Kyoto Through the Ages: From Shoguns to Manga
Today was a fascinating dive into the contrasting yet complementary facets of Kyoto. I started with a historical landmark and ended in a world of vibrant illustrations. It's amazing how this city manages to honor its past while embracing modern culture.
My day began with a hearty Japanese breakfast at Kizahashi, located in The Thousand Kyoto hotel where I'm staying. The breakfast set was a delightful array of small dishes, each bursting with flavor. From the delicate dashi-maki tamago (rolled omelet) to the perfectly grilled fish, it was a wonderful start to the day. I especially enjoyed the miso soup, which had a depth of flavor that only comes from long simmering. Fuelled up for the day, I set off to explore Nijō Castle.
Explore Nijo Castle in Kyoto, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and immerse yourself in the history and beauty of Japan's feudal era.
Nijō Castle was truly impressive. The sheer scale of the place is something to behold. As I walked through the Ninomaru Palace, I couldn't help but marvel at the intricate details of the architecture. The 'Nightingale Floors' were particularly fascinating; designed to chirp with every step to alert the occupants of intruders, they added an eerie yet captivating element to the experience. The castle's history is rich and complex, serving as a residence for the Tokugawa shogunate, and walking through the grounds, I felt a tangible connection to Japan's feudal past.
The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.
After immersing myself in history, I decided to indulge my more contemporary interests at the Kyoto International Manga Museum.
Discover the captivating world of manga at Kyoto International Manga Museum, featuring vast collections, exhibitions, and a delightful café.
This place is a paradise for manga lovers. Housed in a former elementary school, the museum is home to a staggering collection of manga from all eras and genres. I spent hours wandering through the endless shelves, discovering new artists and revisiting old favorites. It was fascinating to see the evolution of manga art and storytelling over the decades.
One of the highlights was the 'Wall of Manga,' a towering display of 50,000 books that visitors are free to pick up and read. I found a cozy spot and spent a good hour engrossed in a classic manga series. The museum also has exhibits on the history of manga and its cultural impact, providing a deeper understanding of this unique art form. I even considered getting a caricature drawn in manga style but decided against it in the end. Maybe next time!
For lunch, I ventured out to Khaos Spice Diner, a place recommended for its eclectic curry dishes.

Finding it in the Teramachi shopping arcade was a little adventure in itself! The diner had a quirky, laid-back vibe with film posters adorning the walls and reggae music playing in the background. I opted for the three-curry plate, which allowed me to sample a variety of flavors. The pork keema curry was a standout, rich with toasted spices and a hint of Japanese dashi. It was a flavorful and satisfying meal that provided a welcome break from traditional Japanese cuisine.
As evening approached, I made my way to Gion, Kyoto's geisha district, for dinner at Gion Mikaku.

This restaurant is known for its exquisite wagyu beef dishes, and I was eager to experience it for myself. The restaurant's ambiance was elegant and refined, with a traditional Japanese aesthetic. I opted for the Kobe beef rump steak, cooked to perfection on a hot griddle. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with each bite. It was a truly special dining experience that showcased the best of Japanese cuisine.
To cap off the evening, I decided to check out The Common One Bar Kyoto.
Experience the vibrant nightlife of Kyoto at The Common One Bar, where tradition meets innovation in every cocktail.
This hidden gem is known for its creative cocktails. The bar was tucked away in a quiet alley, and it took me a few minutes to find the entrance. Once inside, I was greeted by a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The bar featured tatami rooms and a tea room, creating a unique blend of tradition and modernity. I ordered a brandy-based cocktail recommended by the bartender, which was expertly crafted and delicious. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with cultural exploration and culinary delights.
Reflecting on the day, I'm struck by Kyoto's ability to seamlessly blend its rich history with its vibrant contemporary culture. From the majestic Nijō Castle to the colorful Manga Museum, there's something here for everyone. And with culinary experiences ranging from traditional Japanese breakfasts to eclectic curry dishes and exquisite wagyu beef, my taste buds were certainly kept entertained. Tomorrow, I plan to venture a bit further afield and explore Byodoin Temple and the Uji Bridge. I also intend to visit Alice on Wednesday for breakfast, Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi for lunch, and ryu no hige for dinner. Before heading back to the hotel, I'll stop at Kyoto Yaoichi Honkan, a local shop. I’m looking forward to seeing what adventures tomorrow brings!
Before drifting off to sleep, I thought about Maximilian and Astrid back in Berlin. I miss them terribly, but I know this solo journey is something I needed to do for myself. I'm already looking forward to sharing my experiences with them when I return, and perhaps even planning a family trip to Japan in the future. For now, though, I'm content to soak up the beauty and culture of Kyoto, one day at a time.
I am also so happy that the weather has been quite mild for February. I remember forgetting my umbrella back in Berlin, but thankfully the weather has been so good that it has not been an issue at all! I am also finding my Japanese phrasebook to be quite useful, although I still have a lot to learn.
Today was a reminder of why I love to travel – the opportunity to immerse myself in new cultures, discover hidden gems, and create lasting memories. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible solo sojourn in Kyoto.
