Echoes of Empires and Faith

Today was a day of stepping back in time, a journey through the layers of Moroccan history. We traded the familiar hum of Potsdam for the silent stories etched in ancient stones and the vibrant pulse of a holy city. Morocco continues to surprise and enchant me, revealing new facets of its rich heritage at every turn.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk مقهى و مطعم عين زواوق. The strong coffee was exactly what Klaus and I needed to kickstart a day of exploration. Ama, of course, was more interested in the fresh orange juice, a sweet treat that fueled her boundless energy. After breakfast, we set off to explore the Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er.

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is a town draped in spirituality, clinging to the slopes of Mount Zerhoun. As we approached, the atmosphere shifted. The air felt thick with reverence, a palpable sense of history pressing in from all sides. The town itself is a visual marvel, a cascade of white buildings punctuated by the green-tiled roof of the mausoleum dedicated to Moulay Idriss I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty.

The narrow, winding streets of Moulay Idriss were a stark contrast to the wide boulevards of Potsdam. Here, the rhythm of life felt ancient, untouched by the relentless march of modernity. We climbed the steep pathways, passing shops overflowing with colorful textiles and fragrant spices. The call to prayer echoed from the minaret, a melodious reminder of the town's deep-rooted faith. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the mausoleum itself, just being in the vicinity was a powerful experience. I could feel the weight of history, the echoes of countless prayers offered over centuries.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

Leaving Moulay Idriss, we drove a short distance to Volubilis, an ancient Roman city that once thrived on these very lands.

The contrast between the two sites was striking. From the fervent devotion of Moulay Idriss to the stoic grandeur of Roman ruins, it felt like traversing centuries in a matter of minutes.

Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is an archaeologist's dream. As we walked through the sprawling complex, I imagined what life must have been like during its heyday. The Romans, with their penchant for order and grandeur, transformed this Berber settlement into a thriving metropolis. Olive groves and vineyards carpeted the surrounding hills, fueling the city's prosperity.

Ama was absolutely thrilled to be running around the Roman ruins of Volubilis. The columns and arches served as a great backdrop for her vivid imagination and story telling. Klaus, ever the architect, was fascinated by the intricate mosaics that adorned the floors of the ancient villas. I was particularly drawn to the Arch of Caracalla, a triumphal arch that stood as a testament to Roman power and ambition. The arch was erected in 217 AD to honor the Roman emperor Caracalla for granting Roman citizenship to the inhabitants of Volubilis.

Lunch at the restaurant Volubilis was a welcome respite from the sun. We savored traditional Moroccan tagines, the rich flavors a delightful reward after our explorations. Ama, surprisingly, devoured her portion of chicken tagine, a testament to her growing appreciation for Moroccan cuisine. We talked about the contrast between Moulay Idriss and Volubilis, marvelling at how different cultures and eras had left their indelible marks on this land.

As the afternoon waned, we made our way back to Moulay Idriss for dinner at La Baraka.

Perched on a hillside, the restaurant offered stunning views of the town and the surrounding countryside. The food was delicious, a flavorful blend of Moroccan spices and fresh ingredients. We shared stories and laughter, our family bond strengthened by the shared experiences of the day.

After dinner, Klaus and I decided to check out SCORPION HOUSE, while Ama stayed behind with our host family.

This bar is known for its unique atmosphere and panoramic views of Moulay Idriss. As we sipped on mint tea, we watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple. The town below twinkled with lights, a magical scene that encapsulated the beauty and serenity of Moulay Idriss. The bartender told us it was built in 1939. We chatted with some locals and other tourists, sharing travel stories and tips. It was a relaxing way to end a day filled with history and culture.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Bab Rmila Natural Park and Small Terasse, hopefully offering us more breathtaking views of the region. I'm also looking forward to visiting a local shop, زيارة باب مولاي إدريس, to pick up some souvenirs. It's hard to believe that our journey is already nearing its midpoint. Each day brings new adventures and discoveries, deepening my appreciation for Morocco and its people. I am excited to see what new experiences tomorrow will bring.

As I reflect on today, I am struck by the enduring power of faith and the impermanence of empires. Moulay Idriss, a beacon of Islamic spirituality, stands in stark contrast to the ruins of Volubilis, a testament to Roman ambition. Both sites, however, offer valuable insights into the human experience, reminding us of the ebb and flow of history, the rise and fall of civilizations. And as we continue our journey through Morocco, I am grateful for the opportunity to witness these echoes of the past, to learn from their stories, and to share them with you.

The weather was cooler today, with sunshine and a few clouds. It was perfect for exploring the outdoor sites without getting too hot. We made sure to apply sunscreen to protect ourselves from the sun's rays, especially since Ama's skin is so sensitive. I was thankful that I had packed a light jacket for the evenings, as it tends to get chilly once the sun goes down.

One of the highlights of the day was seeing the cylindrical minaret at the Sentissi Mosque in Moulay Idriss. It is said to be the only one of its kind in Morocco, covered in green tiles with white Kufic-style Arabic letters. It was a unique and beautiful sight that added to the town's charm.

I am also grateful for the kindness and hospitality of the local family we are staying with. They have welcomed us into their home and shared their culture with us, making our experience in Moulay Idriss even more special. Their warmth and generosity have touched my heart, reminding me of the importance of human connection and cultural exchange. It is experiences like these that make travel so rewarding and meaningful.

As we prepare for tomorrow's adventures, I am filled with anticipation and excitement. Morocco continues to captivate and inspire me, and I am eager to explore more of its hidden gems. Stay tuned for more tales from our family journey to the heart of Morocco!

We also learned that the annual Moussem of Moulay Idriss takes place in the late summer, attracting pilgrims from all over Morocco. It is a time of great celebration and religious fervor, with music, dancing, and other cultural events. While we won't be here for the Moussem, it was fascinating to learn about this important tradition and its significance to the people of Moulay Idriss.

The day was a beautiful blend of history, culture, and family bonding. Morocco continues to surprise and enchant me, and I am grateful for every moment of this incredible journey. Tomorrow, we will continue our exploration of this fascinating region, seeking out new adventures and creating lasting memories with my loved ones.
