Day 13: Delving into Earth's Wonders
Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Kochi Prefecture. We ventured deep into the earth and then chased the thunderous roar of water cascading down cliffs. It was a day of contrasts, from the hushed stillness of ancient caves to the invigorating spray of a powerful waterfall, creating memories that I know we will cherish for years to come.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Eki-mae Shokudo. This charming spot, known for its authentic Japanese cuisine, was the perfect place to fuel up for our adventures. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Hans enjoyed a comforting bowl of ramen. Saoirse, ever the adventurous eater, tried some grilled fish and declared it delicious. We left with full bellies and a sense of excitement for what the day held.
First on our itinerary was the Ryugado Museum. The museum provided fascinating context for the Ryugado Cave, which we were about to explore. The Ryugado Cave has been designated as a National Natural monument of Japan. Saoirse was particularly intrigued by the displays of pottery and earthenware vessels discovered within the cave, remnants of human habitation dating back to the Yayoi period. It's amazing to think that people lived in these caves so long ago. After learning about the cave's history, we were eager to descend into its depths.

The Ryugado Cave itself was an awe-inspiring experience. As we stepped inside, the temperature dropped noticeably, a welcome change from the August heat. The cave is believed to have formed over 175 million years ago. The path wound its way through narrow passages, past towering stalactites and stalagmites, and alongside an underground stream. Saoirse was thrilled to spot a few bats flitting overhead. I was impressed by the colorful lights illuminating the cave's formations, creating a magical atmosphere. There were parts where we had to crouch to pass through, which added to the sense of adventure. The standard route took about 45 minutes to an hour to complete.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in conquering new lands, but in exploring the hidden depths of our own.
After emerging from the Ryugado Cave, blinking in the sunlight, we were ready for lunch. We drove towards our next destination, Todoroki Falls, stopping at Restaurant Obokekyo Mannaka along the way. This restaurant, with its machine ticket ordering system, offered a unique and efficient dining experience. While some reviews mentioned the food was just okay, we found it to be a satisfying and reasonably priced meal. Hans and I enjoyed some local dishes, while Saoirse opted for a simple but tasty bowl of udon. The restaurant also offered a picturesque view of the gorge, enhancing the overall dining atmosphere.

With renewed energy, we continued our drive to Todoroki Falls. The drive itself was an adventure, with narrow, winding roads that offered glimpses of stunning scenery. Upon arrival, we embarked on a hike to reach the falls. The hike to Todoroki Falls is considered reasonably strenuous, and the trail is not very well paved. As we walked deeper into the forest, the sound of rushing water grew louder, building anticipation for the spectacle to come. The signage was not clear on the trail that even native speakers took wrong turns either leading to Todoroki falls or some other falls.
Finally, we reached Todoroki Falls, and it was truly breathtaking. The water cascaded down with tremendous force, creating a thunderous roar that echoed through the surrounding mountains. Mist filled the air, and we could feel the cool spray on our faces. Saoirse was mesmerized by the sight, and we spent a long time simply watching the water plunge into the pool below. The main waterfall is the largest in all of the Shikoku region.

After a day of exploring natural wonders, we were ready for a relaxing evening. We drove back to Kochi City and decided to try Munagin, a restaurant specializing in Unagi. It was a delightful experience. The eel was grilled to perfection, with a smoky flavor that was simply divine. Saoirse, who is usually a bit picky, surprised us by devouring her portion of Unagi. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure.

But the night was not over yet. We decided to check out Irish Pub Amontillado, an unexpected find in Kochi City. The pub had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, with wooden furnishings and Irish decor. Hans, being German, was particularly excited to see a selection of international beers on tap. I opted for a Guinness, while Saoirse enjoyed a soft drink. The pub was lively and filled with locals and tourists alike, creating a convivial atmosphere. It was a fun and relaxing way to unwind after a long day of exploring. For serious beer drinkers, this is the go-to pub in Kochi City.
