Day 6: Accra's Green Escapes and Nightlife Delights: A Day of Exploration and Relaxation
Discover Accra's serene gardens, vibrant zoo, and lively nightlife, blending nature with urban excitement on my solo Ghanaian adventure.
A Day of Discoveries in Accra
Today was a blend of serene escapes and vibrant city life here in Accra. It was a day to explore the natural beauty within the city limits and then unwind with some local flavors and rhythms. I am always thrilled to find these pockets of peace amidst the hustle, and Accra certainly delivered. It's amazing how a city can hold so many different experiences, and I'm soaking it all in during this solo journey of reconnecting with my roots.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at MEET AND EAT. I decided to try their South Indian cuisine, opting for the masala dosa, and it was absolutely delicious. The spices were perfect, and it was a great way to fuel up for a day of exploring. Remembering my promise to Klaus and Ama to try new things, I made sure to note down the recipe in my travel journal; perhaps I can recreate it when I return to Potsdam. I am sure they'd love that!
First stop: Legon Botanical Gardens. This place is a true gem right in the heart of Accra. As someone who appreciates sustainable living, I was immediately drawn to the lush greenery and the peaceful atmosphere. The gardens are vast, offering a dynamic outdoor space for all ages. I took a leisurely walk, admiring the exotic plants and enjoying the tranquility. I even ventured onto the canopy walkway, which offered breathtaking views of the gardens from above. It was a bit unnerving at first, being so high up, but the panoramic views were worth it. I made a mental note to bring Ama here someday; she would absolutely love the children’s playground and the open spaces.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
Next on the agenda was the Accra Zoo. Now, I'll be honest, my expectations weren't sky-high. Zoos can sometimes be a bit underwhelming, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's located within the Achimota Forest, giving it a unique safari feel. I saw a variety of animals, including monkeys, reptiles, and various bird species. It was heartwarming to see the kids there, experiencing the animals up close. There was even an opportunity to handle a Royal python, which, admittedly, I politely declined. However, I did appreciate learning about the zoo's conservation efforts, particularly for endangered species like the Roloway Monkey and the White-naped Mangabey.

For lunch, I ventured to Vema City Kitchen and Executive Lounge. This restaurant was a delightful surprise, blending traditional Ghanaian flavors with modern culinary techniques. I opted for the grilled tilapia, a local favorite, and it was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the locals, soaking in the culture and the warmth of Ghanaian hospitality.

As the day wound down, I decided to embrace Accra's nightlife. I headed to Castle Beach Restaurant for dinner. The location, adjacent to the castle, was superb, offering great sea views. The ambiance was relaxed, with dark-wood platforms and bamboo screens. I enjoyed a flavorful seafood dish as I watched the sun dip below the horizon. It was the perfect way to reflect on the day's adventures.

To cap off the evening, I visited The Wells Lounge. This lounge is known for its vibrant atmosphere and eclectic decor. The rhythmic beats of the music and the joyful chatter of the patrons created a lively energy. I enjoyed a local beverage and mingled with fellow travelers and locals alike. It was a great way to unwind and experience Accra's nightlife scene.

Tomorrow, I am planning to travel a bit further afield, heading to Fort Prinzenstein in Keta and the Boti Waterfalls. I’ve heard wonderful things about both, and I’m excited to explore more of Ghana’s natural and historical sites. I am also hoping to find some unique beads at Sun Trade Beads. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery. I am also looking forward to breakfast at Auntie Muni Waakye Joint. I've heard so many good things about Waakye.
I am so grateful for these experiences, for the opportunity to reconnect with my heritage and to share these moments with you all. Until tomorrow!
