Uji: A Journey Through Time and Tea

Today, on the ninth day of my solo adventure in Japan, I ventured beyond the bustling streets of Kyoto to the tranquil town of Uji. It was a day filled with historical wonders, scenic beauty, and, of course, the exquisite taste of Uji's renowned matcha. As I reflect on the day, I'm filled with a sense of peace and contentment, eager to share my experiences with you.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Alice On Wednesday, a charming spot I chose more for its whimsical name than any prior knowledge. Perhaps it was a subconscious nod to Astrid, who loves the classic story. The cafe was indeed a fairytale, and fueled up, I set off to the train station. I boarded a train on the Nara Line and enjoyed a short ride, watching Kyoto's urban landscape gradually transform into the rolling hills and tea fields of Uji.

Upon arriving in Uji, the crisp February air greeted me. Though the plum blossoms are starting to appear around Kyoto, Uji felt a bit colder, perhaps due to its proximity to the river. My first destination was Byodoin Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a true architectural marvel. As I approached, the iconic Phoenix Hall shimmered in the morning light, its reflection dancing on the surface of the pond. It felt like stepping into a postcard, the scene so perfect it almost seemed unreal.

The history of Byodoin is fascinating. Originally built as a countryside villa in 998, it was later converted into a temple in 1052 by Fujiwara no Yorimichi. The Phoenix Hall, constructed in 1053, is the only remaining original building, a testament to the craftsmanship of the Heian Period. I joined a short guided tour of the hall's interior, admiring the statue of the Amida Buddha and learning about the temple's significance in Pure Land Buddhism.

The beauty of Byodoin lies not only in its architectural splendor but also in its harmonious integration with the surrounding landscape, creating a serene and contemplative space.

After exploring the Phoenix Hall, I visited the Hoshokan Museum, constructed mostly underground so it wouldn't detract from the beauty of the Phoenix Hall. It houses an impressive collection of the temple's treasures, including national treasures and important cultural properties. The multilingual displays provided valuable insights into Byodoin's history and construction.

Leaving Byodoin, I strolled towards Uji Bridge, another iconic landmark of the town. Spanning the Uji River, this bridge has a history stretching back to 646, making it one of the oldest bridges in Japan. It has been rebuilt many times over the centuries, but the current structure, completed in 1996, retains the traditional design, with elements of Japanese cypress and bronze detailing.

As I walked across the bridge, I paused to admire the views of the Uji River, its waters flowing gently towards the horizon. I imagined the countless travelers who had crossed this bridge over the centuries, from ancient monks to feudal lords to modern-day tourists like myself. Uji Bridge is not only a vital transportation link but also a symbol of Uji's rich history and cultural heritage. Legend has it that the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi drew water from the river here for a tea ceremony, something that is commemorated each year at the Uji-cha tea festival.

Uji is famed as the setting for the final ten chapters of *The Tale of Genji*, considered to be the world's first novel, written in the 11th century. There's even a statue of Murasaki Shikibu, the author, at the west end of the bridge. I made sure to take a photo, feeling a connection to the literary history of the town.

After my historical explorations, it was time to indulge in Uji's other claim to fame: matcha. I headed to Kyoto Yaoichi Honkan, a local favorite known for its high-quality produce and prepared foods. While I didn't buy groceries, I couldn't resist sampling some of their matcha sweets. The shop itself was an experience, greeting me with the scent of baked pastries. I opted for a matcha ice cream parfait, savoring the creamy, slightly bitter flavor of the green tea. It was the perfect treat to warm me up on a chilly day.

For lunch, I decided on Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi. It was quite a trip back to Kyoto for lunch, but I figured I would appreciate the break. The restaurant had a retro atmosphere, and felt luxurious, despite being relatively affordable. I treated myself to a steak, and it was one of the best I've ever had.

Back in Uji, I was determined to experience a traditional tea ceremony. I found a tea room and settled in for a calming ceremony. The tea was expertly prepared, and I savored the warmth of the cup as I learned about the history and traditions of the tea ceremony. It was a meditative experience, a chance to slow down and appreciate the simple beauty of the moment.

As evening approached, I made my way to ryu no hige for dinner. This restaurant is known for blending Kyoto cuisine with French techniques, which sounded like a perfect way to end my day. The restaurant has relocated to the first floor of the Daiwa Roynet Hotel Kyoto Shijo Karasuma. I opted for one of their unique courses, enjoying the playful French twist on traditional Kyoto dishes. It was a culinary adventure, a fitting culmination to a day of exploration and discovery.

Before heading back to The Screen Hotel, I did a bit of shopping for gifts. I knew Astrid would appreciate some Uji matcha sweets, so I picked up a selection of treats from a local shop. I also found a beautiful tea set for Maximilian, knowing he would appreciate the craftsmanship and artistry of Japanese ceramics. I was happy to support the local economy, and I knew my family would enjoy the taste of Uji long after I returned home.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Shimogamo Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine, two more of Kyoto's many cultural treasures. I'm also hoping to check out Turquoise Bar in the evening, a change of pace from the temples and gardens.

As I sit here in my hotel room, reflecting on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and serenity of Uji. It was a day of historical discoveries, culinary delights, and moments of quiet contemplation. Uji is a place that nourishes the soul, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. I'm so glad I took the time to venture beyond Kyoto and explore this hidden gem.

I think I'll try to get some sleep now. Oyasumi nasai!
