Finding Peace and History in Harar
Today was a beautiful blend of serenity and cultural immersion in my beloved Harar. It felt wonderful to share the city's hidden gems with Hans-Peter and Lila, showing them a side of my heritage that I hold so dear. From peaceful gardens to bustling squares, Harar continues to surprise and enchant us.
Our day started with a delightful breakfast at All Day. While the name might not be the most imaginative, the food was hearty and gave us the perfect energy boost for the day ahead. Lila was particularly fond of the *firfir*, a spicy stew made from shredded *injera*, and even Hans-Peter, who usually prefers his Bavarian *weisswurst*, admitted it was a great way to start the morning. It’s moments like these, sharing Ethiopian cuisine with my family, that truly make this heritage journey special. It reminds me of my childhood, of waking up to the aromas of my mother's cooking and the anticipation of another day in this magical city.
After breakfast, we ventured to Chehar goga tham jegol, a garden that offered a tranquil escape from the city's vibrant energy. As we stepped through the entrance, we were greeted by a mosaic of lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and peaceful pathways. It was a welcome contrast to the bustling streets of Harar, a place where we could simply stroll and soak in the serene atmosphere. Lila, ever the curious explorer, was fascinated by the diverse array of plant species, many of which are native to Ethiopia. She peppered me with questions about each flower and tree, her eyes wide with wonder. Even Hans-Peter, who usually prefers the structured gardens of Munich, was captivated by the garden's natural beauty.

The garden's design beautifully reflected the rich cultural heritage of the region. As we wandered through the tranquil pathways, I felt a deep connection to my roots. It was as if I were walking through the memories of my childhood, surrounded by the same sights and sounds that had shaped me into the woman I am today. The gentle rustle of leaves and the soft hum of bees created a peaceful ambiance, encouraging relaxation and reflection. It was the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and reconnect with nature.
The beauty of Harar lies not only in its historical landmarks but also in the quiet corners where one can find peace and connection.
Leaving the tranquility of the garden, we headed to Amir Talha Square, a bustling hub of local life. The square was alive with activity, vendors selling everything from colorful textiles to fragrant spices. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter, chatter, and the rhythmic beats of traditional music. Lila was immediately drawn to the vibrant scene, her eyes darting from one fascinating sight to another. She was particularly intrigued by the women selling *khat*, a local stimulant, and peppered me with questions about its use and cultural significance.

As we navigated through the crowds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride in my city. Amir Talha Square is more than just a marketplace; it's a place where people come together to socialize, share stories, and celebrate their culture. It's a microcosm of Harar itself, a melting pot of traditions, languages, and ethnicities. Hans-Peter, always the keen observer, was fascinated by the energy of the square. He marveled at the intricate patterns of the textiles and the vibrant colors of the spices, capturing the scene with his camera.
For lunch, we chose Timir Resturant, a local favorite known for its authentic Harari cuisine. We sat at a table overlooking the square, soaking in the lively atmosphere as we waited for our food. I ordered *shiro*, a thick stew made from ground chickpeas, while Hans-Peter opted for *tibs*, sautéed meat with vegetables. Lila, always adventurous, decided to try *ful*, a dish made from mashed fava beans, a popular breakfast and street food in Ethiopia. The food was delicious, each dish bursting with flavor and spice. It was a true culinary journey, a taste of the real Harar.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, we sought refuge at Kare awud bar & restaurant. After a day filled with exploration and cultural immersion, it was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on our experiences. The bar had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with traditional Ethiopian decor and a friendly staff. We ordered some local beers and settled into a comfortable corner, ready to savor the moment. The funny thing is, Lila insisted on trying a local soda, and she loved it. She said it tasted like sunshine and happiness, which made us all laugh.

As we sipped our drinks, we reminisced about the day's adventures. We talked about the tranquility of Chehar goga tham jegol, the vibrancy of Amir Talha Square, and the deliciousness of the food at Timir Resturant. It was a day filled with new experiences and cherished memories, a day that brought us closer to each other and to my Ethiopian heritage. It was a reminder of why I wanted to share this journey with my family, to show them the beauty and richness of my birthplace.
For dinner, we decided to try GENET KITFO, a restaurant specializing in *kitfo*, a traditional Ethiopian dish made from minced raw beef marinated in spices and butter. It’s a dish I remember fondly from my childhood, and I was eager to share it with Hans-Peter and Lila. While the idea of eating raw beef might sound daunting to some, the *kitfo* at GENET KITFO was incredibly flavorful and tender. Even Lila, who can be a picky eater, enjoyed it. It was a fitting end to a day filled with culinary delights.

As we walked back to my family's house, the city was bathed in the warm glow of the streetlights. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter and music, the pulse of Harar's vibrant nightlife. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this day, for the opportunity to share my heritage with my family and to reconnect with my roots. It was a day that will forever be etched in my memory, a reminder of the beauty and magic of Harar.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Warka and Haroo Haramayaa. I'm excited to show Lila the natural beauty outside the city walls and share more stories of my childhood. I am particularly excited about visiting Haroo Haramayaa, a place that holds a special significance in my heart, as it was a favorite spot for family picnics when I was growing up. It will be a journey down memory lane, a chance to relive those cherished moments and create new ones with my husband and daughter. I can't wait to see their faces light up as they experience the breathtaking views and the fresh mountain air. It will be another day of discovery, another day of connection, another day of creating lasting memories in my beloved Harar.
Harar is more than just a city; it's a feeling, a connection to the past, and a celebration of the present. I hope to convey this feeling with my family, and I think I managed to do just that today.
