Evening Explorations in Gion

As my solo adventure in Kyoto nears its end, I wanted to soak in as much of its unique atmosphere as possible. Today was all about embracing the city's vibrant nightlife and culinary scene, a fitting farewell to this incredible cultural hub. I was keen to explore the famed Gion district, sample some of Kyoto's finest cuisine, and maybe even stumble upon a hidden gem or two.

The day began with a leisurely stroll through Pontocho, a narrow alleyway nestled along the Kamogawa River. Even in the late afternoon, the area was buzzing with anticipation for the evening ahead. Lanterns were being lit, casting a warm glow on the traditional wooden buildings that lined the street. It felt like stepping back in time, a world away from the modern city that surrounds it. I imagined what it must have been like centuries ago, when geishas and merchants frequented these very streets.

Next on the agenda was Hanamikoji Street, the heart of Gion. This is where Kyoto's geisha culture truly comes alive. The street is lined with beautifully preserved machiya houses, many of which are exclusive teahouses where geishas entertain their guests. Though spotting a geisha is never guaranteed, the atmosphere alone is worth the visit. I wandered along the cobblestone street, admiring the traditional architecture and imagining the stories these walls could tell. The air was filled with a sense of mystery and elegance, a reminder of Kyoto's rich history and artistic heritage.

Kyoto's charm lies not only in its ancient temples and serene gardens but also in the vibrant tapestry of its nightlife, where tradition and modernity intertwine.

As evening approached, it was time to indulge in Kyoto's renowned culinary scene. For dinner, I had made a reservation at French Dining Top of Kyoto, a revolving restaurant located on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto. I was looking forward to a fusion of French cuisine with a Japanese touch. The restaurant offered panoramic views of the city, which slowly rotated as I dined. It was a truly unique experience, savoring exquisite French dishes while gazing out at the illuminated cityscape of Kyoto. The food was exceptional. Each course was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. It was a delightful blend of French techniques and Japanese ingredients, a testament to Kyoto's culinary creativity. I enjoyed a delicious lobster dish and wagyu steak.

Alternatively, I considered dining at ryu no hige, known for its creative blend of Kyoto cuisine with a French twist, or Jiki Miyazawa, a Michelin-starred restaurant offering innovative Japanese cuisine. Perhaps next time I am here, I will try to get a reservation at one of those restaurants. Both restaurants are highly regarded, and I'm sure the experience would have been equally memorable.

After dinner, I decided to explore Kyoto's bar scene. I ventured out to Bar Fishbowl, a quirky spot known for its unique atmosphere. The bar had a large aquarium, creating a surreal and relaxing ambiance. I sipped on a Japanese whiskey, watching the colorful fish swim by. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. The bar had a great selection of Japanese whiskeys and craft beers. I also heard of other places like Gion Finlandia Bar, known for its high-end spirit-based cocktails. There is also Pig & Whistle, a British pub.

As I walked back to the Park Hotel Kyoto, I reflected on the day's experiences. Kyoto at night is a magical place, full of hidden corners and unexpected delights. From the geisha districts to the gourmet restaurants and quirky bars, there's something for everyone to enjoy. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this side of Kyoto, a side that is both ancient and modern, elegant and vibrant. The weather in early March is still a bit chilly, with temperatures ranging from 2°C to 12°C, so I was glad I had packed a warm coat and scarf. There was a chance of rain, but luckily the weather held up for my evening explorations.

Tomorrow marks the end of my solo journey in Kyoto. I plan to visit Osaka Castle and the Umeda Sky Building before heading to the airport. While I'm excited to see more of Japan, I'll miss the charm and tranquility of Kyoto. It's a city that has captured my heart, and I know I'll be back again someday.

I must remember to buy a travel adapter and sunscreen at the D&DEPARTMENT KYOTO shop before heading to the airport. I completely forgot to pack them, and they would be useful for future trips. It's always something, isn't it?

As I prepared for my final day, I felt a sense of both excitement and nostalgia. Kyoto had been an incredible experience, a journey of cultural immersion and self-discovery. I was eager to see what Osaka had in store, but I knew that a part of me would always remain in Kyoto, among the ancient temples, serene gardens, and enchanting streets.

Thinking back to my time in Berlin, I realized how much I had missed traveling solo. While I love exploring new places with Hans and Saoirse, there's something special about venturing out on my own, discovering hidden gems at my own pace, and connecting with the local culture on a deeper level. I made a mental note to plan another solo trip soon, perhaps to Ireland to visit my family in Westport. It had been too long since I last saw them, and I knew they would be thrilled to hear about my adventures in Japan.

As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of geishas, French cuisine, and aquariums filled with colorful fish. Kyoto had truly cast its spell on me, and I knew that its magic would stay with me long after I left its ancient gates. Now, off to Osaka!
