Whispers of the Past, Tastes of the Present

Today in Kyoto was a beautiful blend of the old and the new, a dance between serene temples and vibrant modern life. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling solo—the freedom to wander, to discover, and to simply be present in the moment, soaking in the atmosphere of this incredible city.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Fujiya. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and an assortment of pickled vegetables. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of temple exploration. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and it was clear that locals enjoyed starting their day there as well.

My first stop was Nanzen-ji, a Zen Buddhist temple with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. The sheer scale of the Sanmon gate was breathtaking. I paid the small fee to climb to the top, and the panoramic view of Kyoto was worth every yen. The temple grounds were expansive, with various sub-temples and gardens to explore. I wandered through the meticulously raked rock gardens, feeling a sense of calm wash over me.

One of the most striking features of Nanzen-ji was the brick aqueduct that cut through the temple grounds. It was built during the Meiji period to carry water from Lake Biwa, and it created a fascinating juxtaposition of ancient and modern engineering. I learned that Nanzen-ji was originally the retirement villa of Emperor Kameyama, who later converted it into a Zen temple. It's amazing to think about the history that has unfolded within these walls.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its ancient temples, but in its ability to seamlessly blend tradition with modernity.

Next on my itinerary was Eikandō Temple, formally known as Zenrinji Temple, a short walk north of Nanzen-ji. Eikandō is renowned for its autumn colors, but even in late February, the temple had a serene beauty. The temple is dedicated to helping the poor and sick. As I wandered through the temple complex, I came across the unique Amida Buddha statue, its head turned to the side. According to legend, the statue turned its head to look back at the priest Eikan, and said, “Yokan, you are slow.” It’s a reminder to be present and mindful in each moment.

For lunch, I ventured to AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO, a vegan restaurant that had been recommended to me. As someone who tries to incorporate more plant-based meals into my diet, I was excited to see what they had to offer. The restaurant was tucked away on a quiet backstreet, creating a peaceful atmosphere. I decided on the soy cutlet burger, and it was absolutely delicious. The staff was friendly, and the restaurant had a cozy, inviting vibe.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Japan Culture & Character Shop Guf 京都店. This shop was a treasure trove of Japanese pop culture, with everything from anime figurines to traditional crafts. I ended up buying a few small souvenirs for Astrid and Maximilian, knowing they would appreciate the unique finds.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Teppanyaki Minami for dinner. This restaurant offered a unique dining experience, with chefs cooking the food right in front of you on a large iron griddle. I opted for a set menu that included a variety of grilled meats, seafood, and vegetables. It was a feast for the senses, and the chefs were incredibly skilled and entertaining.

The average temperature in Kyoto in February is around 5°C (41°F), so I was glad I had packed my lightweight jacket. The weather was mostly clear, with a gentle breeze. The sun set around 5:30 PM, casting a golden glow over the city.

Reflecting on the day, I'm struck by how much Kyoto has to offer. From the serene temples to the vibrant modern culture, this city is a feast for the senses. I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore it at my own pace, soaking in the atmosphere and discovering hidden gems along the way.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Kodaiji Temple and Maruyama Park, eager to uncover more of Kyoto's hidden beauty. I might even stop by Kyoto Star Bar for a nightcap. Until then, I'll savor the memories of today and dream of the adventures that await.

I am also thinking about the Baikasai (Plum Blossom Festival) at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. If I were here on February 25th, I would have loved to see the geiko and maiko from the Kamishichiken District nearby serve tea in an outdoor tea ceremony. Tickets to this event cost ¥1500. I will make sure to visit it next time!
