Day 7: A Step Back in Time: Exploring Takayama's Rich History and Culinary Delights
Discover Takayama's historical charm at Takayama Jinya and vibrant morning markets, indulging in local Hida cuisine and cultural experiences.
Echoes of Edo in Takayama
Today, Takayama Jinya transported us back in time. From the meticulously preserved Takayama Jinya to the bustling Jinya-mae Morning Markets, every corner of this city whispered stories of a bygone era. It was a day filled with cultural immersion, delightful culinary experiences, and a deeper appreciation for Japan's rich heritage.
Step back in time at Japan's only remaining Edo-era government building, where feudal history comes to life in the heart of Takayama.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Nomura. I opted for a traditional Japanese set, while Klaus enjoyed a western-style toast with coffee. Ama, of course, was happy with her usual – a small bowl of rice with some fruit. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the historic heart of Takayama, starting with the Takayama Jinya.
Takayama Jinya is the only remaining main building of a former shogunate magistrate's office. As we approached the entrance, the imposing gate stood as a sentinel, guarding the secrets within. The crisp morning air hinted at the cool October weather, a perfect setting for exploring the historical site. The surrounding trees were just beginning to display the early tinges of autumn, adding a touch of seasonal beauty to the scene. I was grateful I packed layers for Ama; the weather can be unpredictable this time of year.
Stepping inside Takayama Jinya felt like stepping back into the Edo period. The meticulously maintained tatami rooms, once offices and conference spaces, now echoed with the footsteps of curious visitors. Klaus, ever the architect, was fascinated by the traditional construction techniques and the clever use of space. Ama, surprisingly, was captivated by the large hall, running around and giggling, unaware of the history beneath her tiny feet.
We explored the residential space, imagining the lives of the magistrates and their families who once called this place home. The stark contrast between the bright, airy rooms facing the courtyard and the somber interrogation room left a lasting impression. I couldn't help but feel a shiver as I stood in the courtroom, picturing the harsh interrogations that took place within those walls.
History is not just a collection of dates and names; it's a living, breathing narrative that shapes our present and guides our future.
After immersing ourselves in the history of Takayama Jinya, we ventured out to the Jinya-mae Morning Markets. The markets were a vibrant explosion of colors, sounds, and smells. Local farmers proudly displayed their fresh produce, pickles, spices, and handcrafted goods. The energy was infectious, and I found myself drawn into conversations with the vendors, learning about their traditions and way of life.

I picked up some locally grown apples and pears, their sweet fragrance filling the air. Klaus, always on the lookout for unique souvenirs, found a beautifully carved wooden doll for Ama. Ama, of course, was most excited about the colorful candies and small toys on display. We also sampled some *gohei mochi*, a local specialty of pounded rice cakes covered in a sweet and savory miso glaze. The warm, chewy treat was the perfect snack to fuel our exploration.
For lunch, we headed to Hiiragi, a restaurant recommended for its regional cuisine. We enjoyed Hida beef skewers, grilled river fish, and mountain vegetables. The Hida beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, a testament to the region's culinary expertise. Ama surprised us by devouring a whole skewer of Hida beef, a clear indication of her growing appreciation for Japanese cuisine. Klaus and I shared a bottle of local sake, its smooth, delicate flavor complementing the meal perfectly.

In the late afternoon, while Ama napped in her stroller, Klaus and I decided to take a stroll through the old town, Sanmachi Suji. The beautifully preserved wooden merchant houses, dating back to the Edo period, lined the narrow streets, creating a picturesque scene. We peeked into small museums, craft shops, and sake breweries, each offering a glimpse into Takayama's rich cultural heritage.
As evening approached, we sought out Gassho, a local bar known for its cozy atmosphere. We sampled some local craft beers and chatted with the friendly owner, learning about the history of the bar and its connection to the community. It was a relaxing way to end a busy day, soaking in the local ambiance and enjoying the company of good people.

The best journey always takes us home, in a way.
For dinner, we opted for Hidaji, a restaurant specializing in Hida cuisine. The restaurant was nestled in a quiet corner of the city, exuding an air of understated elegance. We chose a traditional multi-course meal featuring Hida beef prepared in various styles, from succulent grilled steaks to delicate simmered dishes. The presentation was exquisite, each dish a work of art, and the flavors were simply divine.
