Today, my second day in Chefchaouen, was a deep dive into the heart of this mesmerizing blue city. I set out to explore its historical landmarks and natural beauty, eager to uncover the stories woven into its enchanting streets. The cool January air was crisp, a gentle reminder that winter holds the Rif Mountains in its sway, but the promise of adventure kept me warm. I was also eager to try some local cuisine, as I’ve always believed that experiencing the food of a place is as important as seeing its landmarks.



My day began with a hearty breakfast at Mandala. The café was a cozy haven, the aroma of coffee mingling with the sweet scent of Moroccan pastries. I indulged in a traditional Moroccan breakfast, a delightful spread of goat cheese, eggs, and olive oil, setting the perfect tone for the day ahead. It was a great way to fuel up before exploring the city's attractions.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I made my way to the Kasbah. The Kasbah of Chefchaouen, a historical fortress dating back to the 15th century, stands as a testament to the city's rich past. Built by Moulay Ali Ben Rachid, it was initially constructed to defend against Portuguese incursions and later served as a stronghold against Berber tribes and Spanish forces. The views from the Kasbah were stunning, offering a panoramic vista of the blue city stretching out before me. Ras El Ma, meaning Head of the Water in Arabic, is a serene oasis where fresh mountain water flows into the town. The spring is not only a source of drinking water but also a gathering place for locals, who come to wash clothes and socialize. As I approached Ras El Ma, I could hear the soothing sound of water cascading over rocks, a welcome contrast to the bustling medina. The area was lush with greenery, a vibrant splash of color against the blue backdrop of the city. I watched as local women knelt by the stream, scrubbing clothes with practiced ease, their laughter echoing through the air. It was a scene of everyday life, a reminder that amidst the beauty and history, Chefchaouen is also a living, breathing community.

The source of Ras el-Maa is considered the cornerstone of Chefchaouen’s construction. This spring has been the only source of drinking water for the town. In the past, it powered the water mills along the stream and irrigated the farms. Today, managed by the National Office of Drinking Water, it is also a tourist attraction. I spent some time simply sitting by the spring, observing the flow of water and the rhythm of local life. It was a peaceful interlude, a chance to reflect on my journey and the beauty of Chefchaouen.



For lunch, I sought out Restaurant Al Wiam, known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and warm hospitality. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, adorned with traditional Moroccan decor that added to the overall dining experience. I decided to try the lamb tagine, a local specialty, and I was not disappointed. The lamb was tender and flavorful, the spices perfectly balanced, and the tagine was served with freshly baked bread that was simply divine. The staff were friendly and attentive, eager to share their knowledge of Moroccan cuisine and make recommendations. It was a truly memorable meal, a testament to the culinary richness of Chefchaouen.

In the evening, I decided to try Bar Oum Rabie, known as one of the few places in Chefchaouen that serves alcohol. It’s open from afternoon until midnight, making it an ideal place to relax. I ordered a glass of Moroccan wine and savored the moment, reflecting on the day's adventures. The bar had a lively atmosphere, filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the vibrant ambiance of Chefchaouen. It was a great way to unwind and soak in the city's unique charm.

The portion was generous, and I savored every bite. The outdoor seating area provided a perfect vantage point for watching the city come alive at night, the blue buildings illuminated by soft lights. It was a magical setting, and I felt grateful to be experiencing it.

I am already looking forward to tomorrow, where I plan to explore Plaza Uta el Hamman and the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen. I might even pick up a souvenir at Hibart Souvenirs Shop. Chefchaouen has a way of captivating the soul, and I am eager to uncover more of its secrets.
