Echoes of the Past

Today was a day of diving deep into the cultural heart of Harar. With Hans-Peter and Lila by my side, I felt an overwhelming sense of connection to this city, my birthplace. Sharing its stories with my family made the experience even more profound. It's like showing them a part of myself they hadn't fully seen before.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hirut Restaurant. The aroma of freshly baked bread and the spicy kick of the local *fit-fit* filled the air. Lila, ever the adventurous eater, surprised us by trying a bit of everything. Hans-Peter, on the other hand, stuck to his usual coffee, but even he admitted that it tasted better here than back in Munich. It's funny how a change of scenery can make even the simplest things feel extraordinary.

Fuelled up, we set off to Rimbaud's House & Museum. The house itself is a beautiful example of traditional Harari architecture, with its intricately carved wooden doors and colorful walls. Stepping inside felt like stepping back in time. I tried to imagine the young poet, Arthur Rimbaud, wandering these very rooms, his mind ablaze with words and ideas. It's incredible to think that this small city once served as a muse for such a literary giant. Lila, surprisingly, was captivated by the old photographs and letters on display. She peppered me with questions about Rimbaud's life, his travels, and his poetry. It was a wonderful opportunity to introduce her to a different kind of history, one that's shaped by art and imagination.

History is not just about dates and facts; it's about the stories that shape us, the art that inspires us, and the connections that bind us together.

Next on our list was the Sherif Private Museum. This place is a true hidden gem. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the city, it's a treasure trove of artifacts collected by a local Harari family over generations. From ancient manuscripts to traditional clothing, every object tells a story about Harar's rich cultural heritage. The curator, a kind and knowledgeable woman, greeted us with a warm smile and shared fascinating anecdotes about each item. Lila was particularly fascinated by the collection of old coins, each one a tiny window into the past. Hans-Peter, ever the pragmatist, was impressed by the museum's dedication to preserving local traditions. He even struck up a conversation with the curator about the challenges of running a private museum in a city like Harar. It's moments like these that remind me how much I appreciate his curiosity and his willingness to engage with different cultures.

For lunch, we ventured to AWADAYE RESTAURANT(ABDI YONIS), a local favorite known for its authentic Harari cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with the sounds of laughter and lively conversation. We ordered a variety of dishes to share, including *khat* stew and *maraq*, a flavorful meat soup. Lila, always eager to try new things, declared the *maraq* her favorite. Hans-Peter, who's not always the most adventurous eater, even enjoyed the *khat* stew, though he admitted that it was a bit spicier than he's used to. As we ate, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride in my cultural heritage. Sharing these traditional dishes with my family was a way of sharing a part of myself.

In the late afternoon, we decided to take a break from sightseeing and unwind at Desta Bar & Restaurant. I know it sounds strange to go to a bar with a 10-year-old, but Desta is more than just a bar; it's a social hub where locals gather to relax, chat, and enjoy each other's company. We sat at a table on the terrace, sipping on refreshing fruit juices and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Lila, surprisingly, was quite content to people-watch, pointing out interesting characters and making up stories about their lives. Hans-Peter and I enjoyed a rare moment of quiet, watching our daughter embrace the energy of the city.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Harar Brewery Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant is located on the outskirts of the city, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. We sat at a table overlooking the valley, watching as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The restaurant is known for its grilled meats, so we ordered a platter of kebabs and chicken, accompanied by injera and a variety of sauces. Lila, who's a big fan of grilled chicken, devoured her portion in minutes. Hans-Peter and I savored each bite, enjoying the delicious food and the breathtaking scenery.

Today was a whirlwind of cultural immersion, culinary delights, and family bonding. I feel so grateful to have had the opportunity to share my birthplace with my husband and daughter. Seeing Harar through their eyes has given me a renewed appreciation for its beauty, its history, and its vibrant spirit.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Hyena Feeding Site and the Ras Makonnen Statue. I'm particularly excited about the hyena feeding, as it's a truly unique and unforgettable experience. I’ve heard so much about it, and I can't wait to witness it firsthand. I think Lila will find it fascinating, though I suspect Hans-Peter might be a bit apprehensive. We’ll also stop by AYA BOUTIQUE AND COLLECTION to get some souvenirs before we continue our journey. I am sure that the next days will be as exciting as today was.

As I reflect on our second day in Harar, I'm filled with a sense of contentment. This trip is more than just a vacation; it's a journey of self-discovery, a chance to reconnect with my roots, and an opportunity to create lasting memories with my family. And I couldn't be happier to share it all with you.
