Solo Expedition to Iceland's Hornstrandir Nature Reserve
Day 1: Arrival in Ísafjörður: A Promising Start to My Hornstrandir Expedition
Embark on my journey to Iceland's remote Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. Discover Ísafjörður's charm, local cuisine, and handcrafted treasures.

Setting the Scene: Ísafjörður Beckons
After what felt like an eternity in transit, trading the familiar peaks of Banff for the promise of Iceland's wild, remote beauty, I've finally arrived in Ísafjörður. The air is crisp, carrying a hint of the sea, and the town itself is a charming cluster of colorful buildings nestled against the dramatic backdrop of the Westfjords. It's a world away from my everyday life, and the perfect starting point for my solo adventure into the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve.
The journey here was long, involving a flight from Canada to Reykjavik, then a smaller domestic flight to Ísafjörður. The final leg will be a boat ride to Hornstrandir itself. I already feel a sense of accomplishment just making it this far!
Before venturing into the wilderness, I decided to spend today exploring Ísafjörður, stocking up on last-minute supplies, and soaking in the local atmosphere. After all, it’s not every day I find myself in such a remote and unique corner of the world.
My first impression of Ísafjörður is one of quaint charm and resilience. The colorful houses seem to huddle together for warmth, and the harbor is bustling with fishing boats, a testament to the town’s deep connection to the sea. It’s a place where the pace of life is slower, and the people seem to have a quiet strength born from living in such a rugged environment.
I can already tell this trip is going to be one for the books. I'm eager to explore Hornstrandir, capture its beauty through my lens, and challenge myself in ways I never thought possible. But first, let me tell you about my day in Ísafjörður.

A Taste of Ísafjörður: Culinary Delights
My first stop was Tjöruhúsið for breakfast, a restaurant renowned for its fresh seafood. Housed in a building that once served as a tar factory in 1781, its interior reminds me of a medieval tavern. The animated yells of “Gellur! Gellur er komin!” (“Cod tongues! Cod tongues here!”) as the staff plonk down hulking pans of sizzling fish furthers the medieval vibe. Sadly, it seems like I arrived too early in the season, as they are closed between early November through to late March. Instead, I found a charming little cafe and enjoyed a hearty Icelandic breakfast of skyr with berries and a strong cup of coffee. Fuelled up, I was ready to explore more of the town.

For lunch, I ventured to Edinborg Bistro. The bistro prides itself on using local ingredients, and I was eager to taste some authentic Icelandic cuisine. I settled on a traditional lamb soup, a hearty and flavorful dish that warmed me from the inside out. It was the perfect way to experience the local culinary scene.

As evening approached, I had dinner at Jötunn restaurant. This restaurant is known for its sushi and friendly atmosphere. I decided to try their Arctic char sushi, a local specialty. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the sushi was expertly prepared. It was a delightful fusion of Icelandic ingredients and Japanese culinary techniques.

Exploring Local Treasures: A Visit to Rammagerð Ísafjarðar
After satisfying my taste buds, I decided to explore the local shops. I stumbled upon Rammagerð Ísafjarðar, a charming gift shop known for its handcrafted items and local treasures. As soon as I stepped inside, I was greeted by a warm ambiance of wood and artistry. The shop was filled with unique creations from local artisans, including beautifully crafted aluminum frames and exquisite wooden pieces.

I spent a good hour browsing through the shop, admiring the craftsmanship and learning about the stories behind the products. I found a delicate silver pendant depicting a Viking rune, which I immediately bought as a memento of my trip. I also picked up a few small gifts for Liam and my family back in Banff. It's always nice to bring back a piece of the places I visit.
Shopping at Rammagerð Ísafjarðar was more than just a transaction; it was an immersive experience that connected me to the local culture and supported the talented artisans of the region. It’s these kinds of experiences that make traveling so rewarding.
Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a stroll along the harbor, watching the fishing boats bobbing gently in the water. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the town and the surrounding mountains. It was a peaceful and serene moment, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to be here.
Final Preparations and Anticipation for Tomorrow
As the day draws to a close, I'm filled with anticipation for tomorrow's adventure. I've double-checked my gear, made sure my camera batteries are fully charged, and reviewed my itinerary. I’m as ready as I can be for whatever Hornstrandir throws my way.
Tomorrow, I plan to take the boat to Hornstrandir and settle into my campsite. I'm particularly excited to visit Kvíar Lodge and hopefully catch a glimpse of the elusive Arctic foxes that inhabit the area. I also hope to see Drangajökull glacier. I'm a bit nervous about the unpredictable weather, but I'm also confident in my abilities and my gear.
Before heading to Hornstrandir tomorrow, I plan to grab breakfast at Café Riis Hólmavík, lunch at Kaffi Norðurfjörður, and perhaps treat myself to a celebratory dinner at Restaurant Galdur - Seafood Restaurant upon my return. I'm also intrigued by Dokkan Brugghús, a local bar that I might check out if time allows.
I know that the next few days will be challenging, but I also know that they will be incredibly rewarding. I'm eager to disconnect from the world, immerse myself in nature, and capture the raw beauty of Hornstrandir through my lens.
I’m especially excited about the wildlife. Hornstrandir is known for its Arctic foxes, and I’m hoping to get some amazing photos of them in their natural habitat. I’ve also heard that there are many different species of seabirds nesting along the cliffs, so I’ll be sure to bring my telephoto lens.
As I drift off to sleep tonight, I can almost hear the call of the wild. The adventure is about to begin, and I can’t wait to share it with you all.
I’m a little worried about the essentials I forgot: insect repellent and a portable water filter. I'll need to be extra cautious about water sources and hope the bugs aren't too fierce!
I'm also mindful of the rules and regulations of the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. It's crucial to respect the flora and fauna, leave no trace behind, and minimize my impact on this fragile environment. I've already reported my travel plans to the Environmental Agency, as required for travel during this sensitive time of year.
I know that there’s limited cellular coverage in the area. I’ve made sure to pack a map and compass, and I’ve also downloaded offline maps on my phone. I’ve also familiarized myself with the location of the emergency shelters, just in case.
Thank you for joining me on the first day of my journey. Stay tuned for more updates from the wild heart of Iceland!
