Exploring the Cultural Riches of Ise Shima with Aisha
Day 4: Spiritual Echoes and Craft Brews: A Sunday Stroll Through Ise Shima
Discover the serene beauty of Ise Shima with visits to Izawanomiya Shrine, Hinjitsukan Museum, and local flavors at Ise Kadoya Beer.
A Day of Reflection and Refreshments
Today was a day of serene reflection intertwined with delightful discoveries here in Ise Shima. Aisha and I embarked on a journey that touched both the spiritual and the historical heart of this region, followed by an exploration of its local culinary scene. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you're open to the unexpected detours and hidden gems.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant La Mer. Fuelled up, we set out to explore the cultural and historical sights of Ise Shima.
A Sacred Start at Izawanomiya
Our first stop was Izawanomiya, a place of profound spiritual significance. It is said that long ago, Yamatohime no Mikoto, while touring the province of Shima, instructed Izawa Tominomikoto to construct it. Known as the No. 1 shrine in Shima, it holds a special place as a *Betsugu Naiku* of Ise Grand Shrine. As we approached, the air was thick with a sense of tranquility, a feeling that always resonates deeply within me, reminding me of the quiet moments I cherish back in Ottawa. The shrine is surrounded by a solemn and sacred atmosphere.

We walked through the serene grounds, observing the meticulous care given to every corner. The ancient trees stood as silent witnesses to centuries of prayers and rituals. I took a moment to reflect on my own spiritual journey, the values instilled in me by my upbringing in Wamba, and how they continue to guide me through life's adventures. Aisha and I took our time, offering our prayers for peace and prosperity for our family. It's fascinating to know that Izawanomiya enshrines the soul of Amaterasu-Omikami and has been revered as a 'farmiya shrine' since ancient times. The locals have historically prayed here for a bountiful harvest of seafood and mountain produce.
Visiting sacred places always brings a sense of perspective, reminding us of the enduring power of faith and tradition in a rapidly changing world.
Stepping Back in Time at HINJITSUKAN
Next on our itinerary was HINJITSUKAN, a former guesthouse built in 1887. This stunning building was originally constructed to host important guests visiting the Ise Shrines. Today, it serves as a museum, showcasing architectural and interior designs from the Meiji Period. As we stepped inside, it felt like stepping back in time.

The building itself is a masterpiece of wooden construction, completed in just three months. The rooms are adorned with ornate decorations and classical designs, befitting its status as a guesthouse for royalty and dignitaries. Aisha was particularly impressed by the Grand Hall, a 120-tatami mat banquet hall with an elaborate Momoyama-style ceiling featuring intricate designs and gold leaf gilding. I was more drawn to the *Goten no Ma*, the room reserved for the highest-ranked guests, which offered stunning views of the meticulously landscaped garden and the sea. We learned that the gardens were designed by renowned gardeners, adding to the overall sense of harmony and elegance.
It was interesting to see the blend of traditional Japanese style with Western influences, a visible reminder of Japan's eagerness to embrace new ideas during the Meiji era. The museum also displayed items detailing the history of Futami, as well as the works of Nakamura Sashu, a local painter. Although the displays lacked English explanations, we were provided with an English pamphlet that helped us understand the significance of each exhibit.
A Culinary Detour: Satonaka Sushi
By lunchtime, our stomachs were beginning to rumble, so we decided to make a detour to Satonaka Sushi. It was a delightful, unassuming place, offering some of the freshest sushi I've ever tasted. The chef's skillful knife work was evident in every slice, and the flavors were clean and vibrant. Aisha, who is usually cautious about trying new foods, was pleasantly surprised by the quality and taste. We enjoyed a selection of *nigiri* and *maki*, savoring each bite as we discussed our morning adventures.

Ise Kadoya Beer: A Taste of Local Brews
In the evening, we made our way to Ise Kadoya Beer for dinner. This restaurant is run by the highly regarded Ise Kadoya brewery in Mie Prefecture. They serve regional cuisine and craft sake from Mie, along with their own craft beers. As a software engineer, I appreciate the precision and artistry that goes into crafting a perfect beer, and Ise Kadoya certainly delivered. I opted for one of their seasonal brews, while Aisha enjoyed a lighter, fruit-infused sake. To accompany our drinks, we ordered some of their specialties, including grilled yellowtail and miso-grilled chicken. The flavors were bold and satisfying, a perfect complement to the refreshing beverages.

Ise Kadoya Beer has a selection of grilled meats and fish that pair wonderfully with their beers and sake. They have been producing excellent miso for over a century, which enhances the flavors of their dishes. The menu also includes raw items like sashimi, fried items, and rice and noodle-based dishes. They even offer oden simmered in an Ise miso-based broth, which is a unique and delicious offering.
Evening Relaxation at MOKU ISESHIMA
To cap off the evening, we decided to visit MOKU ISESHIMA for a nightcap. This bar is known for its relaxing atmosphere and stunning views. Fortunately it was only a short taxi ride away. We sat outside, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the sound of the waves. Aisha ordered a glass of sparkling sake, while I opted for a local craft beer. We chatted about our day, reminiscing about the beautiful sights and delicious flavors we had experienced. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on our adventures.

Looking Ahead
As I sit here, penning down the events of the day, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Ise Shima. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Sengukan Museum and the Meoto Iwa (Wedded Rocks). Aisha is particularly excited about the Meoto Iwa, as she has heard so much about their romantic significance. We'll also be having breakfast at Ama Hut Satoumian, lunch at Yashiro, and dinner at La Mer the Classic. It promises to be another day filled with exploration and discovery.
Before I turn in for the night, I must remember to charge my camera and find a replacement for the portable charger I forgot back in Ottawa. Lessons learned on the road, I suppose. Until tomorrow, *o kaerinasai* from Ise Shima.
