Snaefellsnes Peninsula: A Symphony of Stone and Sea

Today was a day of dramatic landscapes and mythical echoes as we continued our exploration of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. The raw beauty of Iceland never ceases to amaze me, and today was no exception. With my friends in tow, I set out to discover the geological wonders and coastal charms that this region is so famous for. From towering basalt columns to hidden gorges, every stop felt like stepping into a different world.



Our first stop was the Gerðuberg Cliffs. I had read about these basalt columns, but seeing them in person was something else entirely. The sheer symmetry of the hexagonal columns, stretching along the cliffside, was breathtaking. It felt as though nature had decided to play architect, creating a fortress of stone. We spent a good while just walking along the base, marveling at the precision and scale of the cliffs. It's incredible to think that these formations are the result of ancient lava flows, cooled and shaped over millennia. I couldn't help but imagine the volcanic eruptions that had birthed this landscape, a powerful reminder of Iceland's fiery heart.

Next on our itinerary was the Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint. The drive there was stunning, with the rugged coastline unfolding before us. Arnarstapi itself is a charming little village, steeped in history and surrounded by dramatic cliffs. As we walked along the coastal trail, the views were simply spectacular. The rock formations jutting out of the sea, sculpted by the relentless waves, were mesmerizing. I could see why this area is so popular with photographers – every angle offered a new and captivating composition. The air was filled with the sound of seabirds, adding to the wild and untamed atmosphere. I even spotted a few Arctic terns nesting on the cliffs, a sure sign that spring is well and truly here, even if the wind still has a bit of a bite.

We grabbed lunch at Hafnarvagninn-Fish & Chips in Arnarstapi. I had heard good things about this place, and it did not disappoint. The fish was incredibly fresh, coated in a light, crispy batter, and the chips were perfectly salted. Sitting by the harbor, enjoying our meal with the stunning coastal views, was a perfect way to recharge before our next adventure. I shared some stories with my friends, Saoirse and Hans would have loved this place!

Our final stop for the day was Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge, a place shrouded in myth and mystery. The gorge is hidden within the Botnsfjall Mountain, and from the road, it looks like little more than a crack in the rock. But as we approached the entrance, the scale of the place became apparent. We followed a narrow path alongside a stream, clambering over rocks and wading through shallow water. The air grew cooler and the sound of rushing water echoed around us. As we ventured deeper into the gorge, the walls closed in, towering above us like natural cathedrals. It was a bit of a scramble to reach the small waterfall at the end, but the effort was well worth it. The power and beauty of the water cascading down the rocks was awe-inspiring, and the sense of being enclosed by the earth was both humbling and exhilarating.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we stopped at Hlaðan Veitingahús for a well-deserved dinner. It's funny how a day of hiking and exploring can build up an appetite! The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the food was hearty and delicious. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure.

As I reflect on the day, I am struck by the sheer diversity of landscapes we experienced in such a small area. The Snaefellsnes Peninsula truly lives up to its nickname of Iceland in Miniature. From the geometric precision of the Gerðuberg Cliffs to the rugged beauty of Arnarstapi and the mythical allure of Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge, every stop offered a unique and unforgettable experience. I am so grateful to be sharing this journey with my friends, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, we're heading to Snæfellsjökull National Park, where we plan to explore the Vatnshellir Cave and take in the views from Lóndrangar View Point. I'm also hoping to pick up some local knitting at Kirkjufell knitting – a little something to remind me of this incredible place when I'm back in Berlin.



This evening, as I write this, I am filled with a sense of wonder and gratitude. Iceland continues to surprise and inspire me, and I feel so fortunate to be able to experience its beauty firsthand. I think I will try to capture some of today's moments in my sketchbook, a little something to remember this trip by. I am beginning to see why the Icelanders are so proud of their land; it is truly a special place, a place that stays with you long after you have left.
