Echoes of Emperors and Shoguns

Today’s journey through Kyoto was a deep dive into the heart of Japan’s imperial and shogunate history. From the opulent Nijo Castle to the serene Kyoto Imperial Palace and its surrounding gardens, every corner whispered tales of emperors, shoguns, and centuries of tradition. It was a day of contrasts, blending the grandeur of power with the tranquility of nature, a balance that I found truly captivating.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Arash's Kitchen. It was a delightful start, fueling us up with a mix of Persian and Indian flavors. I always appreciate a good, filling meal before a day of exploring, and this place certainly delivered. I was especially happy they had halal options available.

First on our itinerary was Nijō Castle. As we approached, the sheer scale of the fortifications was immediately striking. Unlike the European castles I'm familiar with, Nijō Castle doesn't scream 'castle' at first glance. Instead, it exudes a more subtle, yet powerful presence. It was built by the Tokugawa shogunate as their Kyoto residence, a place from which to project their authority while keeping a close eye on the imperial court. The contrast to the castles in the UK is huge, but it also has its own unique charm that I really appreciated.

Walking through the castle grounds, I was struck by the intricate details of the Ninomaru Palace. The *Nightingale Floors* were particularly fascinating. Designed to chirp underfoot, they served as an ingenious security system, alerting the occupants to any unwanted intruders. Daniel, ever the history buff, was in his element, pointing out architectural nuances and recounting tales of political intrigue. The castle's gardens, though stark in the winter landscape, hinted at the vibrant beauty they would hold in warmer months. We could imagine the cherry blossoms in full bloom, as some reviews mentioned the Nijo Castle being spectacular during that time. It was easy to picture the Shogun enjoying the scenery.

History is not the past but a map of the past, drawn from a particular point of view.

After immersing ourselves in the world of the shogunate, we made our way to the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Located within the expansive Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, the palace offered a stark contrast to the imposing Nijo Castle. Where the castle was a symbol of military might, the palace exuded an air of refined elegance. The palace served as the residence of Japan's Imperial Family for over a thousand years, until 1868 when the capital was moved to Tokyo.

Walking through the palace grounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence. This was where emperors had lived, ruled, and performed sacred ceremonies for centuries. The buildings themselves, rebuilt in 1855 after a fire, showcased the evolution of traditional Japanese architecture. The Shishinden, or Hall for State Ceremonies, was particularly impressive, its simple yet dignified design reflecting the essence of the imperial court. Daniel and I took our time wandering through the gardens, imagining what life must have been like within these walls during the height of the imperial era.

The Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, surrounding the Imperial Palace, provided a welcome respite from the historical intensity of the day. This vast green space, once the exclusive domain of the imperial court, is now open to the public. As we strolled through the garden, we noticed the plum blossoms starting to bloom, adding a touch of color to the winter landscape. I read that the plum blossom season peaks between late February and mid-March, so we were fortunate to catch the early blooms. The air was filled with their delicate fragrance, a subtle reminder of the approaching spring. We learned that the garden is home to over 50,000 trees and over 500 plant species, and also has a diverse and rich forest. Although most of the trees were bare, the garden still had a serene beauty, inviting us to slow down and appreciate the simple pleasures of nature.

For lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of French cuisine at French Dining Top of Kyoto. Perched on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel, this revolving restaurant offered stunning panoramic views of the city. It was a delightful experience, savoring exquisite French dishes while watching Kyoto slowly unfold beneath us. Daniel and I enjoyed the Wagyu steak and a glass of champagne. The elegant atmosphere and impeccable service made it a truly memorable meal. It was also nice to experience some fine dining after having so much traditional Japanese food.

In the evening, we ventured out to Hiroshima-Style Okonomiyaki & Teppan-yaki Kamehameha for dinner. This cozy restaurant offered a completely different culinary experience. I loved watching the chef prepare the okonomiyaki right in front of us, skillfully flipping and layering the ingredients on the teppan grill. The savory pancake was delicious, a perfect blend of textures and flavors. It was the kind of hearty, comforting meal that warms you from the inside out. Daniel was particularly impressed with the chef's technique, noting the precision and care that went into each dish. I read that reservations are required, and I can see why. It's a popular spot, and the food is worth the planning.

To cap off the evening, we decided to check out Bar K6. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the city, this sophisticated bar was the perfect place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing. The atmosphere was intimate and inviting, with soft lighting and comfortable seating. The bartender was a true mixologist, crafting innovative cocktails with precision and flair. Daniel opted for a classic whiskey, while I decided to try one of their signature fruit cocktails. As we sipped our drinks, we reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's rich history and culture.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Heian Shrine, Philosopher's Path, and Nanzen-ji Temple. I'm particularly excited about the Philosopher's Path, a scenic route that follows a canal lined with cherry trees. I've heard it's especially beautiful in the early morning, so we're planning to get an early start. We will also be sure to check out the Daimaru Kyoto Store to do some shopping. I’m hoping to find some unique souvenirs to bring back home to Bristol.

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. It's about immersing myself in different cultures, learning about the past, and appreciating the beauty of the present. Kyoto has a way of transporting you to another time, a place where emperors and shoguns once ruled, and where tradition and nature intertwine in perfect harmony. I am so excited to see what tomorrow brings!
