Echoes of the Past

Today, Cusco unveiled more of its secrets to me. It wasn't just about seeing ancient stones, but feeling the weight of history and the spirituality that permeates this land. With my friends by my side, I embarked on a journey to Q'enco and the Temple of the Moon, two sites that whisper tales of rituals, beliefs, and a deep connection to the cosmos.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mamá Jama Restaurant. The reviews I had read highlighted the great service, and they were spot on. It’s conveniently located, making it easy to find, and the staff truly made us feel welcomed. I savored some grilled chicken, which was perfect for the day ahead. Fortified, we set off to explore the archaeological sites just outside Cusco.

Q'enco was our first stop. The name itself, meaning labyrinth in Quechua, hints at the site's enigmatic nature. As we wandered through the complex, I was struck by the intricate rock carvings and the sense of mystery that hung in the air. It’s easy to see why the Spanish named it Q'enqo, those labyrinthine underground galleries are something else. Q'enco is located a few kilometers from Cusco, over 3,500 meters above sea level. I remember when Maximilian and I hiked in the Odenwald forest near Heidelberg, but this altitude was a different beast altogether. Luckily, I’ve acclimated well over the past week.

The scale of the rock work is impressive, and it's humbling to think about the Incas and their connection to the sun, moon, earth and stars. Our guide explained that Q'enco was likely used for religious ceremonies, possibly even sacrifices. I tried to imagine what it must have been like to participate in these ancient rituals, the air thick with incense and chanting. Standing in the amphitheater-like structure, I could almost hear the echoes of voices from centuries past.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are not about finding something new, but about seeing something old in a new light.

From Q'enco, we made our way to the Temple of the Moon, or Amaru Mach'ay. The Temple of the Moon is considered Cusco's most feminine temple. This site felt even more secluded and mystical than Q'enco. As we approached, I couldn't help but notice the queuña trees, which I learned create a habitat for birds and smaller plants. The Temple of the Moon is located between Qenko and Puka Pukara, off the paved road.

This temple is built into a natural cave, and as I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the sense of reverence. Carvings of snakes, pumas and other sacred animals adorned the walls, their forms illuminated by the soft light filtering through cracks in the rock. Our guide explained that the temple was likely used for lunar ceremonies, honoring the feminine energy of the moon. I found myself reflecting on the importance of balance in life, the need to honor both the masculine and feminine aspects of ourselves and the world around us.

I had read that the Temple of the Moon may have been made by the Killke people, who lived in the Cusco valley before the Inca. It's amazing to think about the layers of history contained within this site, the different cultures that have left their mark on this sacred space. It’s a reminder that we are all part of a larger story, a continuous chain of human experience.

After immersing ourselves in the ancient world, we returned to Cusco for a late lunch at Indigo Bar Restaurant. I had read that it had a cosmopolitan vibe, and it definitely did. I opted for a veggie dish, which was flavorful and satisfying. I made a mental note to try one of their fresh juices next time. Apparently, Indigo Bar is known for it's Thai food and cocktails and is a popular spot for travelers. I think Sofia would have enjoyed the casual atmosphere.

As evening approached, we decided to explore Cusco's craft beer scene. Cholos Craft Beers Cusco was our destination, a small brewpub known for its wide selection of local beers. I sampled a quinoa kolsh, which was surprisingly refreshing. It was a cozy place, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the other travelers, sharing stories and recommendations. I learned that Cholos offers about 20 rotating choices from breweries across Peru. Maximilian would have loved to have been there! I made sure to take some photos to show him.

For dinner, we chose Organika Restaurant, drawn in by its commitment to organic ingredients. The space was split into three levels, which created a cozy and private atmosphere. I opted for the quinotto, a quinoa risotto with vegetables and Andean cheese. The flavors were vibrant and fresh, a testament to the quality of the ingredients. The service was excellent, and the staff were passionate about the restaurant's ethos. I even saw some edible flowers on top of some dishes!

As I reflect on today's adventures, I feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Cusco's rich history and culture. These ancient sites are more than just stones and carvings; they are portals to another time, another way of seeing the world. They remind me of the importance of connecting with nature, honoring our ancestors, and seeking balance in our lives.

Tomorrow, we're planning an early start to visit Huayna Picchu. I’ve heard the views are incredible, and I’m excited to see Machu Picchu from a different perspective. I'm also looking forward to trying El Jardin - Healthy Food And Coffee for breakfast. It’s supposed to be a great spot for a healthy start to the day.

And as the day winds down, I am reminded how lucky I am to share these experiences with my friends. I am also reminded of my family back in Heidelberg. I miss Maximilian and Sofia dearly, but I know that this journey is enriching me in ways that I can't yet fully understand. I can't wait to share my stories and photos with them when I return, inspiring them to explore the world and discover its hidden treasures.

In the meantime, I'll continue to embrace the present moment, soaking in the beauty and wonder of Cusco.

The city of Cusco certainly holds centuries of history in its streets. I’m glad I can experience it and relay the experience to you all.
