and the visit to the cave is worth.

Devaky_D

It was a small group of 5 people with Lyubo our guide. A very knowledgeable guide and kept us interested in the history and stories. 1 day is definitely not enough to enjoy the nature at Matya Canyon but good enough for a get to know the place with boat cruise. The city walking tour was just enough. Long day but interesting.

Great opportunity to see North Macedonia's main sites from Sofia. Match Canyon stunning and Skopje really interesting. Guide was a bit anti-North Macedonia but was very willing to share information or discuss items on any topic

This tour to Skopje in North Macedonia is a great opportunity to get to know one more country for the list when in Sofia, Bulgaria. Our group was small and Vasco was our driver and guide for the Bulgarian part of the trip, and he is one of the best guides I ever had in my life, being an extremely nice and intelligent person, telling us really interesting facts, being excellent company for the route and turning the experience into VIP. Vasco also managed to solve some unforeseen events along the way very efficiently, really an exceptional guy. Once in Skopje, our group was guided through the main sights of the city by a local guide who was very knowledgeable about the history and customs of North Macedonia from the point of view of a citizen of the country itself. Finally, we visit the beautiful Matka Canyon in a boat ride inside it, with its unmissable breathtaking scenery, in a experience to by remembered for all my life. I strongly recommend this tour, the company BulTrips and the very professional guide Vasco.
