A Day of Roman Wonders
Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of ancient Rome and savoring the modern culinary delights the city has to offer. From exploring the ruins of emperors to indulging in world-class cuisine, it was a day that truly captured the essence of Rome.
Our Sunday began with a hearty breakfast at Pasticceria Boccione, a local favorite known for its traditional Roman pastries. Fuelled up, we set off to explore Palatine Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome and steeped in history and mythology. As a history enthusiast, I was eager to walk in the footsteps of emperors and uncover the secrets of Rome's past.
To walk through Rome is to walk through centuries of history, art, and culture, all intertwined in a beautiful tapestry of human achievement.Palatine Hill is considered the oldest part of Rome, where Romulus is said to have founded the city in 753 BC. It was fascinating to imagine what life was like here thousands of years ago. We wandered through the ruins of ancient palaces and temples, imagining the lives of emperors like Augustus, Tiberius, and Domitian who once called this place home. Oliver was particularly captivated by the myth of Romulus and Remus, the twins raised by a she-wolf who went on to found Rome.
Emily and I enjoyed panoramic views of the Roman Forum and Circus Maximus from the hilltop. It was easy to see why the Roman elite chose this location for their residences, with its commanding views and strategic importance. The hill had been inhabited since 1000 BC, and during the Republican period, it became a residential colony for the Roman aristocracy. I could almost picture Cicero and other famous figures strolling through their gardens, discussing politics and philosophy.

Next, we ventured to the Baths of Caracalla, another impressive example of ancient Roman architecture and engineering. These public baths were built in the 3rd century AD and were among the largest in the Roman Empire. It was amazing to think that these baths could accommodate up to 8,000 visitors daily, offering a variety of bathing options, libraries, gardens, and gymnasiums.
The Baths of Caracalla were more than just a place to get clean; they were social hubs where Romans gathered to relax, exercise, and socialize. The complex included hot, tepid, and cold baths, as well as swimming pools and other amenities. Emily, ever the marine biologist, was fascinated by the intricate mosaics and sculptures that adorned the interior, depicting scenes of marine life and mythology. Oliver enjoyed running around the ruins, pretending to be a Roman emperor.

After immersing ourselves in ancient history, it was time to experience modern Roman culture at the Testaccio Market. This vibrant market is a feast for the senses, offering a wide array of local produce, street food, and artisanal products. We strolled through the market, sampling various delicacies and soaking in the lively atmosphere.
One of our first stops was Mordi e Vai, a popular stall known for its panini stuffed with traditional Roman dishes like trippa alla Romana and picchiapò. I opted for the classic trippa sandwich, while Emily tried the picchiapò. Oliver, being a bit less adventurous, chose a simple pizza al taglio from Casa Manco. We also picked up some fresh pecorino romano cheese, olives, and seasonal produce to enjoy later.
The Testaccio Market is a true reflection of Roman culture, where locals gather to shop, eat, and socialize. It's a place where you can find everything from fresh produce to artisanal pasta, and where the aromas of freshly baked bread and simmering sauces fill the air. We felt like we were experiencing the real Rome, away from the tourist crowds and closer to the heart of the city.

As the sun began to set, we prepared for a truly special dining experience at La Pergola, Rome's only three-Michelin-starred restaurant. Located atop the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria, La Pergola offers breathtaking views of the city along with its exquisite cuisine.
The restaurant's elegant ambiance and impeccable service set the stage for an unforgettable evening. Chef Heinz Beck's innovative and artistic approach to Italian cuisine was evident in every dish. We opted for the tasting menu, which featured a series of culinary masterpieces that showcased the best of seasonal ingredients and traditional flavors.
From the delicate lobster with cherries marinated in vervain to the signature fagotelli pasta filled with carbonara, each dish was a work of art. The wine list was equally impressive, with over 65,000 bottles to choose from. Our sommelier expertly paired each course with the perfect wine, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Dining at La Pergola was a truly exceptional experience, a celebration of Italian gastronomy and Roman elegance. As we savored each dish and admired the panoramic views of the city, we felt grateful for the opportunity to experience such culinary excellence. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with history, culture, and delicious food.
