Saying Goodbye to Shikoku

As my Shikoku adventure draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of emotions. This island has captured my heart with its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and the warmth of its people. Today, my final day, was a fitting farewell, filled with natural beauty and a sense of tranquility that I'll carry with me long after I've left its shores. I am excited to share the highlights of my last day exploring this beautiful island.

My day began with a simple yet satisfying breakfast at Okamura. I savored a traditional Japanese breakfast, fueling up for the day's adventures. I found myself reflecting on all the delicious meals I had during my stay in Shikoku. From the hearty udon to the fresh seafood, each dish told a story of the island's culinary heritage. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes back home in Stratford, bringing a taste of Shikoku to my Canadian kitchen.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off for Tobinosu Canyon. The drive itself was an adventure, with narrow, winding roads that offered glimpses of the lush countryside. As I got closer, the air grew cooler, and I could hear the rushing sound of water, a symphony of nature that beckoned me forward. The roads leading to the canyon were indeed uneven and narrow, but it was all part of the adventure. Driving through the lush greenery, I felt a sense of anticipation building. I was eager to see the canyon and experience its natural beauty firsthand.

When I arrived at Tobinosu Canyon, I was immediately struck by its serene beauty. The canyon, carved by the Shirakawa River, was a sight to behold. The trees obstructed some viewpoints, but from around Tobi no Sudani bridge, the views were breathtaking. The sound of the water flowing through the canyon was so soothing, and I spent some time simply listening to it, letting the sounds of nature wash over me. I imagined what it must be like in autumn when the leaves change color, painting the canyon in vibrant hues. I made a mental note to return someday to witness this spectacle.

The beauty of nature lies not just in its grand vistas, but also in the quiet moments of reflection it inspires.

Leaving Tobinosu Canyon, I continued my journey towards the coast, eager to experience the final stop on my Shikoku itinerary: the Kurushima Strait Observatory. The drive took me through charming coastal towns, each with its own unique character. I couldn't resist stopping at a local market to pick up some souvenirs for David and Thandiwe, little mementos of my trip to Japan. I chose a small, intricately carved wooden toy for Thandiwe and a beautiful sake set for David, hoping they would appreciate these tokens of my adventure.

Arriving at the Kurushima Strait Observatory, I was immediately captivated by the panoramic views. From this vantage point, I could see the Kurushima Strait Bridge, a magnificent feat of engineering that spans the sea. The strait itself was alive with activity, as ships of all sizes navigated the waters below. I spent a long time simply watching the ships go by, imagining the stories of the people on board and the destinations they were heading towards.

The observatory offered more than just stunning views. There was also a store selling local products and an exhibition corner showcasing the technology used to build the bridge. I found myself fascinated by the engineering marvel that the Kurushima Strait Bridge represented. It was a testament to human ingenuity and a symbol of connection, linking the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. As I wandered through the exhibition, I learned about the challenges faced by the engineers who designed and built the bridge, and I gained a newfound appreciation for their skill and dedication.

Before leaving the observatory, I took one last look at the Kurushima Strait, etching the image into my memory. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the water and the surrounding islands. It was a perfect ending to my Shikoku adventure, a moment of serenity and beauty that I would cherish forever.

As evening approached, I made my way to Imabari for my final dinner on Shikoku. I chose Munagin, a restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine. I savored each bite, knowing that it would be my last taste of Shikoku for a while. The meal was a delightful symphony of flavors, a perfect representation of the island's culinary heritage. I left the restaurant feeling content and grateful for the experiences I had had on this incredible island.

To cap off the night, I decided to visit Bar Salvador in Kochi, a cozy spot known for its inviting atmosphere and delightful drinks. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on my journey. I enjoyed a refreshing cocktail, chatting with some of the locals and fellow travelers. The bar had a vibrant atmosphere, and I felt a sense of camaraderie with the other patrons. It was a fitting end to my solo adventure, a chance to connect with others and share stories of our travels.

Tomorrow, I will be heading back to Canada, carrying with me a treasure trove of memories and experiences. Shikoku has left an indelible mark on my soul, and I know that I will return someday to explore its hidden corners and reconnect with its warm and welcoming people. This solo journey has been a reminder of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced it.

I'm already looking forward to sharing my stories with David and Thandiwe, reliving the adventures through their eyes. I know that they will be eager to hear about the temples, the mountains, and the delicious food. And who knows, maybe one day we'll all come back to Shikoku together, creating new memories as a family.

Before I drift off to sleep, I take one last look at the photos I've taken during my trip. Each image tells a story, a reminder of the incredible experiences I've had. From the bustling markets to the serene temples, from the majestic mountains to the tranquil coastlines, Shikoku has revealed its beauty to me, and I am forever grateful. I am so glad that I decided to stay in local guesthouses and ryokans, as it allowed me to truly experience authentic Japanese hospitality and connect more deeply with the culture. I also know that I should have packed my Japanese phrasebook, as it would have been helpful in communicating with the locals.

As I close my eyes, I can still hear the sounds of Shikoku: the gentle lapping of the waves, the rustling of the leaves in the wind, and the laughter of the people I've met along the way. These sounds will stay with me, a constant reminder of the magic of this island and the transformative power of travel. Until next time, Shikoku, arigato gozaimasu. I will miss you.

I'm excited to return home to Stratford, but I'll always cherish the memories I've made on this solo adventure. It's time to start planning my next trip, perhaps somewhere closer to home so that David and Thandiwe can join me. But no matter where I go, I'll always carry a piece of Shikoku in my heart.
