Echoes of the Past in Iya Valley

Today, we embarked on a journey deep into the heart of Shikoku, a place where time seems to stand still and ancient traditions thrive. It was a day of exploration, adventure, and a profound connection to the history and natural beauty of this remarkable island. I felt like an explorer uncovering hidden treasures, each experience more captivating than the last.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop. I always appreciate a good, reliable breakfast spot, especially when traveling with family. It reminds me of the simple pleasures back home in Stratford, where a comforting meal sets the tone for the day. Joyfull offered a diverse menu, ensuring everyone found something to enjoy. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while David enjoyed a Western-style toast and eggs. Thandiwe, of course, went for the pancakes! It's these small moments of normalcy that make our travels feel like home, no matter where we are in the world.

With our bellies full, we set off for the legendary Iya Valley, a remote and mountainous region known for its stunning landscapes and rich history. As we drove deeper into the valley, the scenery transformed dramatically. Lush forests, emerald rivers, and towering peaks surrounded us. It felt like stepping into another world, far removed from the bustling cityscapes we had left behind. The drive itself was an adventure, with winding roads and hairpin turns that offered breathtaking views at every corner. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence for the natural beauty that unfolded before us.

Our first stop in Iya Valley was the famed Vine Bridge, or Iya-no-Kazurabashi, a historic structure made of woven vines suspended high above the Iya River. As I stepped onto the bridge, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation. The bridge swayed gently with each step, and the gaps between the vines offered glimpses of the rushing river below. It was both exhilarating and slightly terrifying!

To walk across the Iya Vine Bridge is to step back in time, connecting with the ingenuity and resilience of those who came before.

I learned that these bridges were originally built by the Heike clan, who sought refuge in the Iya Valley after losing the Genpei War in the 12th century. The vines were chosen strategically, as they could be easily cut in case of enemy pursuit. As I walked across, I imagined the samurai warriors who once traversed this very bridge, their footsteps echoing through the ages. It was a powerful reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage that permeates every corner of Japan.

Thandiwe was initially hesitant to cross the bridge, but with a little encouragement from David and me, she bravely took her first steps. Her eyes widened with wonder as she made her way across, a testament to her adventurous spirit. It's moments like these that make traveling with family so rewarding, witnessing the world through her innocent and curious eyes.

After our thrilling experience on the Vine Bridge, we drove to Eki-mae Shokudo for lunch. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, drawn by its reputation for authentic Japanese cuisine. We savored the flavors of Kochi, enjoying dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The warm ambiance and friendly service made us feel right at home. It reminded me of the small, family-run restaurants in Gweru, where the food is made with love and the atmosphere is always welcoming. I opted for a regional specialty, while David tried a hearty noodle dish. Thandiwe, ever the adventurous eater, surprised us by trying a bit of everything!

In the afternoon, we decided to explore the Minami-Shinmachi Shopping Street in Kochi. It was a vibrant and bustling hub, filled with shops selling everything from local crafts to trendy fashion. I enjoyed browsing the various stores, soaking in the lively atmosphere. Thandiwe was particularly excited by a store selling colorful hair accessories, and she insisted on buying a few to add to her collection. David, ever the practical one, was on the lookout for a new travel guidebook.

As we strolled along the shopping street, I couldn't help but notice the similarities and differences between Japanese and Zimbabwean culture. The emphasis on politeness and respect was something I deeply appreciated, as it resonated with the values I grew up with. However, the fast-paced lifestyle and consumer culture were quite different from the more laid-back and community-oriented way of life in Zimbabwe. It's these observations that make traveling so enriching, allowing me to see the world from different perspectives and gain a deeper understanding of myself and my place in it.

For dinner, we decided to try Osusowake Shokudo Mado, a charming eatery known for its commitment to authentic Japanese flavors. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I learned that “Osusowake” means to share something with others, which perfectly captured the spirit of the restaurant. The owner hopes that the cafeteria would be a window that people could have connection with others. The food was delicious, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of Japan. We enjoyed a variety of classic dishes, including rice bowls, seasonal vegetables, and expertly prepared fish. The use of fresh ingredients sourced from local markets enhanced the flavors of each dish, creating an unforgettable dining experience.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on our adventures in Iya Valley. It was a day filled with history, culture, and natural beauty, a true highlight of our trip to Shikoku. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this remarkable place with my family. It's moments like these that create lasting memories and strengthen the bonds that tie us together.

Tomorrow, we'll be exploring the Ritsurin Garden and Shikoku Village in Takamatsu. I'm excited to discover more of Shikoku's hidden gems and share our experiences with you. Until then, sayonara!

I'm finding that traveling, like life, is about the journey, not just the destination. Each day brings new discoveries, new challenges, and new opportunities for growth. And as I continue to explore the world, I hope to inspire others to embrace the unknown and embark on their own adventures.

I am especially grateful for this journey with my family. It is a great joy to see the world through Thandiwe's eyes, and to share these experiences with David, my constant companion. Together, we are creating memories that will last a lifetime, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
