A City Steeped in Stories

Today marked the beginning of our Leipzig adventure, and what a start it was! Arriving with my friends, the excitement was palpable as we dove headfirst into the city's rich tapestry of history and culture. From monumental landmarks to hallowed musical grounds, Leipzig has already proven to be a treasure trove of experiences. This first day has set the bar incredibly high for the rest of our trip, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds as we explore even more of what Leipzig has to offer.

Our day began, as all good days should, with a hearty breakfast at Ratskeller der Stadt Leipzig GmbH. The traditional German fare set us up perfectly for a day of exploring. I opted for a classic Saxon breakfast, complete with sausages, bread, and local cheeses. It was the perfect fuel for the adventures ahead.

First on our list was the imposing Monument to the Battle of the Nations. As a historical reenactor, this was a must-see for me. Standing at the base of this colossal structure, you can't help but feel the weight of history. The monument commemorates the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, a pivotal clash in the Napoleonic Wars. The sheer scale of the monument is breathtaking; it's one of the largest monuments in Europe, standing 91 meters tall. We decided to climb to the top, all 364 steps of them! The ascent was a bit of a workout, but the panoramic view of Leipzig and its surroundings was more than worth the effort. From up there, you could see the entire city spread out before you, a living map of history and culture. We also explored the FORUM 1813 museum at the base of the monument, which provided fascinating insights into the battle itself, with displays of weapons, uniforms, and personal stories from the time.

History is not a burden on our memory but an illumination of our souls.

Next, we made our way to St. Thomas Church, a place of immense significance in the world of music. This is where Johann Sebastian Bach served as the Thomaskantor for 27 years. As a lover of classical music, walking through the doors of this church felt like stepping into a sacred space. The church itself is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture, with soaring arches and intricate details. Inside, we paid our respects at Bach's final resting place, a simple stone slab marking his grave. It was a humbling experience to stand there, reflecting on the incredible legacy of this musical genius. We were fortunate enough to catch a short organ recital, and the sound of the music filling the church was simply sublime.

Just a short walk from St. Thomas Church is the Bach Museum, our next stop. This museum is a treasure trove of information about Bach's life and works. The exhibits are interactive and engaging, bringing his music to life in new and exciting ways. I particularly enjoyed the exhibit where you could try your hand at dating Bach manuscripts – a surprisingly challenging task! The museum also houses a collection of original Bach manuscripts and artifacts, including an organ console that Bach himself played. As someone who dabbles in brewing back home, I found it fascinating that the museum is housed in the former residence of Georg Heinrich Bose, a close friend of Bach and a wealthy merchant. The exhibits also showcased the musical talents of Bach's sons, highlighting the family's significant contributions to music.

For lunch, we decided to immerse ourselves in even more history with a meal at Auerbachs Keller, one of the oldest restaurants in Leipzig. This place is steeped in legend, thanks to its mention in Goethe's Faust. The atmosphere is incredible, with vaulted ceilings, barrel paintings, and a sense of stepping back in time. I opted for a traditional Saxon dish, and it was absolutely delicious. The restaurant is divided into several rooms, each with its own unique character. It felt like dining in a living museum, surrounded by centuries of history.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Bayerischer Bahnhof for dinner. This restaurant is located in a former railway station and is known for its traditional Bavarian cuisine and its own brewery. We enjoyed hearty German fare, washed down with locally brewed beer. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of exploring. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, and we enjoyed chatting with locals and fellow travelers.

To cap off our first day, we ventured into the Mädler Passage to visit the Mephisto Bar. This stylish bar is named after Goethe's character and is known for its extravagant cocktails and unique atmosphere. The bar is located just above Auerbachs Keller, adding to the literary connection. The ambiance was perfect for a nightcap, with plush velvet seating, mirrored walls, and a touch of theatrical flair. We enjoyed some expertly crafted cocktails and soaked in the vibrant atmosphere before heading back to the Capri by Fraser Leipzig for a well-deserved rest.

It's interesting to note that today, July 5th, Leipzig is hosting the Bulldog-Dampf & Diesel event at the Agra Messepark, and the Kultur Zirkus in Wilhelm-Külz-Park. While we didn't have time to visit these events today, it's great to see the city buzzing with activity and offering so much to see and do.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we have a jam-packed itinerary planned. We'll be starting our day with breakfast at Palazzo ZIHNØ Restaurant & bar, before heading to the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig, Altes Rathaus to delve deeper into the city's history. We'll also be visiting the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts and the Leipzig Panometer, promising a day filled with art and culture. And of course, we'll be making time for some retail therapy at Elbenwald, a shop that I'm particularly excited about.

As I reflect on our first day in Leipzig, I'm filled with a sense of awe and excitement. This city is a living testament to history, culture, and the enduring power of the human spirit. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, as we continue our exploration of this fascinating city with my friends by my side.

Until then, auf wiedersehen!
