Today was a beautiful blend of nature, culture, and culinary delights in and around Kumasi. It felt like a genuine immersion into the heart of Ghana, experiencing the simple joys that make this country so special. From the serene landscapes to the bustling city life, every moment was a vibrant reminder of why I embarked on this journey of reconnection.

The day began with an early start, eager to visit the Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary. I had heard so much about this inland Ramsar site and its importance for bird conservation. I grabbed a quick bite – some bread and a banana from a local vendor – before hopping on a tro-tro heading northwest of Kumasi. The ride itself was an experience, the vibrant music and chatter of the passengers a constant reminder of the lively spirit of Ghana.

Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary: A Symphony of Nature

The sanctuary is about 23 kilometers from Kumasi. The air was noticeably fresher as we approached, a welcome change from the city bustle. I paid the entrance fee and was immediately greeted by a guide who seemed genuinely passionate about the sanctuary. He explained that Owabi is not just a haven for birds but also a vital water source for Kumasi, with the Owabi Dam playing a crucial role.

As we ventured into the sanctuary, I was immediately struck by the tranquility of the place. The guide pointed out the 'Bamboo Cathedral,' a natural marvel formed by towering bamboo stalks arching overhead. It created a cool, shaded pathway, and the gentle rustling of the leaves was incredibly soothing.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

We continued our walk, and he shared interesting facts about the local flora and fauna. I learned that the sanctuary is home to over 160 species of birds, both resident and migratory. Although September to February is the peak season for migratory birds, there were still plenty to see. I spotted herons, kites, and various forest birds, their calls echoing through the trees. The guide mentioned that lucky visitors might even spot Mona monkeys, bushbucks, or antelopes, but we weren't so fortunate today. However, I did see a few vibrant butterflies dancing through the air. I was also told about the strict conservation rules, which prohibit visitors from picking anything from the forest or leaving anything behind, reinforcing the importance of preserving this natural space.

We explored the Owabi Dam and the surrounding lake, a serene body of water that reflects the surrounding greenery. The guide explained that visitors could take canoes out on the lake or even try recreational fishing. I opted for a leisurely walk along the shore, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful scenery. The sanctuary truly felt like a world away from the city, a perfect place for introspection and connecting with nature.

The Jollof rice was perfectly spiced, and the goat meat was tender and flavorful. It was a delicious and satisfying meal that showcased the rich and diverse flavors of Ghanaian cuisine. The ambiance of the restaurant was lively and welcoming, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a good meal.

As evening approached, I sought a place to unwind and enjoy the city's vibrant nightlife. I started with dinner at Liberation View Spot, hoping to catch a glimpse of the sunset over the city. The restaurant offered a panoramic view of Kumasi, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. I savored a plate of grilled tilapia, a local favorite, while watching the city lights begin to twinkle below. The gentle breeze and the stunning view made it a perfect spot to reflect on the day's adventures.

To cap off the evening, I decided to visit The Republic Bar & Grill, known for its lively atmosphere and creative cocktails. Although it's a bit of a drive to Accra, I figured it was worth it for the experience. The bar was buzzing with energy, a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the music and drinks. I ordered a Coco, a local cocktail recommended by the bartender, and settled in to soak up the atmosphere. The Republic Bar & Grill is known for featuring non-mainstream artists and creating a space where people can chill and connect. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and cultural immersion. The music, the friendly chatter, and the delicious cocktail created a memorable experience that encapsulated the spirit of Ghana.
