Homeward Bound, But Forever in Our Hearts

As the sun begins its slow descent over Clew Bay, casting a golden hue across Westport, I find myself reflecting on our final day in this charming Irish town. It feels bittersweet, like the last notes of a beloved song. This week has been a tapestry woven with threads of family, faith, and the undeniable allure of my homeland. I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences we've shared, the memories we've made, and the deep connection we've reaffirmed with our Irish roots.

Our last day began, as many others did, with a hearty breakfast. We decided to try The Gallery Cafe, Wine & Tapas Bar (Generally open Tues - Sat), a spot I'd heard whispers about for its quirky charm and delicious offerings. I’m so glad we did! Tucked away, it felt like stumbling upon a local secret. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with shelves lined with second-hand books and vinyl records. Hans enjoyed a robust coffee, while Saoirse devoured a pastry with gusto. I opted for a delightful tea, and we shared a few tapas-style dishes. It was the perfect way to start our day, fueling us for the adventures ahead.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we embarked on a Westport Walking Tour. As someone who grew up here, I thought I knew Westport like the back of my hand, but I was pleasantly surprised. Our guide, whose name escapes me now, was a wealth of knowledge, sharing fascinating stories and historical tidbits about the town. We strolled along the picturesque streets, admiring the Georgian architecture and learning about Westport's evolution from a small village to a thriving town. Saoirse was particularly captivated by the tales of pirates and smugglers who once roamed these shores. Even Hans, who typically prefers a more independent style of exploration, was engaged by the guide's passion and enthusiasm. It was a lovely way to connect with the town's past and appreciate its unique character.

Our next stop was St Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church, a beautiful building that holds a special place in my heart. I remember attending mass here as a child, the scent of incense and the sound of the choir filling the air. The church's history is as rich as its architecture, with the original foundation stone being laid in 1813. The church has evolved over the years, with renovations and additions reflecting the changing times. I wanted to share this piece of my past with Hans and Saoirse. We lit a candle for my grandmother, who was a devout member of the parish, and spent a few moments in quiet reflection. Saoirse was fascinated by the stained-glass windows, their vibrant colors telling stories of faith and devotion. It was a peaceful and moving experience, a reminder of the enduring power of community and tradition.

After our visit to the church, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Westport Design, a local shop known for its unique crafts and souvenirs. I was on the hunt for a special memento to remind us of our trip, and Saoirse was eager to find a gift for her best friend back in Berlin. The shop was a treasure trove of Irish craftsmanship, from hand-knitted scarves to intricately designed candles. I finally settled on a beautiful piece of Connemara marble jewelry, its green hues echoing the rolling hills of Mayo. Saoirse found a charming little sheep figurine, perfect for her friend's collection. It felt good to support local artisans and bring home a piece of Ireland with us.

Lunch beckoned, and we found ourselves at The Towers Bar & Restaurant Westport, a lively spot overlooking the harbor. The views were stunning, the atmosphere was buzzing, and the food was delicious. Hans savored a plate of fresh seafood, while Saoirse opted for a classic burger and chips. I decided to try the mussels, and they were simply divine. The service was friendly and efficient, and we left feeling satisfied and energized. It was the perfect spot for a final taste of Westport's culinary scene.

Tomorrow, we embark on our journey back to Berlin, our hearts full of cherished memories. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been a homecoming, a reconnection with my roots, and a chance to share the beauty of Westport with my family. I'm grateful for every moment, every experience, and every person we've met along the way. Westport, you'll always hold a special place in my heart.

As we prepare to leave, I know that this is not goodbye, but rather, until we meet again. The spirit of Westport, its charm, and its people will stay with us, inspiring us and reminding us of the importance of family, faith, and connection to our roots. Until next time, Slán go fóill!
