Whispers of the Past, Tastes of the Present

Today was a day of deep immersion into the heart of Kyoto, a journey that blended the spiritual with the historical, and the traditional with the modern. It’s days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the magic of travel and the unique stories that each place has to offer.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast, a colorful array of small dishes that were as pleasing to the eye as they were to the palate. The delicate flavors and textures were the perfect start to a day of exploration. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes when I get back to Berlin – Maximilian would love it! The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with friendly staff, and the food was excellent [Masayoshi Japanese Dining Review].

With a satisfied stomach, I made my way to Kiyomizu-dera, one of Kyoto's most celebrated temples. The temple was founded in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall in the wooded hills east of Kyoto, and it derives its name from the fall's waters [Kiyomizu-dera History]. As I approached, the iconic wooden stage jutted out from the main hall, offering a panoramic view of Kyoto. I paused there for a long moment, camera in hand, trying to capture the essence of the city stretched out before me. The air was crisp, and the sky was a brilliant blue – perfect for photography.

The temple complex was bustling with visitors, a mix of locals and tourists, all drawn to the beauty and history of this place. I wandered through the various halls and shrines, admiring the intricate architecture and the serene atmosphere. I even braved the crowds at the Otowa Waterfall, where visitors use cups attached to long poles to drink from the three separate streams, each said to have a different benefit: longevity, success at school, and a fortunate love life. I chose the stream for longevity, hoping for many more years of adventures and stories to share.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples and gardens, but in the way it seamlessly blends the past with the present.

Leaving Kiyomizu-dera, I strolled down Sannenzaka, a charming, stone-paved street lined with traditional shops and restaurants [Sannenzaka Street]. The street was bustling with activity, and I couldn't resist browsing the various shops, filled with local crafts, sweets, and souvenirs. I picked up a few small gifts for Astrid – a set of colorful origami paper and a small, wooden Kokeshi doll. I could imagine her excitement when I get back home and hand them over to her.

Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka are pedestrian shopping streets in the Higashiyama district [Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka Streets]. According to legend, if you fall on Sannenzaka, you will die within three years, so I made sure to watch my step on the stone steps. The area was nominated as a historic preservation district in 1972, which was the first legal preservation of urban regions in Japan [Sannenzaka Architecture].

For lunch, I had made a reservation at Jiki Miyazawa, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its innovative Kyoto cuisine. The restaurant was small and intimate, with only a handful of counter seats, allowing for a close-up view of the chefs at work. I opted for the tasting menu, a series of exquisitely prepared dishes that showcased the best of local, seasonal ingredients. Each course was a work of art, both visually and gastronomically. The flavors were subtle and complex, and the presentation was impeccable. It was an experience that engaged all the senses [Jiki Miyazawa Review].

One of the highlights was the signature dish, Yaki Goma Tofu, made of white sesame. The tofu was rich, creamy, and sweet, and the sesame crumbs were cold and crunchy. I loved the contrast between the hot and cold elements in this dish [Jiki Miyazawa Signature Dish].

After such a delightful lunch, I decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Kyoto LOFT, a multi-story emporium filled with stylish and practical Japanese lifestyle products [Kyoto LOFT Shopping]. I spent a happy hour browsing the shelves, admiring the innovative designs and the meticulous attention to detail. I picked up a few items for myself – a set of beautifully crafted stationery and a sleek, minimalist water bottle. I always appreciate the way the Japanese blend form and function, creating objects that are both beautiful and useful.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO for dinner. This restaurant is located in a former residence of a renowned Japanese painter, Seihou Takeuchi. The building itself was built in 1929 and features a beautiful garden [THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO]. The restaurant offers Italian cuisine with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients from Kyoto. I enjoyed the atmosphere of this restaurant, which was a very lovely luxury space [SODOH HIGASHIYAMA Review].

From the spiritual serenity of Kiyomizu-dera to the bustling streets of Sannenzaka, and the culinary delights of Jiki Miyazawa and THE SODOH, every moment was a feast for the senses. As I head back to The Screen Hotel, I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventure, when I plan to explore the Philosopher's Path and the Heian Shrine. Before I drift off to sleep, I must remember to buy a Japanese phrasebook tomorrow. I also need to get an umbrella, just in case it rains. I knew I forgot something!

Oh, and I saw that there's a Plum Blossom Festival at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine on February 25th. I'll be sure to check that out before I leave Kyoto [Plum Blossom Festival]!

I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
