Kyoto, Until Next Time

As our Kyoto adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared. Today, our final day, was a delightful mix of history, cinema, and culinary exploration, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of this captivating city. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day, even when you think you've already seen so much!

Our day began, as most good days do, with a delicious breakfast. We headed to Jiki Miyazawa, a restaurant that had been on my list since planning this trip. The reviews I'd read raved about their traditional Japanese breakfast, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant itself was serene, with a minimalist design that allowed the food to take center stage. I savored every bite, knowing that this was one of the last tastes of authentic Kyoto cuisine I'd have for a while.

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, Daniel and I set off for the Kyoto Railway Museum. I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Trains aren’t typically my thing, but Daniel was really excited, and I always appreciate seeing his enthusiasm. Plus, I'm always open to learning something new. We hopped on the train and made our way to the museum, and from the moment we walked in, I was impressed.

The Kyoto Railway Museum is a treasure trove of railway history, showcasing Japan's progress in modernization through its impressive collection of trains. From the early steam locomotives to the sleek Shinkansen bullet trains, it was fascinating to see how far the railway system has come. Daniel, of course, was in his element, pointing out various technical details and sharing interesting facts about each train. I particularly enjoyed seeing the original Shinkansen; it still looks futuristic even today. We explored the vast exhibition area, marveling at the sheer size and engineering of these machines. There were interactive displays and simulators, which were a lot of fun, even for someone like me who isn't a die-hard train enthusiast. I even managed to convince Daniel to wait in line with me to pilot a Shinkansen simulator!

After a morning of railway adventures, it was time for lunch. We decided to try Arancino Kyoto, an Italian restaurant that promised a unique dining experience. I know, Italian in Kyoto sounds a bit strange, but I had heard great things about it, and I was curious. The restaurant was located in a beautiful setting, and the interior was elegant and inviting. We were seated at a table overlooking a serene garden, which added to the ambiance. The food was exquisite, a fusion of Italian flavors with a Japanese twist. Daniel and I shared a few dishes, savoring each bite and appreciating the creativity of the chef. It was a delightful culinary experience, and I'm glad we took a chance on something different.

With our appetites satisfied, we made our way to Toei Kyoto Studio Park, a place where you can step back in time and immerse yourself in the world of Japanese cinema. This theme park is also a working film studio, and as we walked through the streets of the recreated Edo period town, we felt like we had been transported to another era. We watched a ninja show, which was incredibly cheesy but entertaining. The actors were skilled and energetic, and the special effects were impressive. We also explored the various attractions, including a haunted house and a ninja mystery maze, which were both a lot of fun. It was fascinating to see the sets and props used in the films, and I couldn't help but imagine what it must be like to work on a jidaigeki film.

One of the highlights of the park was the opportunity to dress up in traditional costumes and take photos. Daniel, bless his heart, agreed to dress up as a samurai, and I chose to be a geisha. We wandered around the park, posing for photos and feeling like we were part of a movie. It was a fun and memorable experience, and I'm so glad we did it.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to do a little shopping at Kyoto LOFT. I had heard that it was a great place to find unique souvenirs and gifts, and I was not disappointed. The store was filled with all sorts of interesting items, from traditional crafts to modern gadgets. I picked up a few small gifts for friends and family back home, as well as a few things for myself. It was a nice way to end the day, and I left feeling like I had found some treasures to remind me of our time in Kyoto.

For our final dinner in Kyoto, we chose Ryu no Hige, a French restaurant known for its innovative cuisine. The restaurant was located in a stylish building, and the interior was modern and chic. We opted for the tasting menu, which featured a series of small, artfully presented dishes. Each course was a surprise, a burst of flavors and textures that delighted the senses. The chef's creativity was evident in every dish, and I appreciated the attention to detail. It was a perfect ending to our culinary journey in Kyoto.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of sadness that our time in Kyoto is coming to an end. This city has captured my heart with its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and delicious cuisine. I've learned so much about Japanese history and traditions, and I've experienced things that I will never forget. From the serene temples and gardens to the bustling markets and modern museums, Kyoto has something for everyone.

Tomorrow, we will be heading back to Osaka to catch our flight home. I'm excited to see my friends and family, but I know that I will miss Kyoto dearly. I hope to return someday and continue exploring this amazing city.

As for tomorrow, well, there is no tomorrow on this trip, sadly, as our flight leaves in the morning. I am sure that we will be back to Japan someday, but for now, it is time to say good bye.

Until then, sayonara Kyoto, and thank you for the memories.
