Farewell, Snaefellsnes!

As our Snaefellsnes adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible tapestry of experiences we've woven over the past nine days. It's amazing how much this peninsula packs into its relatively small area – a microcosm of Iceland's most captivating features. From the dramatic coastlines to the serene hills, every corner turned revealed a new vista, a new story etched into the landscape. Today was all about savoring those final moments, soaking in the atmosphere, and etching these memories into our hearts before heading back to Reykjavik and, eventually, Berlin.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Arnarstapi Center and Snjófell Restaurant. After fueling up, we decided to start our day with a visit to Helgafell. The crisp morning air invigorated us as we began our ascent. It wasn't a strenuous hike, more of a gentle climb, but the panoramic views from the summit were nothing short of breathtaking. The landscape stretched out before us, a patchwork of lava fields, coastline, and distant mountains. According to local legend, if you climb Helgafell in silence and make three wishes while facing east, your wishes will come true. I'm not usually one for such things, but I couldn't resist whispering my hopes into the wind. Whether they come true or not, the moment of quiet contemplation amidst such stunning scenery was a gift in itself.

Next on our itinerary was Berserkjahraun, a lava field steeped in Viking history. The landscape here was stark and otherworldly, a testament to the raw power of nature. Legend has it that two Berserkers, or Viking warriors, carved a path through this treacherous terrain at the behest of their master. The story is filled with betrayal and violence, a dark chapter in Iceland's past. Walking through the lava field, I could almost feel the echoes of those ancient struggles, the weight of history pressing down on the landscape. It was a sobering experience, a reminder of the human dramas that have unfolded against this backdrop of natural beauty.

It is not down in any map; true places never are.

For lunch, we stopped at Skipper Restaurant, a cozy spot with stunning views of the harbor. The seafood soup was the perfect antidote to the cool wind, warming us from the inside out. As we ate, we watched the fishing boats bobbing gently in the water, imagining the lives of the sailors who brave the elements to bring in their daily catch. It's these small details, these glimpses into the everyday lives of the local people, that truly enrich a travel experience.

After lunch, we drove towards Lóndrangar, the basalt sea stacks that rise majestically from the ocean. These towering formations are remnants of an ancient volcanic crater, sculpted by the relentless forces of wind and wave. The cliffs were teeming with birdlife, adding a lively soundtrack to the dramatic scenery. I could have spent hours simply watching the waves crash against the rocks, feeling the spray on my face and listening to the cries of the gulls. It was a powerful reminder of the untamed beauty of this island.

Before dinner, we made a quick stop at Skipavík verslun, a local shop, to pick up a few souvenirs. I found a beautiful hand-knitted wool scarf, a perfect reminder of our time in Iceland. It's these little mementos that help to keep the memories alive long after the trip is over.

Our final dinner in Snaefellsnes was at Narfeyrarstofa, a charming restaurant known for its innovative take on traditional Icelandic cuisine. I savored every bite of the meal, knowing that it would be a while before I tasted such fresh, flavorful ingredients again. As we raised our glasses in a toast, I felt a pang of sadness that our adventure was coming to an end, but also a deep sense of gratitude for all that we had experienced.

Reflecting on our journey, I am struck by the sheer diversity of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. It truly is a microcosm of Iceland, offering a taste of everything that makes this country so special. From the dramatic coastlines to the serene hills, from the glaciers to the lava fields, every corner turned revealed a new vista, a new story etched into the landscape. The people we met along the way, their warmth and hospitality, added another layer of richness to our experience. Icelanders have a deep connection to their land, a respect for its power and a love for its beauty. It's a connection that I felt myself drawn into, a sense of belonging that transcended my own cultural background.

Traveling with friends made this journey even more special. Sharing these experiences with like-minded people amplified the joy and created memories that we will cherish for years to come. Hans would have loved this trip, I know it. Perhaps we can plan a return visit with Saoirse sometime in the future. She would be fascinated by the lava fields and the bird cliffs, and I can already picture her climbing Helgafell with boundless energy.

As I sit here now, back in our cozy Airbnb, packing our bags for the journey home, I can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. We came to Snaefellsnes seeking adventure, and we found it in abundance. We challenged ourselves physically, pushing our limits on hikes and explorations. We immersed ourselves in the local culture, learning about the history and traditions of this unique corner of the world. And we connected with each other, strengthening our bonds of friendship and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

This trip has also reinforced my belief in the importance of sustainable travel. We made a conscious effort to support local businesses, to minimize our environmental impact, and to respect the natural beauty of the peninsula. It's a responsibility that I take seriously, both as a traveler and as a global citizen. I believe that we all have a role to play in preserving these precious places for future generations.

As I close this chapter of our Icelandic adventure, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and anticipation. Gratitude for the experiences we have had, the people we have met, and the lessons we have learned. And anticipation for the journeys that lie ahead, the new places we will explore, and the new stories we will write. For now, though, it's time to say farewell to Snaefellsnes, a place that has captured my heart and left an indelible mark on my soul.

Tomorrow, we head back to Reykjavik and prepare for our flight back to Berlin. It's always a bittersweet feeling, leaving a place that has become so familiar and comforting. But I know that the memories of Snaefellsnes will stay with me long after I have returned to my everyday life. And who knows, maybe someday I'll find myself back on this magical peninsula, ready for another adventure.

Before I sign off, I must say that the Snaefellsnes Peninsula is a place that truly deserves its nickname: Iceland in Miniature. It's a destination that I would recommend to anyone seeking a unique and unforgettable travel experience. So, if you're looking for a place to challenge yourself, to immerse yourself in nature, and to connect with a rich and vibrant culture, look no further than Snaefellsnes. You won't be disappointed.

Until next time, takk fyrir (thank you) Snaefellsnes!
