Wli Waterfalls and Local Delights

Today was all about embracing the natural beauty and local culture of Wli Nature Reserve. From the majestic Wli Waterfalls to the delicious Ghanaian cuisine and charming local crafts, it was a day filled with exploration and connection. It’s amazing how a single day can offer such a rich tapestry of experiences, leaving me with a deeper appreciation for this beautiful corner of Ghana.

The day began with an early breakfast at VOLTA GATE RESTAURANT. I fueled up with a hearty meal, ready for the adventures that lay ahead. The anticipation of seeing Wli Waterfalls, the highest in West Africa, had me practically bouncing in my seat. After breakfast, I made my way to the falls, eager to witness their splendor.

The hike to Wli Waterfalls was an experience in itself. The trail wound through lush forests, with the vibrant greenery creating a soothing backdrop. The air was thick with humidity, a reminder of the approaching rainy season. I crossed several small rivers, each adding to the charm of the journey. The sound of the rushing water grew louder as I approached, heightening the sense of excitement. The hike was moderately challenging, with some steep sections, but definitely manageable. I was grateful for my hiking boots, which provided the necessary grip on the sometimes slippery terrain.

Finally, the falls came into view, and I was immediately captivated. Wli Waterfalls is truly a sight to behold, cascading down with such force and grace. The sheer height of the falls is impressive, and the surrounding cliffs provide a dramatic setting. I spent a good amount of time simply taking in the view, feeling the mist on my face and listening to the thunderous roar of the water. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel – to witness the raw power and beauty of nature.

I opted for the hike to the lower falls, which was described as a relatively easy walk. However, I learned that there is also the option to hike to the upper falls, which is a more challenging trek. The hike to the lower falls took about an hour and a half, and the path was mostly flat with a few river crossings. The upper falls, I heard, is a 6-8 hour round trip and requires a good level of fitness. Perhaps next time, I'll challenge myself with the upper falls, but for today, the lower falls were perfect.

As I stood there, mesmerized by the cascading water, I couldn't help but reflect on my journey so far. Being back in Ghana, exploring my roots, felt incredibly fulfilling. It was a reminder of where I came from, and it deepened my connection to this land. I thought of Ama and Klaus back in Potsdam, and how much I wanted to share this experience with them. I imagined Ama’s eyes wide with wonder at the sight of the waterfall, and Klaus’s appreciation for the natural landscape. It solidified my resolve to bring them here someday soon.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, like standing in awe before a waterfall, feeling connected to something larger than yourself.

After the invigorating experience at Wli Waterfalls, it was time for lunch. I headed to Bravos Food Restaurants, eager to sample some local Ghanaian cuisine. I decided to try the fufu with groundnut soup, a classic dish that I remember fondly from my childhood. The fufu was soft and doughy, and the groundnut soup was rich and flavorful. It was a taste of home, and it warmed my soul. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but think of my mother, who used to make this dish for me when I was growing up in Kintampo. It brought back so many memories of family gatherings and the comforting aromas of Ghanaian cooking.

With my belly full and my spirits high, I decided to indulge in a bit of shopping. Pixie Gift Castle caught my eye with its colorful display of local crafts and souvenirs. I browsed through the various items, admiring the intricate beadwork, wood carvings, and textiles. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-woven basket, which I plan to use as a decorative piece in our home in Potsdam. I also picked up a few small trinkets for Ama, knowing that she would love the bright colors and playful designs. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and I'm always happy to find unique and meaningful souvenirs to bring back home.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Hill Sanctuary Ghana for dinner. This restaurant is known for its tranquil atmosphere and delicious Ghanaian dishes. The setting was serene, with lush greenery and soft lighting creating a relaxing ambiance. I ordered the tilapia with banku, another Ghanaian favorite. The tilapia was grilled to perfection, and the banku was smooth and tangy. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure and exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had packed into a single day. From the awe-inspiring Wli Waterfalls to the flavorful Ghanaian cuisine and the charming local crafts, it was a day that touched all the senses. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Wli Nature Reserve.

Tomorrow, I am planning to visit the Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary. I'm excited to see the monkeys and learn more about the local wildlife. I am also looking forward to trying some new restaurants, including Auntie Muni Waakye Joint for breakfast, Odo Ho Special Fufu Joint for lunch, and In-n-out chillies for dinner. And, if I have time, I might check out Meet Me There Pub for a drink.

As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. This solo journey to Wli Nature Reserve has been transformative, allowing me to reconnect with my roots and discover new facets of myself. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with you, and I hope that my words inspire you to embark on your own adventures.
