A Day of Imperial Grandeur

Our final day in Morocco arrived with a mix of excitement and nostalgia. After nearly two weeks of immersing ourselves in the culture and beauty of this incredible country, it was time for one last adventure before heading back to Potsdam. Today, we explored the historic city of Meknes, soaking in the last moments of Moroccan charm and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

We started our day with a hearty breakfast at Grillade Albanna in Moulay Idriss. The traditional Moroccan pastries and strong coffee were the perfect fuel for our day of exploration. After breakfast, we packed our bags, said goodbye to our wonderful hosts, and set off for Meknes. The drive was short, and soon we were entering the gates of another of Morocco's imperial cities.

Meknes, often referred to as the “Versailles of Morocco,” is a city steeped in history and architectural grandeur. It served as the capital under Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, and his vision shaped much of what we see today. The city felt different from Fez; it was more laid-back, with a sense of authentic Moroccan life that wasn't overshadowed by tourism.

Our first stop was the Bab Mansour, perhaps the most famous and ornate gateway in all of Morocco. Its intricate details and imposing presence were truly breathtaking. Even though parts of the city were under construction, with some sites undergoing renovation, the beauty and historical significance of Bab Mansour shone through. Klaus, ever the architect, was particularly impressed by the gate's design and the sheer scale of the structure. He kept pointing out different architectural elements, explaining their historical context and significance. Ama, of course, was more interested in the pigeons fluttering around the square.

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”

We then ventured into the heart of the Medina, a labyrinth of narrow streets filled with shops, workshops, and the vibrant energy of daily life. Unlike the bustling souks of Fez, the Medina in Meknes felt more relaxed, allowing us to wander at our own pace and truly soak in the atmosphere. We explored the قيصرية مولاي ادريس, a shopping area where local artisans displayed their crafts. I was on the lookout for some last-minute souvenirs and gifts for friends back home. I found a beautiful handwoven rug with intricate Berber designs, perfect for our living room in Potsdam. Ama was delighted by a small, colorful tagine, which she immediately claimed as her own.

For lunch, we stopped at La Baraka, a charming restaurant in the heart of the Medina. We enjoyed a delicious tagine, savoring the rich flavors of Moroccan cuisine one last time. The tagine was cooked to perfection, the meat tender and flavorful, and the vegetables infused with aromatic spices. Klaus and I shared a pot of mint tea, while Ama enjoyed a refreshing glass of orange juice.

After lunch, we made our way to the Haroune Aqueduct, located a short drive from Meknes. This impressive structure, often mistaken for a Roman aqueduct, was actually built in the early 20th century to supply water to Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. As we approached the aqueduct, its double-tiered arches stood out against the rolling hills, a testament to the ingenuity of its builders.

We walked along the trails that crisscrossed the Oued Lkhammane river, passing under the arches of the aqueduct. Shepherds guided their livestock along the riverbanks, and farmers carried their produce on the backs of donkeys, creating a scene that felt timeless and authentic. Klaus was fascinated by the aqueduct's design, noting how it was modeled after ancient Roman aqueducts, showcasing the enduring effectiveness of this ancient technology.

As we stood there, admiring the Haroune Aqueduct, I couldn't help but reflect on our journey through Morocco. From the bustling streets of Marrakech to the serene beauty of the Sahara Desert, and the cultural richness of the Moulay Idriss Region, we had experienced so much in such a short time. Morocco had captured our hearts, and I knew we would carry its memories with us always.

Our final dinner in Morocco was at Al Andaloussiya Diyafa, a restaurant known for its traditional Moroccan ambiance and cuisine. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, with intricate mosaics, plush carpets, and ornate lanterns. We enjoyed a feast of Moroccan delicacies, including couscous, pastilla, and a variety of grilled meats. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect way to end our Moroccan adventure.

As we prepared to leave for the airport, I felt a pang of sadness. Our time in Morocco had come to an end, but the memories we made would last a lifetime. We had immersed ourselves in the local culture, explored ancient ruins, and forged connections with the people of this beautiful country. I knew that this was just the beginning of our exploration of the world, and I couldn't wait to see what adventures lay ahead.

Tomorrow, we fly back to Berlin, and then take the short trip back to Potsdam. It will be good to be home, but a part of me will always remain in Morocco.

Until our next adventure…
