Art and Ascent: Discovering Assisi's Heights
Today in Assisi was a journey for the soul as much as it was for the eyes. With Astrid and Lasse by my side, I set out to explore the art, history, and natural beauty that this remarkable town holds. It was a day of ascents, both literal and metaphorical, as we climbed through museums and up Mount Subasio, each step revealing a new facet of Assisi's charm.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ghiotto Ristorante - Assisi. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our explorations. I opted for a simple but satisfying pastry, while Astrid enjoyed a cappuccino and Lasse devoured a plate of scrambled eggs. Fuelled up, we were ready to immerse ourselves in Assisi's cultural offerings.
First on our list was the Museo di San Pietro e cripta di San Vittorino. This museum, nestled within the ancient Benedictine abbey complex of San Pietro, offered a fascinating glimpse into Assisi's religious history. As we wandered through the halls, we were struck by the collection of contemporary art inspired by St. Francis and the Nativity, including pieces by Dalí, Sassu, and Funi. The highlight for me was the crypt of San Vittorino, the 3rd-century bishop of Assisi, a truly serene and humbling space. Lasse, surprisingly engaged, was captivated by the story of San Vittorino and the well of martyrs.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next, we made our way to the Pinacoteca Comunale Palazzo Vallemani. This art gallery, housed in a stunning Baroque palace, showcases a remarkable collection of medieval and Renaissance frescoes and paintings. As a restorer of antique furniture, I was particularly drawn to the intricate details and craftsmanship of the pieces. Astrid, with her librarian's eye, appreciated the historical context and the stories behind each artwork. Lasse, though initially less enthusiastic, found himself intrigued by the 13th-century fresco fragments from the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, especially the depiction of knights on horseback. The building itself is a piece of art, with vaulted ceilings frescoed in the early 17th century.

After a morning of art and history, our appetites were calling, so we headed to Il Baccanale for lunch. This restaurant, with its inviting atmosphere and delicious Italian cuisine, was the perfect spot to refuel. Astrid and I shared a porchetta, while Lasse, ever the carnivore, devoured a plate of tagliatelle. The service was friendly and attentive, and the food was simply divine.

With our bellies full, we embarked on the afternoon's main adventure: a hike up Mount Subasio. As we drove towards the mountain, the landscape transformed from the charming streets of Assisi to rolling hills and lush greenery. The air grew crisper, carrying the scent of wildflowers and pine.
We chose a trail that promised panoramic views and a moderate challenge, mindful of the family's varying fitness levels. The ascent was invigorating, and as we climbed higher, the views became increasingly spectacular. Looking back, we could see Assisi nestled in the valley below, its pink stone buildings gleaming in the afternoon sun.
The trails of Mount Subasio have a rich history, once serving as vital routes for farmers and herders. Today, they offer a sanctuary for those seeking respite in nature. As we hiked, we passed through meadows dotted with wildflowers and forests of oak and beech. The silence was broken only by the sound of birdsong and the rustling of leaves.
Reaching a scenic viewpoint, we paused to take in the breathtaking vista. The entire Umbrian valley stretched before us, a patchwork of fields, vineyards, and olive groves. In the distance, we could see the Apennine mountains, their peaks still capped with snow. It was a moment of profound peace and connection with nature, a reminder of the simple beauty that surrounds us.
Lasse, surprisingly, was in high spirits, his teenage energy finding an outlet in the physical challenge of the hike. Astrid, ever the nature lover, was in her element, identifying various plants and birds along the way. As for me, I felt a sense of contentment, a feeling of being grounded in the present moment.
Descending from Mount Subasio, we returned to Assisi, our bodies tired but our spirits refreshed. Before heading back to the hotel, we stopped at D'Olivo, a local shop specializing in olive oil. Umbria is known for its excellent olive oil, and I wanted to bring home a taste of the region. We sampled several varieties, each with its unique flavor profile. I purchased a bottle of Colleruita Dop Umbria Colli Assisi-Spoleto extra virgin olive oil, a blend of Moraiolo, Frantoio, and Leccino olives. I plan to use it to recreate some of the delicious dishes we've enjoyed here in Assisi, adding a touch of Umbria to our meals back in Silkeborg.

Our final meal of the day was at Ristorante Bar San Francesco. Located near the Basilica of St. Francis, this restaurant offered a stunning view of the basilica. We enjoyed a simple yet satisfying dinner of pasta and local wine, savoring the last moments of our day in Assisi. I had the pleasure to try the spaghetti all Buca, and I must admit it was delicious.

As we walked back to Hotel Il Duomo, the streets of Assisi were quiet and peaceful. The town was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights, creating a magical atmosphere. Reflecting on the day, I felt grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family. Assisi had captivated us with its art, history, and natural beauty, leaving us with memories that we will cherish for years to come.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Chiesa di San Pietro, La Volta Pinta, and the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli. I am looking forward to discovering more of Assisi's hidden gems and sharing those experiences with you all.
And, who knows, maybe we'll find a cozy wine bar like Vino Osteria Winebar to relax in the evening!
