A Fond Farewell

As my journey in the captivating blue city of Chefchaouen draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. There's a tinge of sadness at the thought of leaving this serene haven, but also a profound sense of gratitude for the experiences and memories I've gathered. This solo trip has been nothing short of transformative, allowing me to connect with a culture so different from my own, and to discover a sense of peace amidst the vibrant chaos of Moroccan life.

My final day began with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Triana. The morning air was crisp, a typical January day here, and the aroma of freshly baked bread and mint tea filled the air. Triana is a gem, offering not just delicious food but also a serene ambiance that perfectly sets the tone for the day. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast of msemen and honey, accompanied by a steaming glass of mint tea, as I watched the city slowly awaken. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making me feel right at home. It's these small moments of connection that truly enrich a travel experience.

With a full stomach and a heart full of anticipation, I set out to explore Plaza Mohammed V. This square is the heart of the new city, a bustling hub where locals and tourists mingle. The gardens were meticulously maintained, offering a refreshing splash of green against the blue backdrop of the city. I took a leisurely stroll, observing families picnicking, friends chatting, and children playing. The energy of the plaza was infectious, a vibrant reminder of the life that thrives within these blue walls.

From Plaza Mohammed V, I made my way to Boulevard Mohamed V, a bustling avenue lined with shops and cafes. The boulevard was alive with activity, vendors hawking their wares, locals going about their daily routines, and tourists like myself soaking in the atmosphere. I paused to admire the architecture, a blend of traditional Moroccan design and modern influences. The shops along the boulevard offered a treasure trove of souvenirs, from handcrafted leather goods to colorful textiles. I resisted the urge to splurge, knowing that my suitcase was already bursting with mementos from my trip.

Travel is more than seeing the sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.

Lunchtime found me at Chez Aziz, a charming restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. I opted for a tagine, a slow-cooked stew that is a staple of Moroccan cuisine. The tagine was rich and flavorful, the tender meat falling off the bone. I savored each bite, appreciating the complex blend of spices that made this dish so unique. The restaurant itself was cozy and inviting, with traditional Moroccan decor and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It was the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a leisurely meal.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at B & H Art Shop. This shop is a haven for art lovers, showcasing a wide range of handcrafted goods, from paintings and sculptures to jewelry and ceramics. I spent hours browsing the collection, admiring the skill and creativity of the local artisans. I finally settled on a small painting of a blue cityscape, a perfect reminder of my time in Chefchaouen. The shop owner was a friendly and knowledgeable man, eager to share his passion for Moroccan art. It was a pleasure to support local artists and take home a piece of Moroccan culture.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ for my final Moroccan dinner. The restaurant is known for its stunning views of the city, and I was lucky enough to snag a table on the terrace. As I dined on a delicious meal of grilled meats and vegetables, I watched the sun set over Chefchaouen, casting a golden glow over the blue buildings. The scene was breathtaking, a perfect ending to my time in this magical city. The staff were attentive and friendly, making me feel like a valued guest.

Reflecting on my time here, I am struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Moroccan people. From the shopkeepers to the restaurant staff, everyone I encountered was eager to share their culture and make me feel welcome. I am also grateful for the opportunity to explore Chefchaouen at my own pace, to wander through the blue streets, to savor the local cuisine, and to connect with the city on a deeper level. This solo journey has been a reminder of the importance of stepping outside of one's comfort zone and embracing new experiences. It has also reinforced my belief in the power of travel to broaden one's perspective and foster understanding between cultures.

I am particularly grateful for the lessons this journey has taught me about myself. As a software engineer, I spend much of my time immersed in the logical world of code and algorithms. This trip has allowed me to tap into my creative side, to see the world through a different lens. I have rediscovered my passion for photography, capturing the beauty of Chefchaouen in countless images. I have also found a new appreciation for the simple things in life, like a cup of mint tea shared with a friendly face or a quiet moment spent watching the sunset.

As I prepare to leave Chefchaouen, I carry with me a piece of this blue city. I will cherish the memories I have made, the lessons I have learned, and the friendships I have forged. I know that this journey will stay with me long after I return to Ottawa, influencing my perspective and shaping my future. I am already looking forward to my next adventure, wherever it may take me. Perhaps Aisha will join me next time; I know she would adore the vibrant colors and intricate designs of the Moroccan textiles. Or maybe Tunde and Funke will be interested in exploring the Rif Mountains with me.

For now, though, it is time to say goodbye to Chefchaouen. I will miss the blue streets, the vibrant culture, and the delicious Moroccan cuisine. But I leave with a full heart and a renewed sense of purpose. Thank you, Chefchaouen, for an unforgettable journey.

The journey back home will be a long one, a bus ride back to Tangier and then the flight back to Ottawa. I've already started thinking about how to incorporate some of the design elements I've seen here into our home. Aisha has always appreciated my eye for detail, and I think she'll love the new throw pillows and maybe even a small rug. It's these little reminders that will keep the spirit of Chefchaouen alive in our home.

And so, as the sun sets on my final day in Chefchaouen, I raise a glass of mint tea to this magical city. May its blue walls continue to inspire and enchant all who visit. Until we meet again, Chefchaouen, goodbye.

Tomorrow marks the end of this chapter, as I make my way back to Tangier to catch my flight home. It's always a bittersweet moment, the end of an adventure, but I know I'm carrying so much more with me than just souvenirs. I'm bringing back stories, experiences, and a renewed sense of wonder that I can't wait to share with Aisha and the kids.

I'm already looking forward to planning our next family trip, maybe somewhere closer to home this time, like a hike in Gatineau Park. But no matter where we go, I know that the spirit of adventure and discovery will always be with us, thanks in part to the lessons I've learned in this enchanting blue city. Farewell, Chefchaouen. Until next time.

Safe travels, everyone, and may your own journeys be as enriching and transformative as mine has been here.
