A Day of Westport Wonders
Today was a whirlwind of activity, blending the tranquility of nature with the excitement of the sea and the charm of local culture. It’s days like these that remind me why I love Westport so much – there’s always something new to discover, even in familiar places. From cycling along the scenic Great Western Greenway to braving the waves on a Sea Safari and browsing the shelves of a beloved bookshop, Westport offers a delightful mix of adventure and relaxation.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Gavin’s Cafe. This cozy spot on Bridge Street is a local favorite, and it's easy to see why. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, mingling with the delicious scent of a Full Irish breakfast. Saoirse was particularly excited, and Hans and I enjoyed the strong coffee, which was much needed to kickstart our day. Fuelled up, we were ready to tackle the Great Western Greenway.
The Great Western Greenway is a must-do for anyone visiting Westport. This 42-kilometer trail follows the route of the old Westport to Achill railway line, which closed in 1937. It's now a traffic-free path perfect for cycling and walking, offering stunning views of Clew Bay, Croagh Patrick, and the Nephin Beg mountain range. We rented bikes in town and set off towards Newport. The gentle gradient made for an easy and enjoyable ride, even for Saoirse.
The landscape was breathtaking. Lush green fields stretched out on either side, dotted with grazing sheep. The sun was shining, and the air was fresh and clean. It was a far cry from the bustling streets of Berlin, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me. Saoirse was in her element, excitedly pointing out cows and sheep. Hans, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the old railway bridges and tunnels along the way.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand expeditions, but in the simple act of slowing down and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us.
We stopped for a breather in Newport, a charming heritage town known for its seven-arch railway viaduct spanning the Black Oak River. We admired the view and took some photos before continuing our journey. The Greenway is well-maintained and easy to follow, with plenty of signposts along the way. It's a fantastic way to experience the beauty of County Mayo at your own pace. I made a mental note to bring my parents here when they visit next time; they would absolutely love it.
After a good cycle, we returned to Westport and grabbed lunch at Cobbler's Bar & Courtyard. This traditional pub is located right in the heart of town, offering a relaxed atmosphere and delicious food. We sat in the courtyard, enjoying the sunshine and the lively buzz of the town. The menu featured classic Irish dishes with a modern twist, and there were plenty of vegan options available too. Hans opted for the fish and chips, while Saoirse chose a burger from the kids' menu. I decided on the vegan option, a hearty vegetable stew that was bursting with flavor.
After lunch, it was time for our Westport Sea Safari. I had booked this in advance, knowing that Saoirse would be thrilled by the prospect of a boat trip. We headed to the harbor and boarded the boat, eager to explore Clew Bay from the water. The Sea Safari promised stunning views of the coastline, hidden inlets, and the chance to spot local wildlife, including seals and seabirds.
As we set off, the wind whipped through our hair, and the salty spray of the Atlantic Ocean kissed our faces. The views were indeed spectacular. The rugged coastline stretched out before us, dotted with small islands and dramatic cliffs. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing fascinating insights into the local ecosystem, history, and culture. He told us tales of the legendary pirate queen Granuaile (Grace O’Malley), who once ruled these waters.
We were lucky enough to spot a colony of seals basking in the sun on a rocky outcrop. Saoirse was ecstatic, clapping her hands and shouting with delight. The seals seemed unfazed by our presence, lazily stretching and yawning as we watched them. It was a magical moment, connecting us with the wild beauty of the Irish coast. I felt a surge of pride, knowing that Saoirse was experiencing the same natural wonders that I had loved as a child.
Back on dry land, we decided to take a leisurely stroll through town. Westport is a joy to explore on foot, with its colorful buildings, charming shops, and friendly locals. We wandered down Shop Street, browsing the various boutiques and souvenir shops. Then, we made a stop at McLoughlin's Bookshop, a family-run business that has been a fixture in Westport since 1947. As a literature lover, I couldn't resist a visit.
McLoughlin's Bookshop is a treasure trove for bookworms. The shelves were packed with a wide range of titles, from Irish literature and history to contemporary fiction and children's books. The aroma of old books filled the air, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I browsed the shelves, savoring the familiar feeling of being surrounded by stories. Saoirse, surprisingly, was equally captivated, drawn to the colorful displays of children's books. Hans, though not a huge reader himself, appreciated the history and charm of the shop.
I ended up buying a collection of Irish folk tales for Saoirse and a new novel by a local author for myself. As we left the bookshop, clutching our purchases, I felt a sense of contentment. There’s something special about supporting local businesses and discovering new literary treasures.
For dinner, we had a reservation at La Fougère Restaurant at Knockranny House Hotel. This elegant restaurant offers stunning views of Westport and Clew Bay, providing the perfect backdrop for a memorable meal. The menu featured modern Irish cuisine with a focus on locally sourced ingredients. I was excited to try the seafood, knowing that it would be incredibly fresh.
The meal was exquisite. We started with scallops, perfectly seared and served with a delicate sauce. For my main course, I chose the sea bass, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Hans opted for the venison, while Saoirse enjoyed a simple pasta dish. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was sophisticated yet relaxed. As we savored our meal, we watched the sun set over Clew Bay, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a truly magical experience.
Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share my hometown with my family. Westport has a way of capturing your heart, with its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. It’s a place where you can reconnect with nature, discover new adventures, and create lasting memories. And as we prepare for another day of exploration tomorrow – with plans to visit Brackloon Woods and Bertra Beach, followed by a relaxing evening at Cosy Joe's – I know that our Westport adventure is far from over. Tonight, however, I'm looking forward to a restful night at The Wyatt, ready to embrace whatever tomorrow brings.
I'm also reminded that Westport is hosting the Westport Folk and Bluegrass Festival from June 6 to June 8, and later in the summer, the Westport House Music Festival. It seems like there's always something going on here!
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Brackloon Woods and Bertra Beach, followed by dinner at The Tavern Bar & Restaurant and perhaps a nightcap at Cosy Joe's. It's another day to look forward to, filled with new adventures and cherished moments with my family.
