Echoes of Faith and Flavor in Old Goa

Today was a day of diving deep into Goa's rich history and vibrant culinary scene. We started our journey in Old Goa, exploring its magnificent churches and soaking in the spiritual atmosphere, before indulging in the local flavors that make Goan cuisine so unique. It was a day of contrasts, where the solemnity of ancient architecture met the lively buzz of local life.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Copperleaf Porvorim. Priya had read rave reviews about their Goan breakfast thali, and it did not disappoint. The aroma of freshly baked poi (Goan bread) filled the air, mingling with the spicy scent of the bhaji. Devon, surprisingly, enjoyed the milder items, like the coconut pancakes. I savored every bite of the spicy sausage and the flavorful vegetable curries. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I must admit, finding vegetarian options for Priya and Devon is always a small victory, and Copperleaf delivered beautifully.

With our bellies full, we headed to Old Goa, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The first stop was the Basilica of Bom Jesus. As we approached, the sheer scale of the basilica was awe-inspiring. The intricate façade, weathered by centuries of sun and rain, told a story of faith and resilience. Inside, the atmosphere was hushed and reverent. The main attraction, of course, was the tomb of St. Francis Xavier. The artistry of the tomb, crafted from marble and jasper, was truly remarkable. I tried to capture the details with my camera, hoping to share the grandeur with everyone back home. Devon, usually restless, was surprisingly captivated by the history, asking questions about the saint and the stories behind the basilica's construction. Priya, ever the spiritual one, lit a candle and offered a silent prayer.

Goa's beauty lies not just in its beaches, but in its ability to blend history, culture, and faith into a tapestry that enchants every visitor.

Just a short walk from the Basilica, we found ourselves at the Se Cathedral, dedicated to St. Catherine. This cathedral is even larger than the Basilica. Its towering white façade gleamed in the afternoon sun. Stepping inside, I was struck by the vastness of the space and the ornate decorations. The sheer height of the vaulted ceiling made me feel incredibly small. Priya pointed out the various chapels, each dedicated to a different saint, and Devon was fascinated by the golden bell, one of the largest in Goa. I spent a good amount of time admiring the intricate wood carvings and the vibrant paintings that adorned the walls. Each corner seemed to hold a piece of history, a testament to Goa's colonial past and its enduring faith. While I am not particularly religious, I find such places incredibly interesting and they offer great photography opportunities.

By lunchtime, we were ready for another culinary adventure. We drove to Bhatti Village Family Bar & Restaurant, a local favorite known for its authentic Goan cuisine. This place was a little gem tucked away from the main tourist drag. The restaurant had a rustic, homely feel, with wooden tables and chairs set under a canopy of trees. We ordered a variety of dishes to share: fish curry, prawn balchão, and chicken cafreal. The flavors were bold and spicy, a true reflection of Goan culinary heritage. Devon, despite his initial hesitation, couldn't resist the chicken cafreal, which was cooked to perfection with a tangy marinade. Priya enjoyed the fish curry, while I savored the prawn balchão, a fiery dish that left my taste buds tingling. The owner, a friendly lady named Maria, came over to chat with us, sharing stories about her family and the history of the restaurant. It felt like we were dining with friends, a truly authentic Goan experience.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to take a break from sightseeing and relax at Joseph Bar, a legendary establishment in Panjim. This bar is known for its laid-back atmosphere, vintage décor, and an impressive selection of local and international drinks. We ordered some Kingfisher beers and settled into a cozy corner, watching the world go by. The bar was filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the easygoing vibe. Devon amused himself with the vintage posters and old photographs that adorned the walls. Priya and I reminisced about our travels, sharing stories and laughter. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

For dinner, we had reservations at The Black Sheep Bistro, a contemporary restaurant in Panjim known for its innovative take on Goan cuisine. The restaurant had a stylish, modern décor, with soft lighting and comfortable seating. We started with some appetizers: chorizo pao and mushroom bruschetta. For our main courses, Priya ordered the grilled fish, Devon had the pasta, and I opted for the beef steak. The food was exquisite, each dish a work of art. The chef had masterfully blended traditional Goan flavors with modern techniques, creating a culinary experience that was both familiar and surprising. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was perfect for a relaxed, romantic dinner. It was a fitting end to a day of cultural and culinary exploration.

Tonight, as I reflect on our second day in Goa, I'm struck by the incredible diversity of this place. From the solemn grandeur of Old Goa's churches to the spicy flavors of its cuisine, every experience has been a feast for the senses. Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Dona Paula Beach and Reis Magos Fort, hoping to uncover more of Goa's hidden gems. I'm also looking forward to doing some shopping at Rangeela Goa. I'm sure there are more stories to be told and more adventures to be had. Stay tuned!

P.S. I really need to remember to pack that first-aid kit next time!
