Echoes of Edo in Matsuyama

Today was a day of historical immersion here in Matsuyama, and I couldn't wait to share it with you all. It was a day filled with majestic sights and soothing experiences, truly a feast for the senses. I'm so excited to delve into the heart of Shikoku's captivating heritage.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Ombelico [i]. It's a charming little spot and it set the perfect tone for the adventures that awaited us.

After fuelling up, we made our way to the iconic Matsuyama Castle [i].

Perched atop Mount Katsuyama, Matsuyama Castle is a sight to behold. We decided to take the ropeway up, a gentle ascent that offered stunning panoramic views of the city and the Seto Inland Sea. Thandiwe was absolutely thrilled, her eyes wide with wonder as the landscape unfolded beneath us. David, ever the history buff, was already sharing interesting facts about the castle's construction by Kato Yoshiaki in 1602.

The castle itself is an impressive structure, one of the few remaining original castles in Japan. Exploring the castle grounds felt like stepping back in time. The intricate details of the architecture, the strategic layout of the defenses – it all spoke volumes about the ingenuity and skill of the Edo period. We wandered through the castle keep, taking in the exhibits that offered glimpses into Matsuyama's history and the feudal era. Though the castle tower is not accessible for wheelchair users, we were still able to enjoy much of the grounds. The views from the top were breathtaking, stretching out to the Seto Inland Sea and Mount Ishizuchi in the distance.

In the heart of Matsuyama, history whispers from ancient stones and soothes the soul in rejuvenating waters.

After thoroughly exploring the castle, we descended and made our way to Yuzuan Restaurant for lunch [i].

It was the perfect place to refuel after our morning adventure. The restaurant offered a variety of local dishes, and we opted for some regional specialties. It was delicious and gave us a real taste of the local cuisine.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we headed to the much-anticipated Dogo Onsen [i].

The Dogo Onsen Main Building is an iconic landmark, said to be one of Japan's oldest hot springs. Its majestic wooden structure is steeped in history and legend, and it’s even rumored to have inspired the bathhouse in Studio Ghibli's acclaimed film, *Spirited Away*. The building recently completed a 5.5-year renovation in July 2024, blending historic charm with modern accessibility.

Before heading to the Onsen, we took a stroll around Dogo Onsen town. There are many shops and restaurants, and Thandiwe was particularly taken by the Botchan Karakuri Clock. Every hour, the clock puts on a little show with characters from Natsume Soseki's novel *Botchan*. It was a delightful spectacle that brought a smile to everyone's face.

Finally, it was time to experience the onsen itself. Dogo Onsen Honkan welcomes all visitors regardless of tattoos, so I was able to fully enjoy the experience without worry. We opted for the Kami-no-Yu bath on the first floor, enjoying the therapeutic alkaline waters. Soaking in the warm waters, surrounded by the historic architecture, was an incredibly relaxing experience. It felt like a true immersion into Japanese culture and tradition.

Feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, we decided to try a local bar. We went to Bar Kohno [i].

It was a cozy, intimate space, perfect for unwinding after a busy day. David and I enjoyed some local sake, while Thandiwe sipped on a refreshing juice. It was a lovely way to end the day, soaking in the local atmosphere and reflecting on our adventures.

As we strolled back to our accommodation, the city lights twinkling around us, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Matsuyama had truly captivated us with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Tomorrow, we're off to explore the Iya Valley, including the famous Vine Bridge [i]. I've heard it's a stunning area, and I can't wait to share our adventures with you all. I think we will have breakfast at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop before we leave Matsuyama [i].

But for now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of exploration. Until tomorrow, stay tuned for more tales from our Shikoku adventure!

I'm also thrilled that the Dogo Onsen Honkan welcomes visitors with tattoos, making it a welcoming place for everyone ! Also, it is great to know that they offer accessible parking spaces for those who need them.
