Be under no illusions, this is NOT a real castle! Grumpy welcome at the ticket when my ticket didn't say what he wanted it to. Then greeted by the king who insisted we had our photo taken with him. The grounds are very pretty and well kept. It's a poor man's Harry Potter World. Fake armour and wishing wells. The kids we saw seemed to enjoy it. If you're thinking of coming, do not buy an excursion ticket, it's not worth the money. Done and dusted in an hour. The zoo........miss it out. If you like animals it will upset you. Kept in makeshift wire cages in filthy conditions. With the heat the smell was quite pungent. Birds were clearly distressed as they were pulling out their feathers. Food and drinks are extremely expensive. We paid £16 each entry. Not worth the money and they charge extra to go into the castle. NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL

We loved this place as soon as we stepped inside. Beautiful gardens, lovely animals (seemed to be in good condition despite the bad reviews) impressive buildings and it was generally nice to walk around. The staff were friendly and made us feel welcome. That was all until we decided to stop for “kebab” type food at the stall at the back. We ordered 6 meals, he gave us 5 and refused to give us the 6th meal claiming he had already given it to us. We gave him our receipt but he still refused. We tried being friendly and reasonable but he was incredibly rude back. Even claimed that he would “check his security camera” then admitted that he didn’t have a camera. Nasty individual who ruined the rest of the experience for us. Thankfully this was at the end of our trip so we were happy to leave after this. The guy needs to go back to school and learn how to count to 6.

Worth visiting, it’s really astonishing inside. Has many gardens you can access some of the buildings, I love the lake and the walk inside the gardens.

Terrible. Inhumane treatment and care of animals. Hugely overpriced entrance fee for nothing once inside. The whole place is geared to squeeze every last penny from the tourism industry, including the fee to use the toilets. Do not be fooled into giving this tourist trap a single Lev of your cash.

It's a very good and beautiful place. But the entrance to the castle is closed. Only on the territory you may walk

I’d read the reviews on here, so was expecting some sort of enjoyable, weird, post-apocalyptic nightmare tourist trap. Actually it turned out to certainly be weird, but was a great way to spend a big chunk of the day. It cost a reasonable 15lev to get a taxi from sozipol (hang on to the driver’s phone number as there is no taxi stand on the way out) and 30 lev to get in each. Immediately you get your photo taken with a knight - with the option to buy the photo at the end - and there a gallery nearby which costs 10lev to get in. So you can see why people think it’s a bit of a tourist trap. But actually, there was no trouble on the way out if you didn’t buy the photo and fridge magnet (we did for 10 lev for the photo, but others didn’t) and the cafes weren’t unreasonably priced at all. The toilet does cost 1 lev, but at 40p it wasn’t a major cost. The parrot cage at the door was ominously empty for anyone worrying about it after last year’s reviews. It was probably on holiday having a nice long drink… The place itself is weird and wonderful - beautiful in many ways. Slightly faded in places, the sheer scale of the castle and the large grounds is impressive. Part Disney, park 80’s rock album cover, it’s a strange mix of styles that keeps you interested and looking for what you’ve missed as you walk around. We went round a couple of times, which was worth doing. The “zoo” is a tad limited and the gift shop is insane (anyone for a cutlery set?) but the suits of armour, the beautiful gardens, the little birds, the chapel, the underground rooms, the fish pond, the grass elephants and the view from the builders rooms are great. Well worth a visit. The cafe nearer the entrance was the best one we found - they give you glass goblets to drink from, which was a nice touch - and the free to use helmet and morning star was a definite highlight. Worth 3 hours of anyone’s time I reckon.

Beautiful castle .. we really enjoyed walking around this building. We incorporated this visit along with a boat trip and a guided tour around Sozopol.

It was way too expensive, you have to buy an entrance ticket which is 25 leva, then in order to see the castle inside you have to pay, youbalsonhave ro pay to see everything else inside... So you pay entrance ticket which doesn't cover anything... 25 leva just to see a garden..It's not worth it. If you have a family it's just too much money. Better to go to a museum or something where the entrance fee is for everything..my parents had to pay a lot of money just for nothing... Just to see a garden. That entrance price should cover everything inside the castle. I shouldn't pay more to see a gallery or the castle rooms.

Amazing grounds, amazing castle so much to do within the grounds, beautiful religious area. Love being welcomed by the King, the owner has a terrarium with one of the most deadly snakes, I did not visit that, the owner lives on the property and is known to be seen walking around saying hi to visitors. I would highly recommend visiting, we did it as part of a tour.
