Echoes of the Inca Empire

Today was a day of delving deep into the heart of Cusco, a city that effortlessly blends its rich Incan past with a vibrant modern culture. It's amazing how the echoes of history resonate through the cobblestone streets and within the ancient stones that still stand proud. I was excited to explore more of what this incredible city has to offer, and today certainly didn't disappoint.

Our day began with a hearty vegan breakfast at Green Point Vegan Restaurant. Maximilian, who isn't vegan, was a little skeptical initially, but even he admitted that the food was delicious and satisfying. I had read about their extensive menu offering both Peruvian and international dishes, and it was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. The atmosphere was so relaxing, surrounded by plants in their covered garden. It’s a great spot to start the day in a peaceful setting.

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set off to explore Saqsaywaman. The sheer scale of this ancient complex is breathtaking. As we approached, the massive stone walls loomed before us, a testament to the incredible engineering skills of the Incas. I couldn't help but imagine what it must have been like during its prime, a bustling center of religious and administrative activity. The stones themselves are enormous, fitted together with such precision that it's hard to believe they were placed without modern tools. I learned that Sacsayhuaman, also spelled as Saqsawaman, means 'Royal Eagle'. Constructed during the reign of Pachacuti and his successors, its walls stand as a testimony to Inca power and their skill of blending their monumental structures harmoniously into the landscape. It's fascinating to think that this site was not only a fortress but also a temple, used for important Inca ceremonies.

As we wandered through the complex, our guide explained the different theories about its construction and purpose. Some believe it was primarily a fortress, designed to protect Cusco from invaders. Others suggest it was a religious site, dedicated to the sun god Inti. Regardless of its true purpose, there's no denying the power and majesty of Saqsaywaman. It is also the main stage for the Inti Raymi, the Inca Festival of the Sun, which is held each year.

The stones whisper stories of a civilization that valued precision, harmony, and a deep connection to the earth.

After spending hours exploring Saqsaywaman, we made our way back down into the city center to see the Twelve Angled Stone. Tucked away in an ancient Inca wall on Hatunrumiyoc Street, this stone is a marvel of Incan engineering. Each of its twelve angles fits perfectly into the surrounding stones, a testament to the Incas' mastery of stonework. It’s amazing to think that this stone was laid over 700 years ago. The stone is made of green diorite igneous rock, and weighs over six tons. It was originally part of the Inca Roca Palace, but became part of the Archbishop's palace in the early 20th century. I learned that the twelve angles are believed to represent the division of the 24 families of Cusco. Standing before it, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity and precision of the Inca stonemasons. It's details like this that make Cusco such a captivating city.

By this point, all the exploring had worked up quite an appetite, so we decided to treat ourselves to lunch at Uchu Peruvian Steakhouse. Maximilian was especially looking forward to this, as he's a big fan of steak. The restaurant had a cool, stylish vibe, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I opted for alpaca loin, wanting to try something truly local, while Maximilian went for the classic steak. The food was incredible! My alpaca was tender and flavorful, and Maximilian raved about his steak. We also loved the selection of dipping sauces that came with our meals, each one adding a unique twist to the flavors. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of sightseeing.

Before dinner, we stopped by the Handicraft Center Cusco, a sprawling marketplace filled with local crafts and souvenirs. I was on the hunt for a special memento of our trip, and I knew this was the place to find it. The center is huge, almost an entire block, with stalls selling clothing, textiles, jewelry, and more. It’s a great place to find unique items and support local artisans. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-woven scarf made from alpaca wool, the perfect way to remember our time in Cusco. It was nice to see native elements used, like alpaca wool, and ceramics, and jewelry with precious metals.

For dinner, we decided to try Morena Peruvian Kitchen, drawn in by its reputation for authentic Peruvian cuisine with a modern twist. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the menu was full of tempting options. We shared a few dishes, including the lomo saltado and the arroz con mariscos, both of which were bursting with flavor. The presentation of the dishes was also impressive, each plate a work of art. I was also impressed by the commitment to authenticity and the impeccable service. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.
