Roman Holiday, Day 3: Gods, Rivers, and Wishes
Another day, another adventure in the Eternal City! Today was all about soaking in the heart of Rome, from marveling at ancient architecture to tossing coins into legendary fountains. Oliver was especially excited, armed with his Arsenal jersey and a thirst for gelato. Emily, ever the marine biologist, was fascinated by the intricate water systems of the fountains. And me? Well, I was just trying to keep up, camera in hand, ready to capture every moment of our Roman holiday.
Our day began, as most do here, with a hearty breakfast at 433. Fuelled up, we set off to our first stop: the Pantheon. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. The oculus, a massive opening in the dome, let in a beam of sunlight that danced across the ancient marble floor. It felt like standing in the presence of history itself.

The Pantheon, initially built by Agrippa as a temple to all Roman gods between 25 and 27 BC, was rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian between 118 and 125 AD. It stands as one of the best-preserved ancient Roman buildings. As a historical reenactor, I couldn't help but imagine the rituals and ceremonies that once took place within those walls. Oliver, of course, was more interested in the pigeons fluttering about near the entrance.
Sometimes, the best way to understand history is to simply stand in its presence.
Next, we strolled over to Piazza Navona, a vibrant square teeming with life. The square is built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian, retaining its elongated shape. Street artists were sketching portraits, tourists were snapping photos, and the air was filled with the joyful sounds of a city embracing its past. The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, with its impressive obelisk and statues representing the Nile, Ganges, Danube, and Plate rivers, was a sight to behold.

Emily pointed out the architectural details, while Oliver was captivated by the street performers. According to legend, the Nile figure is shielding his eyes to avoid looking at the Chiesa di Sant'Agnese in Agone, designed by Bernini's rival Borromini; however, Bernini completed his fountain before Borromini began work on the church. I tried to explain the rivalry between Bernini and Borromini, but Oliver was more interested in chasing a rogue bubble floating through the air. Piazza Navona has been the heart of Rome for centuries. In the 15th century, the square was transformed into a marketplace, and later, in the 17th century, Pope Innocent X revitalized the area with Baroque architecture.
Lunch was at Roscioli Salumeria con Cucina, a recommendation from my sister. And what a recommendation it was! The place was bustling, but we managed to snag a table and ordered their famous cacio e pepe and amatriciana. The pasta was cooked to perfection, the sauces rich and flavorful. Emily, who usually opts for lighter fare, couldn't get enough of the cacio e pepe. Oliver, predictably, devoured his pasta in record time and asked for more bread. It was the perfect midday refuel before our next adventure.

With our bellies full, we made our way to the Trevi Fountain. The crowds were thick, but the fountain was even more magnificent in person. The Baroque sculptures, the cascading water, the sheer spectacle of it all – it was breathtaking. The Trevi Fountain marks the intersection of three major Roman roads and was the terminus of the Acqua Vergine, an ancient aqueduct.

Of course, we had to partake in the tradition of tossing a coin into the fountain. I made sure Oliver used his right hand and threw it over his left shoulder. One coin to ensure our return to Rome, as the legend goes. Emily tossed in a coin for good measure, and even Oliver got in on the action, though his coin barely made it over his head. According to legend, tossing a coin into the Trevi guarantees a return to Rome, finding love, or marriage.
After our visit to the Trevi Fountain, Emily suggested we do some shopping. So, we headed to RINASCENTE Rome Via del Tritone. This department store is huge, with multiple floors of luxury brands. Emily was in her element, browsing through the latest fashions. Oliver, however, was less than thrilled. We managed to find him a new Arsenal t-shirt to keep him happy. I was impressed to see remains from the 1st century BC on display inside the store.

Dinner was at Antico Arco, located on Janiculum Hill. The restaurant is known for its modern take on traditional Italian dishes, using seasonal ingredients. The restaurant has a wine cellar located in the catacombs of San Pancrazio. We started with eggplant parmigiana and pistachio-crusted pigeon breast. For the main course, Emily had rockfish and sea bass ravioli, while I opted for veal tenderloin. Oliver, surprisingly, chose spaghetti amatriciana. The food was exquisite, the service impeccable. It was the perfect end to a whirlwind day.

Tomorrow, we're off to Galleria Borghese and Villa Borghese. I’m particularly excited to see the art collection, and Oliver is already looking forward to running around the gardens. Emily is excited about visiting Stravinskij Bar in the evening.
As I sit here, reflecting on our day, I'm struck by the sheer abundance of beauty and history that Rome has to offer. It's a city that captivates the senses, challenges the mind, and nourishes the soul. And I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Until then, *ciao* from the Eternal City!
