Cultural and Historical Exploration in Cusco with Friends
Day 13: A Farewell to Cusco: Embracing the Heart of the Andes
Reflecting on my Cusco adventure, from vibrant markets to historical plazas, savoring Peruvian cuisine and culture with cherished friends.
Adios, Cusco!
As our Peruvian adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey we've experienced in Cusco. Today was about soaking in the last moments, revisiting favorite spots, and savoring the unique atmosphere of this Andean gem. It’s hard to believe our time here is already over, but the memories and experiences will undoubtedly stay with me forever.
Our final day began, as many others did, with a hearty breakfast at Inkazuela. The cozy atmosphere and delicious stews made it a perfect spot to start the day. Maximilian and I both opted for the Cocina Andino, savoring the familiar flavors of lamb and chicken stewed to perfection. It was a comforting and satisfying meal that fueled us for our last explorations. It's funny how quickly you can become attached to a place; Inkazuela already felt like a familiar friend.

After breakfast, we strolled towards the Plaza Mayor de Cusco, the heart of the city. The plaza was bustling with activity, locals going about their daily routines, and tourists capturing the beauty of the surrounding colonial architecture. The vibrant energy of the square was infectious, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a lively and historic place. I took a moment to simply observe, etching the scene into my memory. There weren't any specific events taking place today, but honestly, the everyday life unfolding in the Plaza Mayor was entertainment enough. I remember when Maximilian and I first moved to Heidelberg, how overwhelming it felt to be surrounded by so much history. Now, years later, I feel a similar sense of awe here in Cusco.

From the Plaza Mayor, we wandered into the Cusco Historical Center, a labyrinth of narrow streets and colonial buildings. We allowed ourselves to get lost in the maze, discovering hidden courtyards, artisan workshops, and charming cafes. The historical center is a treasure trove of architectural wonders, with each building telling a story of Cusco's rich past. I especially enjoyed admiring the intricate stonework and the blend of Inca and Spanish influences in the design.

Travel is more than seeing the sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
Our wanderings led us to TEXTILES POMATAYLLA, a delightful shop showcasing traditional Andean craftsmanship. As someone who appreciates handmade goods, I was immediately drawn to the intricate weavings and vibrant colors. The shop was filled with charming handmade items, each reflecting the rich heritage of the region. I ended up purchasing a beautifully woven table runner, a piece that will serve as a reminder of my time in Cusco and the artistry of its people. The shop owner was incredibly kind, explaining the different weaving techniques and the significance of the various patterns. It was fascinating to learn about the history and culture woven into each piece. I even picked up a small alpaca wool scarf for Sofia, hoping to share a piece of Peru with her.

For lunch, we decided to try Sepia Cusco, a restaurant known for its fusion cuisine. I opted for the lomo saltado, a classic Peruvian dish with a modern twist. The flavors were incredible, and the presentation was impeccable. Maximilian chose the aji de gallina and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sepia Cusco was a delightful culinary experience, a perfect blend of traditional and contemporary. The restaurant itself had a lovely ambiance, and the staff was attentive and friendly.

After lunch, we continued our exploration of the historical center, soaking in the last moments of our Cusco adventure. We stopped at a small cafe for a cup of coca tea, a local remedy for altitude sickness. Sipping the warm tea, I reflected on the incredible experiences we've had in Cusco, from exploring ancient ruins to immersing ourselves in the local culture. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been a journey of discovery and connection.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Fuego, Burgers and Barbecue Restaurant for our final dinner in Cusco. It might seem odd to choose a burger joint in Peru, but we were craving something familiar after days of traditional cuisine. Fuego did not disappoint. Maximilian went for the Angus Smoked Burger, while I decided to try the Wild Fire Burger with Alpaca. The burgers were juicy and flavorful, and the atmosphere was lively and fun. It was a perfect way to end our trip, with good food and good company. Plus, the restaurant is located with a great view into the Plaza, offering one last glimpse of the vibrant city.

Sitting there, enjoying my burger with friends, I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness that our time in Cusco was coming to an end. We reminisced about our favorite moments, from the breathtaking views of Machu Picchu to the colorful markets of the Sacred Valley. This trip has been an incredible adventure, one that I will cherish for years to come.
Tomorrow marks the end of our journey. We’ll be heading back to Lima, and then on to Frankfurt. As much as I’m looking forward to seeing Maximilian, Sofia and settling back into our routine in Heidelberg, a part of me will forever remain in the Andes. I’m bringing back not just souvenirs, but a renewed appreciation for different cultures, a deeper understanding of history, and a handful of unforgettable memories. I’m already dreaming about our next adventure!
Thank you, Cusco, for the memories and the magic.
