Immerse yourself in Chiang Mai's cultural heart, exploring ancient temples, vibrant art, and savoring authentic northern Thai cuisine.
A Day of Temples, Art, and Culinary Delights
Today marked the beginning of our family's Chiang Mai adventure, and what a start it was! Leaving behind the chilly January air of Potsdam, we embraced the warmth and vibrant culture of northern Thailand. While Klaus and Ama are still adjusting to the time difference, I couldn't wait to dive into the heart of this captivating city.
Our first stop was the majestic Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a temple perched high on a mountain overlooking Chiang Mai. The drive up was an experience in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the city below. The air grew cooler as we ascended, a welcome change from the city's warmth. At the summit, the temple complex glittered in the sunlight, a breathtaking sight that left me speechless.

Legend has it that the temple's location was chosen by a white elephant carrying a sacred relic, a story that adds to the mystique of this holy place. The intricate architecture, the serene atmosphere, and the panoramic views combined to create a truly unforgettable experience. Even Ama, usually restless, seemed captivated by the golden chedi and the chanting of the monks. We lit incense and offered lotus flowers, a small gesture of respect for the local traditions. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace wash over me, a feeling I haven't experienced so intensely since visiting the sacred groves in Kintampo.
Regardless of how you feel about temples, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a must-visit in Chiang Mai. It’s a striking temple, which oddly enough, I found calming and soothing in spite of the mass of tourists.
After descending from Doi Suthep, we ventured into the heart of Chiang Mai's Old City, our next destination being Wat Phra Singh Woramahawihan. This temple, dating back to the 14th century, is a beautiful example of Lanna architecture. It houses the revered Phra Buddha Sihing statue, a symbol of the city's spiritual heritage. The intricate carvings and gilded details of the temple buildings were truly awe-inspiring. I found myself drawn to the peaceful atmosphere of the temple grounds, a sanctuary amidst the bustling city. Klaus, with his architect's eye, was particularly impressed by the temple's design and the way it blended seamlessly with the surrounding environment.

Next on our itinerary was the Chiang Mai City Arts & Cultural Centre. Housed in a beautifully restored building, the center offered a fascinating glimpse into the history and culture of Chiang Mai. The exhibits showcased the city's origins, its art, and its traditions, providing a comprehensive overview of its rich heritage. I was particularly intrigued by the displays on Lanna culture, which resonated with my own interest in African history and traditions. Ama enjoyed the interactive exhibits, especially the ones featuring traditional Thai music and dance.

For breakfast, we enjoyed a delightful meal at GINGER FARM kitchen at ONENIMMAN Chiangmai. The restaurant's focus on organic ingredients and traditional northern Thai cuisine was a perfect way to start our day. I savored the flavors of Khao Soi, a creamy coconut curry noodle soup, while Klaus opted for a more familiar Western-style breakfast. Ama, of course, devoured her pancakes with gusto. The ambiance of the restaurant, with its rustic décor and vibrant atmosphere, added to the overall experience.

Lunch took us to Kiti Panit, a restaurant known for its authentic Lanna cuisine. The setting was charming, a traditional Thai house with intricate wooden carvings and lush gardens. We sampled a variety of dishes, including grilled chicken, mango sticky rice, and a flavorful curry. While some reviews mention mixed experiences, we found the food to be delicious and the service attentive. It was a great opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local culinary scene and discover new flavors. I especially enjoyed the nam prik noom, a spicy eggplant relish that reminded me of the flavorful sauces of Ghana. Klaus appreciated the sai oua, a northern-style sausage with a unique blend of herbs and spices.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to The Riverside Bar & Restaurant for dinner. Situated on the banks of the Ping River, the restaurant offered stunning views and a lively atmosphere. We enjoyed a mix of Thai and international dishes, accompanied by refreshing cocktails. The live music added to the ambiance, creating a festive and enjoyable evening. Ama, surprisingly, stayed awake well past her bedtime, captivated by the music and the vibrant atmosphere. It was a perfect way to end our first day in Chiang Mai, a celebration of culture, cuisine, and family.

Before heading back to the hotel, I couldn't resist a quick stop at Rojana Art & Souvenirs. I wanted to find a special memento of our first day in Chiang Mai. The shop was a treasure trove of local crafts, from intricately woven textiles to hand-carved wooden sculptures. I finally settled on a beautiful silk scarf, its vibrant colors reminiscent of the temples and markets we had visited. I also picked up a small wooden elephant for Ama, a reminder of our adventure in Thailand. I also found some journals made from Sa paper.

Today was a whirlwind of temples, art, and culinary delights. Chiang Mai has already captured my heart with its rich culture, its warm people, and its stunning beauty. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings, as we plan to visit the Elephant Nature Park Office and Mae Kampong Village. I am particularly excited about the prospect of seeing elephants up close, an experience I know Ama will cherish. I am also looking forward to exploring Mae Kampong Village, a traditional Thai village known for its coffee plantations and its stunning natural scenery. It's a bit of a drive, but I've packed some travel games for Ama, hoping they will keep her entertained along the way. For dinner, we're planning to try Favola Chiang Mai, an Italian restaurant that has been highly recommended. It will be a nice change of pace from the Thai cuisine we've been enjoying, and I'm sure Ama will be thrilled to have some familiar food.
As I reflect on our first day, I am filled with gratitude for this opportunity to share my love of travel and culture with my family.
