Chasing Waterfalls and Icelandic Charm

Today was all about embracing the raw beauty of Iceland and savoring the simple joys of local life. With Liam and the kids in tow, we set out to explore the waterfalls near Skaftafell, and let me tell you, it was an adventure filled with awe-inspiring sights and heartwarming moments. It's days like these that remind me why I love sharing our family's travel experiences.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Munkar in Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The aroma of freshly baked pastries and strong Icelandic coffee filled the air, instantly making us feel at home. The kids were particularly thrilled with the selection of traditional treats, and Liam and I enjoyed the cozy atmosphere. It’s amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for an entire day of exploration. According to Evendo, Cafe Munkar is known for traditional dishes and modern comfort.

Fueled and ready, we headed towards our first destination: Skaftárhreppur Waterfall. The drive itself was a treat, with the stark, snow-dusted landscapes stretching out before us. As we approached the waterfall, the sound of cascading water grew louder, building anticipation. Skaftárhreppur Waterfall is easily accessible, right next to the road, making it a perfect quick stop. The waterfall itself was a sight to behold, a powerful torrent of water plunging into the icy depths below. I spent a good while snapping photos, trying to capture the raw energy and beauty of the falls. The kids, of course, were more interested in throwing snowballs and exploring the surrounding area.

Next on our list was Fossálar Waterfall, another hidden gem along the southern coast. Fossálar is a smaller waterfall, but its proximity to the Ring Road and its photogenic qualities make it a popular stop for photographers. The falls were incredibly serene, with multiple tiers creating a mesmerizing visual spectacle. The surrounding lava field, formed during the super-eruption of Laki in 1783, added a sense of history and drama to the scene. I can see why Fossalar Waterfall has managed to be a perfect stop to capture the authentic Icelandic beauty.

After a morning of chasing waterfalls, we were ready for a warm lunch. We stopped at Skaftfell Bistro, a cozy restaurant in Seyðisfjörður. Though it was a bit of a drive, the promise of authentic Icelandic flavors was too tempting to resist. The bistro is located on the first floor of the Skaftfell Art Center, offering an innovative menu that reinterprets traditional Icelandic fare with a modern twist. Liam and I savored the local lamb dishes, while the kids devoured their pizzas. It was the perfect way to refuel and recharge before our next adventure.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to treat ourselves to a relaxing drink at Systrakaffi. This family-run café in Kirkjubæjarklaustur is known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious drinks. Systrakaffi is a cozy family-run café in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, serving up delicious food and drinks every day. We settled into a corner booth, ordered hot chocolates for the kids and local beers for Liam and me. The café was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the warmth and camaraderie. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures. The kids loved the homemade cakes. We even saw that Systrakaffi had great ratings and a hot chocolate on their menu.

Finally, we ended our day with dinner at Hvönn Restaurant in Skálholt. Hvönn Restaurant is open from 11:30-21:00 and is a great place to stop for a meal on the Golden Circle tour. The restaurant focuses on old traditional food, but puts a modern twist on it. The ambiance was elegant yet welcoming, and the menu featured a delightful array of Icelandic specialties. I opted for the Arctic char, while Liam chose the lamb. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. It was a truly memorable dining experience, a perfect ending to a perfect day.

As we drove back to our accommodation, the Northern Lights began to dance across the sky. We pulled over to the side of the road, bundled up in blankets, and watched in awe as the green and purple hues swirled above us. It was a magical moment, a reminder of the incredible beauty and wonder that Iceland has to offer. Days like today remind me of how lucky I am to share these experiences with my family. As much as I love capturing the perfect shot, it’s the memories we create together that truly matter.

Tomorrow, we’re heading to Skógafoss and Dverghamrar. I’ve heard amazing things about Skógafoss, and I’m excited to capture its grandeur through my lens. Dverghamrar, with its unique rock formations, promises to be another fascinating stop. We plan to grab breakfast at Glacier Goodies, lunch at Ishusid Pizzeria Restaurant, and dinner back at Skaftfell Bistro. I’m also looking forward to visiting The potato storage, a local shop that I’ve heard great things about. Stay tuned for more adventures from Iceland!

Until then, takk fyrir and good night!
