Family Adventure in Goa: Sun, Sand, and Culture
Day 11: Goa's Final Bow: A Day of Birds, Art, and Culinary Delights
Anthony and his family conclude their Goan adventure with a bird sanctuary visit, art exploration, and a flavorful farewell feast. A perfect ending!
Farewell, Goa!
As our Goan adventure draws to a close, it’s hard to believe how quickly these past eleven days have flown by. Today was all about savoring the last moments, soaking in the culture, and creating memories that Priya, Devon, and I will cherish for years to come. It’s a bittersweet feeling, knowing that tomorrow we’ll be heading back to Toronto, but I'm also filled with gratitude for the experiences we’ve shared.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Chulha. I must say, the Murgh Ke Sooley Rajasthan was a flavorful explosion, the spices dancing on my palate and giving me the energy I needed for the day’s adventures. Priya opted for a South Indian dish, while Devon, ever the predictable one, chose the kid-friendly options. Fueled up and ready to go, we set off for the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.
Discover the enchanting Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers in the heart of Goa, where avian diversity thrives.
The sanctuary, named after the renowned Indian ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali, was a serene escape into nature. Getting there involved a short ferry ride from Ribandar, which was an experience in itself. The ferry was packed with locals and a few other tourists, all eager to explore Chorao Island. Once on the island, we hopped into a canoe, ready to explore the marshy canals. The boatmen are quite experienced and know the best spots to see the birds.
As we glided through the narrow waterways, surrounded by dense mangroves, the world seemed to quiet down. The only sounds were the gentle lapping of water against the canoe and the calls of the birds. I was immediately transported back to my childhood in Princes Town, where I spent countless hours exploring the natural wonders of Trinidad. Devon was particularly excited, his eyes wide with curiosity as he tried to spot every bird our guide pointed out. I tried my hand at bird photography, attempting to capture the vibrant colours of kingfishers and the graceful flight of egrets. Though I forgot my snorkeling gear, the canoe ride was an experience in itself.
Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
We spotted numerous species, from the common white egrets and purple herons to the more elusive kingfishers and kites. The guide, a local with an encyclopedic knowledge of the sanctuary, helped us identify each bird and shared fascinating facts about their behavior and habitat. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility amidst the lush greenery and the symphony of bird calls. It was a reminder of the simple joys in life and the importance of preserving these natural havens.
After our tranquil time at the bird sanctuary, we headed to the Museum of Goa (MOG).

I was intrigued by the ‘Walking Through A Songline’ exhibition, showcasing Australian indigenous songlines with cutting-edge digital technology. It was an immersive experience, blending art, culture, and technology in a way that resonated deeply with me.
As someone who’s always been fascinated by different cultures and their stories, I was captivated by the exhibition's exploration of the Seven Sisters Songline. The use of projection mapping and digital art to convey ancient traditions was both innovative and respectful. Priya, with her Indian heritage, found parallels between the indigenous Australian art and the ancient documentational artworks by indigenous communities in India and Goa. Devon, surprisingly, was also engaged, asking questions about the stories behind the art and the technology used to bring them to life. It was a testament to the museum’s ability to make art accessible and engaging for all ages.
Leaving the museum, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at The Karma Collection & All About Eve.

Priya was on the hunt for some unique Goan handicrafts to take back home as souvenirs, while Devon was more interested in finding a cool t-shirt to add to his collection. The store was a treasure trove of eclectic items, from vintage textiles to handcrafted jewelry. I found myself drawn to the wooden carvings and the intricate details of the local artwork. It was a perfect place to pick up a few last-minute gifts and mementos of our trip.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Thalassa, a Greek restaurant known for its stunning waterfront views and delicious Mediterranean cuisine.

I had heard so much about this place, and I was eager to experience it for myself. We arrived just in time to witness a breathtaking Goan sunset, the sky ablaze with vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple. The restaurant was buzzing with activity, the air filled with the sounds of laughter, music, and the clinking of glasses.
We ordered a variety of dishes, from the classic Greek salad to the seafood platter, each dish bursting with fresh flavors and authentic spices. Priya, a vegetarian, was delighted with the options available, while Devon devoured the souvlaki with gusto. I savored every bite, appreciating the blend of Greek and Goan influences in the cuisine. As we ate, we reminisced about our adventures over the past eleven days, from the beaches of Calangute to the spice plantations of Ponda.
The highlight of the evening was the traditional Greek dancing, complete with plate smashing. It was a lively and energetic performance that had everyone on their feet, clapping and cheering. Devon, never one to shy away from a dance floor, joined in the fun, much to the amusement of the other diners. It was a perfect ending to our Goan adventure, a celebration of culture, food, and family.
As we prepare to leave Goa, I can’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. We came here seeking a balance of relaxation and adventure, and that’s exactly what we found. We explored ancient temples, relaxed on pristine beaches, indulged in local cuisine, and immersed ourselves in the vibrant culture of Goa. We created memories that will last a lifetime, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family.
Goa, you’ve been a dream. Until next time!
Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Toronto, carrying with us the warmth and vibrancy of Goa. It’s time to return to our everyday lives, but the memories of this trip will undoubtedly stay with us, inspiring us to seek out new adventures and appreciate the beauty of the world around us. And who knows, maybe we’ll be back sooner than we think. After all, there are still so many hidden gems in Goa waiting to be discovered.
