A Day Amongst Ruins and Echoes

Today, I traded the sun-kissed beaches for a journey back in time, exploring the historical heart of Goa. It's amazing how much history is embedded in this land. I was eager to explore the relics of a bygone era. Join me as I uncover the stories etched in stone and whispered through the Goan winds.

Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Bhatti Village Family Bar & Restaurant in Nerul. This place is a gem! Run by a local family, it felt like stepping into someone's home. Priya, Devon and I enjoyed some traditional Goan dishes. The aroma of spices filled the air, and the food was simply divine. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. Priya especially loved the Prawn Curry with Plain Rice, saying it reminded her of her mother's cooking back in India. Devon, of course, was a fan of anything with chicken. The friendly atmosphere made it a memorable start to our day.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore the Viceroy’s Arch. As we approached, the sheer scale of the arch was impressive. The intricate designs and carvings told stories of a time when Goa was a bustling hub of Portuguese influence. I learned that the arch was built by Vasco da Gama's grandson, Viceroy Francisco da Gama. Standing beneath it, I could almost picture the processions and dignitaries that once passed through this very spot. It's a powerful reminder of Goa's colonial past and the fusion of cultures that shaped its identity.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

Next on our itinerary was the St. Augustine Tower. Once part of a grand church complex, now only half of the tower remains, standing tall amidst the ruins. As I gazed at the tower, I couldn't help but imagine the grandeur of the church in its prime. Built by Augustinian friars in the early 17th century, it was once one of the largest churches in Goa. The story goes that the church was abandoned in the 19th century, leading to its eventual collapse. Despite the ruins, the tower still exudes a sense of majesty and serves as a poignant reminder of the passage of time.

Wandering through the ruins, I stumbled upon remnants of chapels, altars, and a convent. It was surreal to think that this was once a thriving religious center. The kids were fascinated by the crumbling walls and the stories I shared about the monks who once lived here. Devon, in particular, was intrigued by the tale of the church bell, which was moved to the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Panjim after the collapse. I could see his imagination running wild as he pictured the bell tolling across the Goan landscape.

After immersing ourselves in history, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Mario Gallery. As a big fan of Mario Miranda's work, I was eager to see his iconic cartoons and illustrations. The gallery was a treasure trove of Goan art, with quirky statues and vibrant artwork adorning the walls. I picked up a few souvenirs, including a set of coasters and a couple of prints, to remind me of our time in Goa. Priya found some beautiful stationary. Devon chose a t-shirt with one of Miranda's classic cartoons, already excited to wear it back in Toronto.

For lunch, we headed to Copperleaf Porvorim, a restaurant known for its Goan and multi-cuisine dishes. The ambiance was amazing, and the food was spectacular. We started with some Fish Tikka, which was tender and flavorful. For the main course, I opted for the Crab Sukka, a local delicacy that was cooked to perfection. Priya chose the Rawa Fried Pomfret, while Devon went for his usual Chicken Red Pepper. The service was excellent, and the staff made us feel right at home. It was the perfect culinary experience.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Thalassa for dinner. This Greek restaurant offers a breathtaking view of the Arabian Sea. The white decor and Mediterranean ambiance transported us to another world. We started with some traditional Greek salads and appetizers, followed by a seafood platter that was simply divine. The kids were entertained by the traditional Greek dancing and plate smashing, which added to the festive atmosphere. As we savored our meal, we watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a magical end to a day filled with history, culture, and culinary delights.

Today also marked the start of the Existance Goa festival and Shigmo festival in Vasco. I noticed a lot more people in the streets and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement. It's amazing how Goa embraces its heritage while also celebrating contemporary culture.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Chapora Fort and Candolim Beach. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems Goa has in store for us. I hear Chapora Fort offers stunning views of the coastline, and Candolim Beach is known for its tranquil atmosphere. We're also planning to have breakfast at The Black Sheep Bistro, lunch at Suzie's, and dinner at Shivers Garden Bar & Restaurant. And maybe, just maybe, I'll sneak out for a cocktail at Mafia Cocktail.

Goa continues to surprise me with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It's a place where you can lose yourself in the stories of the past, while also embracing the vibrancy of the present. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, and I look forward to discovering even more of Goa's hidden treasures.

Until tomorrow,
Anthony.
