Exploring the Wild Beauty of Iceland's Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Day 8: A Day of Serene Discoveries on Snaefellsnes
Exploring charming villages, majestic waterfalls, and unique Icelandic culture on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula with friends.

Chasing Waterfalls and History
Today was a day of gentle exploration and quiet appreciation for the beauty tucked away in the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. It wasn't about grand vistas or challenging hikes, but rather about savoring the small moments and hidden gems that make this region so special. From charming villages to cascading waterfalls, every stop offered a unique glimpse into Icelandic life and history.
We started our day with a hearty breakfast at Miðhraun - Lava Resort. The buffet was delicious, and it was the perfect fuel for the day ahead. The reviews I had read beforehand mentioned the clean accommodations and the friendly staff, and they were spot on. It’s always a good feeling when a place lives up to its reputation. I even saw a family feeding the goats – Saoirse would have loved that! Maybe next time I’ll bring the whole family.

Our first stop was the Stone Bridge near Arnarstapi. The drive itself was stunning, with the rugged coastline stretching out before us. The Stone Bridge is a captivating natural wonder, and it was easy to see why it's a favorite spot for photographers. We took our time walking along the coastal paths, breathing in the fresh sea air and admiring the unique basalt columns. It felt good to stretch our legs and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. I even managed to spot a few seabirds nesting on the cliffs – I really should have remembered my binoculars!

The beauty of Snaefellsnes lies not just in its dramatic landscapes, but in the quiet moments of connection with nature and history.
Next on our itinerary was Bæjarfoss, a graceful waterfall near Ólafsvík. The walk to the waterfall was short and easy, and soon we were standing at the base, marveling at the cascading water. Bæjarfoss is often described as a bridal veil, and it’s easy to see why – it’s delicate and ethereal. The surrounding gorge added to the sense of tranquility, and we spent a few moments simply listening to the soothing sound of the water.

Afterward, we decided to grab a quick lunch at Hafnarvagninn-Fish & Chips in Stykkishólmur. Fish and chips seemed like the perfect choice for a seaside town. The reviews I read mentioned the fresh, sustainably caught fish, and I wasn't disappointed. The fish was perfectly fried, and the chips were crispy and delicious. We enjoyed our meal by the harbor, watching the boats bobbing in the water.

With our bellies full, we made our way to the Norwegian House, a regional museum in Stykkishólmur. Built in 1832, it was the first wood-frame residence with two full-sized stories in Iceland. The wood was imported from Norway, hence the name. As someone with a keen interest in history, I found the museum fascinating. It offered a glimpse into the past, showcasing the lives of those who lived in this region centuries ago. The lower level had rotating exhibitions, and I enjoyed browsing the museum store, where I picked up some local sweets as a treat for later.

As evening approached, we drove to Kleppjárnsreykir for dinner at Hverinn - Restaurant & Bar. The restaurant is known for its Icelandic home cuisine, using fresh ingredients from local producers and organic vegetables from their own farm. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I opted for the lamb, while my friends tried the fresh seafood. Everything was delicious, and it was clear that the chefs took pride in their craft. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring.

Finally, we decided to check out Gaukurinn, a bar in Reykjavík known for its vibrant atmosphere and live music. While it was a bit of a drive, we were eager to experience some of Reykjavik's nightlife. Gaukurinn did not disappoint. The bar had a cozy, energetic vibe, and the live music was fantastic. It was a great place to unwind and enjoy a few drinks after a long day. I remember reading that Gaukurinn is a safe place for all people, and I definitely felt that vibe. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.
