Solo Expedition to Iceland's Hornstrandir Nature Reserve
Day 13: Farewell, Hornstrandir: A Final Day of Icelandic Delights
Discover Iceland's charm as I bid adieu to Hornstrandir with a soothing swim in Krossneslaug & savoring local flavors in Ísafjörður.
A Fond Farewell to the Wild North
As my incredible solo journey through Iceland's Hornstrandir Nature Reserve draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the raw beauty and profound solitude that this remote corner of the world has offered. Today, the final day of my adventure, was a bittersweet symphony of saying goodbye to the wilderness and embracing the charming culture of the Westfjords.
The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Galdur - Seafood Restaurant in Ísafjörður. The aroma of fresh seafood filled the air, a comforting reminder of the ocean's bounty that has sustained this region for centuries. I savored every bite, knowing that it would be one of my last tastes of authentic Icelandic cuisine on this trip. As I ate, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences I've had and the stunning landscapes I've witnessed. It was a perfect start to a day dedicated to soaking in the last moments of Icelandic magic. I made a mental note to tell Liam all about this place; I know he'd love the fresh seafood.
With a satisfied stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards Krossneslaug, a geothermal pool nestled in the remote region of Strandir. The drive itself was an adventure, a winding road that hugged the coastline, revealing breathtaking views of fjords and mountains. The landscape was starkly beautiful, a testament to the power and resilience of nature. The gravel road leading to Krossneslaug required careful navigation, but the promise of a soothing soak in naturally heated waters kept me motivated. It was a long 90 km drive from Hólmavík.
The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.
Reaching Krossneslaug felt like discovering a hidden oasis. The pool, perched on a black-pebble beach, offered an unobstructed view of the roaring waves and the vast expanse of the ocean. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of salt and seaweed. As I slipped into the warm, mineral-rich water, I felt my muscles relax and my mind quiet. It was the perfect way to unwind after days of hiking and camping in the wilderness. The pool is one of the rare swimming pools heated by natural hot springs in the region. Built by the local youth association, it's usually accessible in the summer months.

The setting of Krossneslaug is truly unique. Being in the pool, with the mountains surrounding me, and the ocean stretching out before me, I felt a sense of peace and connection to nature that I rarely experience in my busy life back in Banff. I closed my eyes, listening to the rhythmic crashing of the waves, and let the warmth of the water seep into my bones. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect culmination to my Hornstrandir adventure.
After my rejuvenating soak, I reluctantly left Krossneslaug and began the drive back towards Ísafjörður. Along the way, I stopped at The Fjord Hub, an adventure center in Ísafjörður. While I didn't need to rent a bike, I was intrigued by the array of equipment and the knowledgeable staff. I chatted with one of the employees, learning about the various cycling routes and hiking trails in the area. It was inspiring to see their passion for the outdoors and their commitment to helping visitors explore the Westfjords.
For lunch, I decided to try Cafe Restaurant Dunhagi, enticed by its reputation for fresh, local ingredients. The cafe was cozy and inviting, with a warm atmosphere that made me feel right at home. I ordered a plate of the local fish, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were vibrant and the fish was cooked to perfection. It was a culinary experience that truly captured the essence of Icelandic cuisine. The cafe is known for its homemade breads and desserts made with local herbs and spices from the fjord. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff added to the overall appeal.
As the afternoon wore on, I found myself drawn to the charming streets of Ísafjörður. I strolled along the waterfront, admiring the colorful buildings and the bustling harbor. The town exuded a sense of history and culture, a testament to its rich maritime heritage. I visited a local shop, picking up a few souvenirs for Liam and our friends back home. I wanted to bring them a piece of Iceland, a tangible reminder of the incredible journey I had undertaken.
Before dinner, I found myself at Hópið, a restaurant known for its authentic Icelandic dishes and cozy atmosphere. I decided to indulge in a traditional lamb dish, eager to experience another taste of the local cuisine. The lamb was tender and flavorful, cooked with herbs and spices that evoked the rugged landscape of Iceland. The restaurant was filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the warm hospitality and delicious food. With its cozy interior and friendly service, Hópið has become a favorite among locals and tourists. The restaurant prides itself on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create authentic dishes that reflect the region's unique flavors.
As I savored my meal, I reflected on the past thirteen days, the challenges I had overcome, and the beauty I had witnessed. Hornstrandir had tested my limits, pushing me beyond my comfort zone and forcing me to rely on my own strength and resilience. But it had also rewarded me with moments of unparalleled beauty, solitude, and connection to nature. I had seen arctic foxes roaming free, hiked through vast wildflower meadows, and witnessed the raw power of the ocean crashing against the cliffs.
This trip has been more than just a photography expedition; it has been a journey of self-discovery. I have learned to appreciate the simple things in life, to find joy in solitude, and to embrace the unexpected. I have also gained a deeper understanding of the importance of preserving our planet's wild places, ensuring that future generations can experience the same sense of wonder and awe that I have felt in Hornstrandir.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over Ísafjörður, I made my way back to my accommodation. The town is a charming hub for anyone exploring Iceland's Westfjords.
Tomorrow marks the end of my solo expedition. I will be heading back to Reykjavik and then making my way home to Banff. While I am eager to see Liam and share my stories with him, a part of me will always remain in Hornstrandir, wandering the wild landscapes and breathing in the crisp, clean air.
Thank you for joining me on this incredible journey. I hope that my words and photographs have inspired you to explore the world, to embrace the unknown, and to seek out your own adventures. Until next time, farewell from Iceland. I am already planning my next adventure, perhaps somewhere closer to home, exploring the Canadian Rockies with Liam by my side.
I will forever cherish the memories I have made in this magical place.
