Today was a delightful mix of historical exploration, culinary indulgence, and a spot of retail therapy, making it a perfect day in Sintra with my family. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you're surrounded by such beauty and charm.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Nau Palatina. This charming restaurant, nestled in São Pedro de Penaferrim, is just a short walk from the bustling center of Sintra. The restaurant celebrates Portugal's rich maritime history, and the atmosphere was just perfect to start the day. Saoirse was particularly excited about the ham-and-almond-topped toasts, while Hans enjoyed the classic Portuguese coffee. I opted for the pink prawns, which were incredibly fresh and flavorful. It’s always a pleasure to find a place where the staff is so welcoming and passionate about their food. I must admit, it reminded me a bit of home, the warm welcome we received. I am always keen to find that personal connection. It's those little details that make a place special.

After breakfast, we headed to Abegoaria e Quinta da Pena. This new tourist spot, which opened in June 2013, is within the Parque da Pena. It’s a fascinating place, especially if you appreciate equestrian traditions. The Abegoaria, a beautifully restored 19th-century building, hosts exhibitions and conferences. Saoirse was absolutely thrilled to see the horses, goats, sheep, and other animals that live on the Quinta. I learned that Abegoaria e Quinta da Pena offers a glimpse into Portuguese history and culture through beekeeping traditions and gardens. The blend of nature and history was captivating. We even considered a horse ride, but Saoirse was more interested in the pony rides, which she absolutely adored. Hans enjoyed strolling through the meticulously preserved gardens, commenting on the impressive restoration work. The crisp January air made the experience even more refreshing, a welcome change from the Berlin winter. I found myself reflecting on my own childhood in Westport, surrounded by the natural beauty of County Mayo. It’s wonderful to share these experiences with Saoirse and Hans, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Next on our itinerary was Parques de Sintra-Monte da Lua (PSML). This UNESCO World Heritage site is a gem, showcasing Portugal's rich architectural and natural heritage. Although we didn't have a specific event to attend, just wandering through the grounds was an experience in itself. PSML manages several cultural sites, including the Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle. We spent a good amount of time exploring the gardens, enjoying the serene atmosphere and the stunning views. Saoirse was particularly fascinated by the Pena Palace, with its vibrant colors and eclectic mix of architectural styles. It's a place that truly sparks the imagination. The attention to detail in preserving these historical sites is remarkable, and it’s clear that PSML is dedicated to safeguarding and promoting Sintra's cultural landscape.

For lunch, we decided to try Harkos sushi. This Japanese restaurant is known for its great service and friendly staff. We all enjoy sushi, so it was a nice change of pace from the traditional Portuguese cuisine we've been indulging in. The restaurant has a lovely decor and a calm ambiance, making it a relaxing spot for a midday meal. Saoirse particularly enjoyed the dragon rolls, while Hans and I savored the sashimi. The food was fresh and delicious, and the prices were quite reasonable. It was a delightful culinary experience that left us feeling satisfied and energized for the rest of the day. I was impressed by the presentation of the dishes; it reminded me of some of the trendy restaurants in Berlin, where the culinary scene is constantly evolving. Hans appreciated the efficient service, as we were keen to move on to our next activity.

In the afternoon, we drove to CascaiShopping for some retail therapy. This large shopping center offers a wide range of stores, from fashion to electronics. Saoirse was excited to explore the various shops, while Hans was more interested in finding a new book to read. I enjoyed browsing the fashion boutiques, looking for unique pieces that would remind me of our trip to Portugal. We also took a break at one of the cafes, enjoying a coffee and a pastry while people-watching. CascaiShopping has a lively atmosphere, and it was a fun experience to see the local culture and trends. It’s always interesting to observe how different cultures approach shopping and leisure. Saoirse was particularly thrilled with a new dress she found, and Hans managed to find a rare edition of a Portuguese novel. I picked up a beautiful scarf, a perfect souvenir to remind me of our time in Sintra.

Finally, for dinner, we had a reservation at Arola, located within the Penha Longa Resort. This Michelin-star-adjacent restaurant offers a modern space with wonderful nature views and a sophisticated dining room. The menu combines Iberian flavors with modern culinary techniques, creating a unique culinary experience. We opted for the tasting menu, which allowed us to sample a variety of dishes. The food was innovative and perfectly cooked, and the wine pairings were exceptional. The service was attentive and professional, making us feel pampered and well taken care of. The view from the restaurant was stunning, overlooking the golf course and the Serra de Sintra. It was the perfect way to end our day, savoring delicious food and wine while enjoying the beautiful scenery. I was particularly impressed by the veal croquettes, while Hans raved about the entrecôte. Saoirse, surprisingly, loved the patatas bravas, although she found them a bit too spicy. The overall experience was exceptional, and we left feeling grateful for such a memorable day.

As I reflect on today’s adventures, I can’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore such a beautiful and culturally rich region with my family. Sintra has a unique charm that captivates the senses and inspires the soul. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Gruta do Labirinto and The Warrior Statue. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery and adventure in this enchanting corner of Portugal. I am also keen to visit Casa do Fauno in the evening. It sounds like the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.
