A Taste of Darjeeling's Delights

As our Darjeeling adventure nears its end, today was all about savoring the local flavors and soaking in the ambiance of this charming hill station. With just one day left, we wanted to make the most of every moment, indulging in the culinary experiences that Darjeeling had to offer. It was a day of delightful discoveries and familiar comforts, a perfect blend to bid adieu to this enchanting place.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hotel Lunnar (Pure Veg.). I must admit, being a vegetarian in a new place can sometimes be challenging, but Hotel Lunnar was a delightful surprise. The hotel is conveniently located near the mall road and major attractions. The reviews I had read beforehand praised their delicious vegetarian food and cozy atmosphere. We were not disappointed. The aroma of freshly made parathas and the warmth of masala chai filled the air as we settled into our seats. Leela, surprisingly, devoured her aloo paratha, declaring it the best she'd ever had. Thomas, ever the adventurous one, tried the puri bhaji and gave it a thumbs up. I opted for the classic upma, a comforting South Indian dish that reminded me of home. It was the perfect start to our day, fueling us for the explorations ahead. It was a great start to the day, and the food was delicious.

After breakfast, we decided to take a leisurely stroll through the town. The weather in Darjeeling in September is generally comfortable, with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 23.2°C. However, there is a chance of rain. We were lucky to have a relatively dry morning, with just a slight drizzle that added to the town's mystical charm. We wandered through the bustling streets, soaking in the sights and sounds of daily life. The vibrant colors of the local market, the scent of spices wafting from the food stalls, and the cheerful chatter of the locals created a sensory feast that was truly captivating. I picked up a few souvenirs for friends back in Heidelberg – some Darjeeling tea, of course, and a beautiful handwoven scarf.

For lunch, we ventured to Dafey Munal Restro Cum Bar, a local eatery known for its variety of Indian, Chinese, and Tibetan dishes. The restaurant has mixed reviews with some saying the food is not tasty. Nestled behind rows of taxis on Ladenla Road, it offered a cozy ambiance and a diverse menu that catered to all our cravings. Leela was thrilled to find her favorite – chicken momos – which she declared were very tasty. Thomas opted for the thukpa, a hearty noodle soup that warmed him from the inside out. I decided to try the egg fried rice, which was flavorful and satisfying. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable, making it a great value for money. It was a simple yet fulfilling meal that gave us a taste of the local flavors.

Sometimes, the best way to experience a place is through its food, allowing each bite to tell a story of culture, tradition, and the warmth of its people.

In the late afternoon, we decided to visit Glenary's—Bakery, Restaurant & Pub, a Darjeeling landmark that has been around for over a century. This place has all my heart, and is a must go. The bakery is famed for its baked goods, tea, and cakes. Glenary's is located near the Clock Tower. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by the aroma of freshly baked bread and the sight of delectable pastries. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with a touch of old-world charm. We ordered a selection of treats – chocolate pastries, rum balls, and, of course, a pot of Darjeeling tea. As we sat by the window, gazing at the panoramic views of the mountains, we savored each bite, feeling grateful for the simple pleasures in life.

As evening approached, we decided to explore Glenary's pub. The restaurant divides into sections; the bakery and cafe are on the ground floor, the Buzz Bar is in the basement, and the main restaurant and bar are on the first floor. The pub had a lively atmosphere. We settled into a cozy corner, ordered some drinks, and listened to live music. Leela, of course, was not allowed in the bar area, so Thomas and I took turns entertaining her outside. It was a fun and relaxing way to end our day, soaking in the vibrant energy of Darjeeling's nightlife.

For our final dinner in Darjeeling, we chose Nawangs Restaurant, known for its quality food and warm atmosphere. The restaurant is located in the heart of Darjeeling Bazar. The interior of the restaurant is elegantly designed to provide a cozy and refined ambiance. I had read about it in several reviews and was eager to try their Tibetan cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with warm lighting and traditional decor. We ordered a variety of dishes – momos, thukpa, and some local specialties that the waiter recommended. Each dish was bursting with flavor, showcasing the unique culinary heritage of the region. It was a memorable meal that left us feeling satisfied and content.
