Exploring Reykjavik: A Family Adventure in Iceland
Day 5: Stepping Back in Time and Chasing the Northern Lights: A Day of Icelandic Sagas and Coastal Beauty
Delving into Iceland's Viking history at the Saga Museum and hunting for the elusive Northern Lights at Grótta Island Lighthouse.
Echoes of Vikings and Whispers of the Sea
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey from the echoes of Iceland's past to the serene beauty of its coastline. We immersed ourselves in the sagas of Vikings and then chased the elusive promise of the Northern Lights. It was a day filled with history, hope, and the raw, untamed beauty that defines Iceland.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bergsson Mathús. Fuelled up with their delicious offerings, Daniel and I set off to explore the Saga Museum. The museum is conveniently located near our hotel, Grandi by Center Hotels. The Saga Museum promised a vivid journey into Iceland's Viking past, and it certainly delivered. From the moment we stepped inside, we were transported back in time, surrounded by incredibly lifelike wax figures depicting key moments and figures from the Icelandic sagas.

Each exhibit was meticulously crafted, complete with detailed costumes, authentic settings, and a multi-language audio guide that brought the stories to life. It was a truly immersive experience, far from the dry history lessons of my school days in Kazakhstan. I found myself particularly drawn to the tales of Iceland's early settlers and the fierce battles that shaped the nation. Daniel, ever the history buff, was fascinated by the intricate details of Viking weaponry and shipbuilding. We even had the chance to dress up in Viking costumes, resulting in some hilarious photos that I'm sure will become family legends.
The past is never truly gone; it echoes in the present, shaping who we are and what we aspire to be.
After delving into the depths of Icelandic history, we decided to grab lunch at Kol Restaurant. The modern Icelandic cuisine was a delightful contrast to the ancient tales we had just absorbed. The flavors were fresh and innovative, showcasing the best of Iceland's local ingredients. Daniel opted for the Arctic char, while I savored the lamb, both dishes were cooked to perfection.
With our appetites satisfied, we ventured to Rammagerdin, a renowned gift shop specializing in Icelandic design and craftsmanship. I wanted to find a special souvenir that captured the essence of our trip, something more meaningful than a mass-produced trinket. Rammagerdin did not disappoint. The shop was filled with beautiful woolen goods, handcrafted ceramics, and unique artwork, all made by local artisans. I finally settled on a hand-knitted wool scarf with traditional Kazakh patterns, a perfect blend of my heritage and Icelandic craftsmanship. It was a lovely way to support local artisans and take home a piece of Iceland's soul.
As evening approached, we set our sights on Grótta Island Lighthouse. Located on the tip of the Seltjarnarnes Peninsula, Grótta is a tidal island accessible only during low tide. We checked the tide tables and made our way to the island, eager to witness the sunset and, if we were lucky, catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. The walk to the lighthouse was breathtaking. The rugged coastline stretched out before us, the waves crashing against the rocks, and the sky painted in hues of orange and pink. It felt like we were at the edge of the world, far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life.

We reached the lighthouse just as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the landscape. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the salty scent of the sea. We waited patiently, hoping for a break in the clouds that would reveal the elusive Aurora Borealis. While the Northern Lights remained hidden from us tonight, the beauty of the sunset and the tranquility of the surroundings were more than enough to make the trip worthwhile. We learned that Grótta became a nature reserve in 1974 and it is forbidden to visit it during nesting season, from May 1 to July 15.
As we walked back to the mainland, the sky began to darken, and the stars emerged, twinkling like diamonds against a velvet cloth. We decided to end our day with dinner at Mat Bar, known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious Icelandic cuisine. Over a plate of hearty fish stew, we recounted the highlights of our day, from the Viking sagas to the stunning coastal scenery. It was a perfect ending to a day of exploration and discovery.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Reykjavik Maritime Museum and Laugardalur. I'm particularly excited about visiting the Maritime Museum, as I've always been fascinated by the sea and its role in shaping human history. And who knows, maybe we'll have another chance to chase the Northern Lights. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of today, a day of echoes and whispers, of Vikings and the sea.
As I reflect on our day, I'm reminded of the importance of connecting with the past and appreciating the beauty of the present. Iceland has a way of doing that, of drawing you in with its rich history and breathtaking landscapes. It's a place where you can step back in time and feel the weight of centuries, while also being inspired by the endless possibilities of the future. And as we continue our journey, I'm excited to see what other treasures this magical island has in store for us.
Join us as we explore Reykjavik's rich cultural heritage, taste local Icelandic cuisine, and embark on outdoor adventures with family.
