Today was a day of pure immersion in the Finnish wilderness, a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Heidelberg. Leaving the comfort of Ski-Inn RukaVillage behind, we ventured into the heart of Ruka-Kuusamo, ready to embrace the rugged beauty of Oulanka National Park. It was a day filled with hiking, rushing water, and the kind of serene silence that only nature can provide.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at RukaTonttu. Fueling up with some traditional Finnish fare, I knew we needed a solid base for the day ahead, especially with the Pieni Karhunkierros Circle Trail calling our name. Sofia was especially excited, her little boots practically itching to hit the trail. Maximilian, ever the pragmatist, double-checked our gear, ensuring we had everything we needed for a day of hiking in the crisp October air.

The Pieni Karhunkierros Circle Trail, a 12-kilometer loop, promised a taste of everything Oulanka National Park had to offer. As we set off, the trail wound its way through dense forests, the trees ablaze with autumn colors. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. Sofia, ever the curious explorer, peppered us with questions about the different types of trees and the little critters we spotted along the way.

The trail was well-marked, making it easy to navigate, even with a somewhat distracted seven-year-old in tow. We crossed our first suspension bridge, a swaying structure that offered breathtaking views of the Kitkajoki River below. The water rushed beneath us, a churning torrent of white water, hinting at the powerful forces at play in this landscape.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

As we continued our hike, the landscape became more dramatic. We ascended rocky cliffs, the trail winding its way along the edge of deep canyons. The views were simply stunning, a panorama of forests, rivers, and rugged terrain stretching as far as the eye could see. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale and beauty of the Finnish wilderness.

One of the highlights of the Pieni Karhunkierros Trail was undoubtedly Jyrävä Rapids. After a descent, we reached the viewing platform, where we were greeted by the sight and sound of the falls. The water cascaded down the rocks with tremendous force, creating a thunderous roar that echoed through the forest. It was a truly awe-inspiring spectacle, a reminder of the raw power of nature. We took some time to simply stand and admire the view, soaking in the energy of the falls. I told Sofia about the folklore surrounding the rapids, tales of ancient spirits and the magic hidden within the Finnish wilderness, stories my own grandmother had shared with me when I was a girl in Savonlinna. She listened with wide eyes, completely captivated.

Lunch was a delightful interlude at the Wild Food Restaurant Rukan Kuksa. The restaurant lived up to its name, offering a menu filled with locally sourced, wild ingredients. I opted for the sautéed reindeer, a traditional Finnish dish that was both hearty and delicious. Maximilian, ever the adventurous eater, tried the grilled local rainbow trout, while Sofia happily devoured a plate of fried vendace, a small freshwater fish. The meal was a true celebration of Finnish cuisine, a delicious and authentic taste of the region.

After lunch, we made a brief stop at Bar IHKU Ruka, a lively spot known for its karaoke and vibrant atmosphere. While we didn't stay long, it was fun to soak in the energy of the place and imagine what it would be like to spend an evening there, belting out Finnish pop songs with the locals. Perhaps another time, when Sofia is a bit older!

Our day concluded with dinner at Restaurant Tapio. This Michelin-starred establishment offered a refined dining experience, showcasing the best of modern Nordic cuisine. The menu was a work of art, each dish carefully crafted with local, seasonal ingredients. I savored every bite, appreciating the skill and creativity of the chefs. Maximilian, a self-proclaimed foodie, was in heaven, analyzing each flavor and texture with the precision of a seasoned critic. Sofia, surprisingly, was also impressed, declaring the experience very fancy!

As we walked back to our accommodation at Ski-Inn RukaVillage, the stars began to emerge, twinkling in the clear night sky. The air was crisp and cold, carrying the scent of wood smoke from nearby fireplaces. I felt a deep sense of contentment, a feeling of being truly connected to this place. Today had been a day of adventure, exploration, and immersion in the natural beauty of Ruka-Kuusamo. It was a day that reminded me of the importance of disconnecting from the everyday and reconnecting with the wild heart of Finland.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Kiutaköngäs rapids and the Hannu Hautala Nature Photography Center. I am excited to see what wonders await us then!

And, as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to share my Finnish heritage with my family, to introduce them to the landscapes and traditions that have shaped who I am. It was a journey of discovery, not just for them, but for me as well. As much as I love my life in Heidelberg, there's always a part of me that longs for the Finnish wilderness, for the peace and quiet of the forests, for the sound of rushing water, and for the warmth of the sauna after a long day of exploring. This trip is a reminder of where I come from, of the values and traditions that are so deeply ingrained in my soul. And I couldn't be happier to share it all with my family.
