A Sentimental Send-Off

As our family adventure on Shikoku Island draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. There’s a sense of accomplishment for all that we’ve seen and done, a tinge of sadness that our time here is ending, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the experiences we’ve shared. Today, our final day in Kochi, we set out to soak in a few more cultural and historical gems before preparing for our journey back home.

Our day began with a hearty Japanese breakfast at Hakkenden Nankoku Osone. The restaurant was bustling with locals, always a good sign. I ordered a traditional set meal with grilled fish, miso soup, and an array of pickled vegetables. David opted for the tamagoyaki (rolled omelet), while Thandiwe, ever adventurous, tried the natto (fermented soybeans) – a culinary rite of passage, if you ask me! The staff were incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home as we enjoyed our meal. I couldn't help but think of my mother back in Zimbabwe, and how she would have loved to try all these new and exciting dishes. It’s these small, personal connections that make traveling so meaningful.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we headed to Kochi Station to see the Statues of the Three Tosa Samurai. These statues, depicting Hanpeita Takechi, Ryoma Sakamoto, and Shintaro Nakaoka, stand proudly in the plaza, embodying the spirit of the Tosa domain during the Bakumatsu period. It was a beautiful morning, and the statues looked magnificent against the clear blue sky. Thandiwe was fascinated by their stern expressions and grand attire. I explained their significance in Japan's modernization, and she listened intently, her eyes wide with curiosity. I must admit, I felt a surge of pride seeing her engage with history in such a tangible way.

Travel is more than just seeing sights; it's about creating memories and forging deeper connections with the people you love.

Next on our itinerary was the Shikoku Automobile Museum in Konan. Now, I must confess, I'm not the biggest car enthusiast, but David is, and Thandiwe has inherited his love for all things automotive. The museum is housed in what appears to be an unassuming metal shed, but inside, it's a treasure trove of automotive history. From classic Japanese cars to rally cars and supercars, the collection is eclectic and impressive. David was in his element, pointing out the unique features of each vehicle and sharing anecdotes about their history. Thandiwe, not to be outdone, peppered him with questions, eager to learn everything she could. I particularly enjoyed seeing the DeLorean DMC-12, decked out as a replica from Back to the Future. It brought back so many memories of watching the movie with my cousins back in Gweru.

After immersing ourselves in automotive history, it was time for lunch. We drove to 錆と煤 南国本店, a restaurant recommended for its South Indian curry. The restaurant's name, which translates to Rust and Soot, intrigued me. The interior was just as unique as the name, with colorful décor and an eclectic mix of furniture. We ordered a variety of dishes, including a special plate with rice, vegetables, and papadums. The flavors were bold and complex, a delightful fusion of spices that danced on my palate. Thandiwe, surprisingly, loved the food, even the spicier dishes. David and I exchanged amused glances, marveling at her adventurous taste buds. It reminded me of the vibrant flavors of Zimbabwean cuisine, and I felt a pang of homesickness, a reminder of the tastes I grew up with.

As the afternoon waned, we made our way back to Kochi, stopping for dinner at 野村食堂. This casual eatery offered a comforting end to our culinary explorations, with dishes that felt like a warm hug. With the day winding down, we decided to experience Kochi’s nightlife with a visit to K’s BAR. Nestled in the bustling Obiyamachi district, the bar was known for its inviting atmosphere and exceptional service. The cozy interior, adorned with warm lighting and stylish décor, created the perfect ambiance for a relaxing evening. David and I enjoyed classic cocktails while Thandiwe sipped on a non-alcoholic beverage, feeling very grown-up. The friendly staff made us feel welcome, sharing stories and local tips. It was a lovely way to unwind and savor our last night in Kochi.

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Shikoku Island has captured my heart with its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality. From the serene temples of Takamatsu to the rugged coastline of the Iya Valley, every moment has been a treasure.
